"Wha-How do ya do it? Ya gotta-*hic*- feel it!" The drunken doctor exclaimed, as if it were the most straightforward thing he could have possibly said. "Don't read the chakra, let the chakra tell you! You're the boss, and the diagnosis answers to you! You ain't gonna be takin no crap from your own chakra, are ya?!?"

As crazy as Lothar's ramblings were, the gist of what he said to the girl was correct. When the chakra reentered her hand, it would pinpoint the problem area on the patient on it's own. This was not so much an exercise of reading the chakra, as it was listening to the chakra. Of course, it was up to the girl to decipher that from the insane doctor's rambling.

A Month Later...

Gage's eyes snapped open and darted back and forth scanning his surroundings. 'Where the hell am I?' He wondered as he began to feel a little dizzy. 'How long have I been here?' His mind flooded itself with questions. It took all his mental strength to focus on one thing. 'Getting up!'

Slowly, Gage began to run through the joints of his body. beginning with his jaw and working his way to his toes. The process took longer then he had anticipated which revived the thought of 'how long have I been here', nevertheless, he removed his hands from underneath the thin blanket that covered him. To his surprise his body was wrapped in bandages. The thoughts that he had tried so hard to shut out began to slowly creep their way back into his head as he slowly sat up. As soon as his feet hit the floor, an Anbu followed by a nurse entered the room. "Oh man..." Gage muttered to himself as they approached him, as if they were waiting for him to get up.

"The Mizukage wishes to see you as soon as your discharged." The Anbu mumbled from behind his mask, then walked out of the room. Gage just nodded to himself as his memories began to come back to him. As the Anbu exited the nurse simply checked Gage's vitals without saying a word. She hummed to herself quietly as she went through the procedure. The nurse was very... through... as Gage put it in his mind. It seemed like hours passed by before she finally finished. 'Finally...'

Satisfied with her work she walked over to the small desk and sat down on the chair and began speaking. "You've been here for a month under a sedation jutsu. The Mizukage as graciously provided you with a change of clothes in the closet." She lifted her finger in the direction of one of the corners then let her hand fall gently to her side. "That is all your are discharged." She told him as she stood and exited the room.

"I hope I'm not in too much trouble..." He mumbled to himself as he forced himself to stand. The weight of his body made him fumble forward. His legs weren't used to being under the weight of his body liked they used to. "Awe man..." He mumbled again as he stumbled forward to the closet. He gripped the handle and twisted the nob. He gave it gentle tug and looked inside to be greeted by a new set of clothes identical to the ones he had before.

Gage muttered his thanks to the Mizukage as he slowly got dressed and began walking back and forth in an effort to regain the feeling in his feet. As he walked, he twirled a kunia. When he was finally satisfied with the feeling in his legs he walked to the window and opened it.

The air that greeted him filled his body once more with the exuberance he felt when he was younger. Gage smiled to himself as he stepped out onto the window ledge and jumped. Deciding to take to the roofs to skip out on the busy streets. 'Mizukage, here I come...'

------------------------------

It was dark by the time Masaki finally reached the hospital, and limped through the door. Noone even bothered to ask him what happned, or what his trouble was, his bruises probably showed most of the problem, and his face the rest. Two nin wuickly grabbed him and slipped him onto a wheelchair, perhaps those bed things were all in use or the chair was closer or they decided since he was walking he wasnt that bad. The nurses removed his clothes and checked him out before covering his lower half again. All the damage was in his upper body after all, and the hospital was cold. They looked at the bruised arms, did something and bandaged them tightly before leaving the room. The doctor wasnt quite so efficient, he didnt show up for what seemed hours, and when he did his tests were long and painful. He had Masaki move this, and stretch that, then finally used some medical jutsu before he even knew what the problem was.

"Alright, you are heavily bruised but only your right arm has any real damage. A small bone fracture. We bandaged it up too, but it shouldnt be any problem. It will give you some pain of course, if it gets too bad come back in their could be a fragment causing trouble but we dont think it will." He paused and rubbed his head. He was old, and from what Masaki saw his command of medical jutsu was weak. Perhaps his age was interfering or he simply hadnt learned to use medical jutsu. "Now, we saw you had coughed up blood usually that means some internal damage. The simple explanation is you had some internal bleeding, I patched the problem area we'll have to put you under anesthetic for the rest, but it wont be anything too invasive. If you seem healthy enough you should be out of here by tomorrow morning."

It was at this point Masaki began to wonder if he really needed to end his training. Nothing seemed that bad after all. Of course the doctors would tell him he did the right thing simply because he was injured, they didnt quite understand how things worked. Masaki did what he was told for the most part, and was very surprised noone asked how he got hurt in the first place before he realized why. A shinobi usually gained injury doing things noone needed to know about. Many shinobi wouldn't even wish to discuss their training to keep their talents hidden. The staff here probably knew all too well not to ask for any stories the most they would ask for would be about the damage itself. Where a poison likely came from, if they were hit by X or Y element etc.

The rest of Masaki's stay was uneventful, and not particularly restful. He kept getting woken by the night staff for checkups, and it took him until the afternoon before he felt anywhere near properly rested. When they finally let him out shortly after lunch he moved eagerly. Most of the pain was gone, although he did have difficulty breathing properly and his arm hurt nearly as bad as it did last night. It seemed the village took care of most of shinobi medical bills, and Masaki was able to pay the rest in installments. They said if the mission was particularly dangerous he could get Luo to cover the rest, but Masaki doubted Luo would do it. He wouldnt want to ask anyways, his injuries werent that bad, the final bill was manageable, and he wasnt even on a mission when he got hurt. Perhaps though, he should meet Luo about getting a mission?

Arriving at the front double doors of the hospital, the jounin opened one of them and entered the large building, approaching the front desk. "Found him collapsed at the gates. By the looks of the cracked lips he's dehydrated, and his breathing has been irregular as well as subdued for the last thirty minutes. He's been on a slow decline into unconsciousness, other than that there's not much to tell. Give him a bed and a room and bring him to a stable condition." Filling out some forms, the man turned him over to the nurses who had just brought a gurney to set him on. As they wheeled him, he followed until they reached the room, turning around and placing his foot on the wall next to the door as he crossed his arms and bent his head down. He wanted to be alerted the moment the man woke up, and just as well was a bit curious as to his case.

The nurses took his belongings and bagged them, however they left the pendant untouched from his body as they changed him to hospital clothes and began to run triage on him. "Well, its up to him if he lives or dies now. Our doctors and med-nin are good, but the will to survive in the end is always what determines one's fate. Either way he didn't look all that bad, mainly exhausted. So am I. Better take this opportunity to catch up on some rest." With that, the man seemed to fall into a light standing sleep. Strong enough to recoup some energy, but light enough to be awoken should the door next to him be opened. It was now a waiting game.

Taiki was rushed to a room and given the treatment that was needed to stabilize him. While checking his body for anything that was wrong the doctors stumbled upon some fresh wounds, mainly gashes and burn marks that where attributed to be charka burns because there was no sign of burn marks on the actual clothing. What had happened to the genin was clear at that point; he had been attacked, but by who? Who exactly was this Shinobi, and why wasn't he in the village like a normal genin should be? It was an odd case indeed.

After two hours or so his breathing got more controlled, he became more stable, it was clear that he could wake up at any given moment. " BROTHER!" He yelled in a panic just as he opened his eyes, the heart rate monitor going off the charts just as he did. His voice carried throughout the entire room. He quickly sat down in the bed and looked around him seeing just white walls, nothing else in the room, the nurses and doctors had cleared the room if for only just a moment, but the Shinobi knew not where he was, and that made him even more agitated. He struggled to move his arms but the salines, which where injected on to his body to administer a steady flow of water into his system, made it painful to move. At that moment he knew he was at a hospital, but at a hospital where? "Where am I and where is my brother?!" He yelled again, hoping to catch someone's attention. "Where is everyone!" He stated, but this time he was not in a panic, he was sobbing, but why?

When the man's condition began to stabilize, the nurses exited the room to allow him to rest, prompting the Jounin to get up from his light slumber. "Well?" he said as the doctor seemed to leave to make his rounds, waiting for the med-nin to give him a report. Handing Daisuke the prognosis chart he nodded. "I see. Well, I guess I'll take it from here, at least until Luo gets wind of this." Walking into the room, the man propped himself up in the corner to his right as he entered, in front of a clothing cabinet and behind some of the medical equipment. The room was dim since it was night time, it seemed they didn't want to alarm him with fluorescent light and just as well allow him to rest. As such, the man was somewhat hidden in a shadow. Setting his foot on the wall as he had before he waited for the man to wake up, crossing his arms patiently. Sure enough, after about fifteen minutes of waiting the man woke up in a panic. The heart monitor began to beep faster as he searched the room trying to figure out where he was. Sure enough, he began trying to get out of bed, struggling against the IV placed in his arm. Then came more panic.

"Nē, ochitsuki." the man said softly as he unfolded his arms and seemed to come out of the shadows to pass the man on his bed's left, turning the lights on as he did so. Rounding the bed itself he stood at the foot of it staring at the patient, repeating himself to get the man's attention. "Hey, calm down. My name's Daisuke Hideo. You were on your way into the village before collapsing on the road, which is when I brought you here. We would check the shinobi registration files for your picture, but given the hour the Mizukage's Tower is closed. Truth be told I've never seen you before and neither have the nurses. Personally I think doing that would be pointless, but protocol is protocol." His voice sounded a bit dull and annoyed as he paused to speak of protocol. Then, he continued. "Normally I'd just be hear to make sure you don't make the nursing staff's lives hard, or rather take their lives, but because of what they found you and I have to have a little chat."

Lifting his left hand to read what was written on the chart he began to list some things. "Name: Unkown. Patient exhibits signs of exhaustion as well as dehydration. Furthermore, exhaustion seems to be derived from physical combat, not purely physical. Five gashes ranging in size received between four to sixteen stitches each. Patient received saline solution for hydration, as well as chakra treated aloe gel to heal chakra burns of the first degree. Twenty-four hours of bed-rest as well as high protein diet recommended." Tossing the chart onto the bed so he could see for himself, Daisuke continued. "So, that and your....interesting words upon waking up are the reason I'm actually talking to you. If you don't mind, lets start with your name. And if that goes well, continue with where you are from, and where you just came from." Although a bit annoyed with his evening and the fact that he was supposed to be off an hour ago, Daisuke's eyes depicted some semblance of sincerity, at least as much as a man who's eyes were the only part of his face that could be seen.

Hearing the voice at first, he had become startled and created a crystal inside of his hand, concealed from the shinobi's view thanks to the covers in the bed, but the man's initial words gave him some peace of mind and he dropped the crystal to the side of the bed. "Whatever doctor would have come in here got lucky that you were here to explain everything as quickly as you did." The genin spoke still agitated, which was clear in his voice by how fast he was talking. He took a deep breath, still struggling a little to catch his breath, the chakra burns on his stomach burned him now, something he couldn't feel a few minutes prior due to the shock and the fact that he was past out.

Tai tried his best to put himself comfortably on the bed and as he did the crystal spike that was on his hand, that was now on the floor, shattered due to Tai's weakness. " My name is Taiki Matsumaya, I'm a Kirigakure Genin." He began by introducing himself. It didn't surprise the him though that the Jounin hadn't heard of him. This being because he hardly spent any time in the village to being with. He spent most of his time with his family in one of the small villages that were scattered around the Land of Waves. " Any specifics you need to know? I will only answer what you ask; nothing more, nothing less." He explained to the Jounin, his arms resting at his side, showing clear discomfort in his face due to the situation, and more importantly, worry in his eyes.

As the man spoke, Daisuke seemed unphased. In fact, his eyes seemed to rest a bit more as he said, "You'd be lucky if you could throw a kunai in your condition, let alone accurately." He seemed agitated, but it didn't bother Daisuke any in the least. Most people that woke up in unfamiliar territory were agitated. As he said his name as well as his rank and village, Daisuke was mildly surprised to find out he was one of their own. He couldn't exactly say he knew every genin in the village given the size of the village's shinobi force, but still this made the whole situation make less sense. It wasn't until this Taiki began to dictate the terms of questioning that Daisuke let his annoyance with the night get the best of him.

"Who exactly are you to dictate the terms of what has now become an official shinobi investigation? You've got no bargaining chips, technically broke Kiri law by exiting the village without an escort as a genin, and my patience is running thin. It's getting late and unlike you, I have a wife at home who's probably going to give me more hell than any shinobi possibly could. So before I start resorting to my own course of action as far as this investigation goes, I suggest reporting to your acting superior with respect, honesty, and efficiency. First things first, since you conveniently didn't answer it before, where were you just coming from? Furthermore, what is the meaning of your injuries and just as well the nature of the altercation? Finally, who was involved?"

Taiki didn't speak for a few moments, getting his thoughts straight, he wasn't about to get the man mad, more so than what he already was that is. " For starters, I didn't break the law." He began explaining to the Jounin, looking out the window now, his hair falling on his forehead. " I have special permission to leave the village because I don't live within it. My family comes from a smaller village that is about an hour away from the here. I leave on Fridays and return on Sundays, which is why I was returning." Tai explained to the Jounin the first part of his question, answering how he had left the village, why, and where was he coming from, saving himself the future trouble of having to explain that. " And for the record I'm a pretty able bodied Genin, I just haven't had the proper training outside from what my family could provide in our home."

With that said Tai shifted his eyes to face to the Jounin, not pleased with having to explain any of that; it was his own little secret that no one, save for those that needed to know, knew. " About an hour before I left, or so, the village was attacked by a group of bandits that wanted to plunder the resources in the small town; mainly silver and iron. There were few ninja there that could actually defend the town due to the events that have taken place around the Shinobi world, as you most likely know, most of the Kirigakure forces have stayed in the village and in the borders of the country, not much protection for other areas in the land. I sustained my injuries fighting off a group of the bandits. Before we were completely overrun I was tasked to bring the information here to the village. Part of the town was burned, many innocents, among them my brother, were slaughtered. I have never seen anything like that to be honest." His voice stopped abruptly, trying to suppress the thought of his brother if only for just a moment, before his eyes began to water. " I don't know how long I've been out-" He stopped once more, tears beginning to fall out of his eyes. " But I'm afraid it may already be too late."

With a sigh, Daisuke interrupted the boy after he started. "Well for starters you did. Just because you have permission to leave it does not mean you have the permission to leave without an escort, no matter where you live outside of the village proper. The Mizukage does not allow any genin to leave without a chuunin escort to and from." He didn't bother correcting the blonde on the last bit, deciding it didn't really matter that he was more calling attention to his physical state of weakness currently rather than his strength as a shinobi. There weren't most men who could come out of the beginnings of a coma and throw a kunai with accuracy, much less a genin.

As he began to tell his story, things began to make more sense. The moment he mentioned the silver and iron deposits in his village, Daisuke realized he was from one of the twelve smaller islands that surrounded Kirigakure. In fact, definitely one of the two located due South of the island. Both islands were by far in size considered tiny. They weren't a classified shinobi village, therefore actual shinobi in the village were few and far between. He could only equate their situation to something akin to The Village Hidden Within the Waterfall. Since the area was mostly mining and farms, Kiri never really posted that many shinobi on those islands, finding that attacks on them had been too few and far between to justify paying them to stay there and essentially do nothing for days on end. It was then that it began to make sense. Taiki more than likely had an escort to and from the gates to the docks, taking a ferry to his island on his own regularly. However, those were more than likely scheduled one or twice a week. Again, it didn't make sense to assign a chuunin a short mission like that and pay him to basically walk a grown man to and from the gates to a boat everyday. Over the course of a fiscal year, it would be a huge oversight. Since his visiting was infrequent and wasn't something that could exactly be scheduled, Daisuke figured the Mizukage cut out the escort entirely to save money. He bent the rules, but for a very obvious reason.

When the story wrapped up, Daisuke nodded. "I see. I apologize for my assumptions earlier, I didn't realize your circumstances. Just as well, I'm sorry for your loss. However, given the fact that you haven't been in the village for more than three hours, and I'm guessing your trek hear took about that much time as well, I'd have to venture a guess and say based on the amount of damage your village sustained roughly six hours ago, it's more than likely pointless for us to dispatch any first response shinobi to the island. I'll take the information I have and file a report, and see what can be done about the situation. My guess is The Mizukage's gonna want to wait it out a week or so, let the bandits get comfortable before striking. If they killed that many people within the first few hours, they're more than likely going to keep the rest alive. Seems odd, but I'm sure they don't want to mine the minerals themselves. Besides, who better to do it than the men and women who do it for a living, and know the caves?"

For a second, Daisuke didn't realize he was thinking aloud as far as that last sentence was concerned, stopping the train of thought before it went further as he realized how cruel it sounded. However, what he said was very well true. No one worked faster than those who had nothing left to lose but their own lives. And if they were smart, they'd use the leftover villagers to traverse the caves to avoid being caved in themselves. Clearing his throat, Daisuke changed pace a bit. "Your brother, what was his name?"

He just sat there and heard Daisuke speaking, the man had made some sense, some people would have survived, and that was a victory all of its own, if one could consider that a victory that was. In whichever case, Tai had calmed down considerably, but he was still anxious given what had happened. "You have a very good point with that." Tai said to the Jounin, acknowledging what he had said, regardless of how cold or cruel it might have been; so long as the people didn't resist they would live, but he wasn't sure how well that would play out, not in that small town.

" He isn't really my brother, we just grew up together, and are like brothers." He explained briefly, shifting his eyes across the room to get a good view of his environment. "His name is Aris Ayane. He isn't a Shinobi though. His father taught him how to use a sword just in case the town was attacked, I guess it payed off, kind off." He said, his voice showing clear discontent with things. " So what now? Do I stay here? Can I go see what happened in my home?" He asked the Jounin, hoping for some words of wisdom, or at least comfort. " Or you should just go home to your wife. Explain what happened. I wouldn't want to be a burden on you."

Daisuke didn't bother commenting on the man's long-time friend. After all, the wound was still fresh and he could hear discontent behind his words. As he asked the jounin about what was going to happen, even going so far as to offer Daisuke the pleasure of leaving, he replied with relative ease in his voice. "Well, either way you're going to be here for twenty-four hours. Although I'm sure after morning evaluations you'll probably be free to go by the afternoon. Right now there's not much for me to do other than go home, right this report, and turn it in at the jounin round-up in the morning. As for you, I suggest trying to get some rest. You're probably due for your dressings to be changed and another chakra aloe treatment anyway." Turning on his heels, Daisuke headed for the door. As he opened it he stopped mid step and said in a sing-songy manner, "Goooood luuuuck."

With that, he walked out of the door, shutting it behind him. Walking down the empty hall, he thought to himself, "Well that was certainly something." Nodding at the nurses as they opened the door he said aloud as he threw a hand up to say goodbye, "Ladies." With that, his visage faded into the mist, the tail of his coat being the last fleeting image of the man for the night. He had a cold dinner and a heated woman to get home to.
