yes, lsdj is thebest for chiptune. i plan on getting one someday. (but chiptune is my side project, so i havnt really put money into it) LSDJ provides 4 channels, where as trackers give you 5+ channels. actualy lsdj cartridges are extremly rare and usually expensive. BUT you can download a rom of it for $2 and play it on a gameboy emulator. also, if you have the know how and/or the equipment you can burn the rom onto a cartridge yourself. (i might do that i have to look into how much the equipment is)
a lot of chiptuner start out with trackers. trackers are pretty simple to use and you can usually get them for free. i personally use famitracker.(once u get the hang out it you can download drums and other samples) also, i've heard of nerdtracker, but i've never tested it.
i've also seen some work with the DJ mode on the gameboy camera, but nothing impressive. good for starters.
