Chapter One

‘It’s been two years now. Two years since Ash left. In that time, he has entered the Kanto, Orange, Johto, and Hoenn Leagues. He is supposed to return two days from now to visit his mother and Professor Oak before going off on his next journey. In two days, I will come of age and receive my first Pokémon. I’ve been hanging around the Oak Research Laboratory for months now; it is like a second home to me now. Squirtle is really shy and Bulbasaur likes to sleep someplace quiet but will greet me with a vine whenever it sees me. Charmander, however, likes to follow me everywhere I go. The sad look on its face everyday when I leave the lab breaks my heart. Two days from now, Ash will return. Two days from now, I get my first Pokémon. Two days from now…which one will I choose?’
I closed my journal and turned out the light. Lying down on my bed, I thought about the coming days and how my life would change. I touched the picture of my parents and closed my eyes, the images of my upcoming journey allowing me to drift off to sleep.

The next day, I arrived at the Lab bright and early to play with the Pokémon. When I arrived, however, Professor Oak was on the phone with Ash. I came in as they were hanging up. “Good morning, Professor.” I said as he hung up the phone. He turned and smiled. Before he could return the greeting, I felt something jump onto my back and climb up onto my head.
The professor smiled and started laughing. I looked up and saw a pair of yellow eyes looking down at me. I smiled as well and heard “Char!” Laughing, I reached up and took the little Pokémon off my head.
“Well, good morning to you too, Charmander.” I said as the little Pokémon hugged me. Returning the hug, I smiled and Professor Oak walked over and placed a hand on Charmander’s head.
“It seems Charmander has really taking a liking to you, Steven.” He said. I nodded and looked down to see the little fire type smiling up at me. “He was waiting for you all night. I think he knows you will be leaving soon.” Upon hearing those words, Charmander hugged me tighter and gave me the same sad look it gave me every night. Right then, I knew immediately which Pokémon I would pick.

The rest of the day when on like normal; Tracy and I helped the Professor with the Pokémon. We played with them, and Tracy and I had a practice battle. It was nearing dark when I decided to head home. I opened the door and turned to tell the Professor I would be back in the morning. As I did though, I saw Charmander standing on the stairs looking at me with the same sad look that it gave me everyday. I walked over and picked up the young Pokémon. Charmander held me tightly and the Professor came down the stairs. I looked up at him, but before I could say anything, he spoke. “Why don’t you take Charmander home for the night, Steven? I’m sure that would make Charmander happy.” He said, smiling. I looked down at Charmander and saw its eyes gleaming. “Is that really ok?” I asked and he nodded.

Half an hour later, Charmander and I were at my house, eating dinner. It was quiet, but enjoyable. Charmander ate his fill and climbed up onto the table. Smiling, I finished my own dinner and pet the young Pokémon.
“Tomorrow, I begin my journey as a Pokémon Trainer.” I started, but Charmander gave me it’s same sad look. “Will you let me finish before you get all sad?” I smiled and so did Charmander. “I was thinking, Charmander. Would you like to come with me on my journey?” I asked.
Charmander smiled and I saw the same gleam in its eyes from before. “Charmander, Char! Char!” it said and jumped into my arms and hugged me as tightly as it could.
“Then it’s settled.” I said and returned the hug.

The next morning, I woke up later than I had intended to, but within an hour, Charmander and I were on our way to Oak’s Lab. By the time we got there, it was nearly noon. We walked in and I could hear several voices coming from the main part of the lab. I walked up the stairs and saw who all was there. I recognized Tracy, Prof. Oak, Ash, Mrs. Ketchum, and Brock, but there were also two people I didn’t recognize. Professor Oak was the first to notice me.
“Ah, Steven, we were wondering when you were going to show up.” He said as I walked up to them.
“Really? Why?” I asked.
“Well, today is the day you get your first Pokémon. Of course, you know Mrs. Ketchum, Ash and Brock, but let me introduce you to Professor Elm and Lance. Professor Elm is the top researcher of Pokémon Evolution, and the top scientist in the Johto region. And Lance is a Member of the Elite Four and of the Pokémon G-Men.” The Professor said, motioning to them.
“Hello. It’s nice to meet you.” I said bowing. I looked at Lance. “Aren’t you the legendary Dragon Trainer, Lance?” I asked.
“That’s right. The one and only.” He said.
“Wow, that’s awesome!” I said excitedly.
“Do you have an interest in Dragon types?” Lance asked me, seeing my excitement.
“I like all types. I don’t favor one type over another, but instead, favor them all equally.” I explained to him.
“Spoken like a true trainer and Pokemon lover.” He said with a smile on his face.
Professor Oak spoke up. “So, have you decided which Pokemon you want to take with you on your journey?” he asked.
“That’s right. Professor Oak told us you get to choose your very first Pokemon today. Do you know what Pokemon you want?” Ash asked me. Pikachu jumped off of Ash’s lap and ran over to me and jumped into my arms. We all laughed and I pet Pikachu’s sweet spot.
I looked at everyone’s face individually and spoke. “I’ve decided to go with-“(I started, but was interrupted by a large explosion. We all got up and ran outside to see a giant metal Charizard with a giant red “R” on its chest. In its hands, we saw Ash’s Beyleaf.
“Hey!” Ash exclaimed as a net shot out of its other hand and grabbed Pikachu from his shoulder.
“Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!” came muffled voices from inside the machine. The Charizard’s head opened to reveal a guy, a girl, and a Meowth.
“Team Rocket!” Everyone exclaimed.
“Give me back my Pikachu!” Ash yelled.
“Sorry Twerp. No can do! We’ll be going now. Tata!” Team rocket exclaimed and disappeared back into their Robot.
Ash growled and pulled out a Pokeball. “Go, Swellow! Use Arial Ace to stop Team Rocket!” Ash said. Swellow appeared in a flash of light and rammed into their Charizard. There wasn’t a scratch on it.
Team Rocket laughed. “You should know by now that those same old tricks won’t work on us!”
Ash growled again. Then, I got an idea. “Ash, tell Swellow to follow my commands. I’ll need Corphish, too!” I said. Ash looked at me for a second and nodded. Then, I turned to Tracy. “I’ll need Scyther, too.” I told him. The two of them handed me their Pokeballs and I called out the two Pokemon. I launched the two Pokeballs into the air. “Scyther, carry Charmander on your back up to the machine! Swellow, take Corphish and do the same!” I explained to them.
Corphish appeared on Swellow’s back and Charmander jumped onto Scyther’s. The two of them flew up to the giant machine, and it tried to stop them with a Flamethrower. The two of them dodged it. “Charmander, use Ember now!” Charmander shot the embers at the machine, focusing on a single spot. Once it was nice and hot, I told it to stop. “Now, Corphish, Bubblebeam!” I commanded. Corphish shot the water type attack at the same spot where Charmander heated it up and rapidly cooled it. “Now, Swellow, Arial Ace and Scyther, use Slash. Go!” The two Pokemon flew fast and hit their mark with their attacks. The cracked metal shattered and a hole appeared in the machine.
“Uh oh…” Team Rocket said, the Charizard dropping Pikachu and Beyleaf. Beyleaf landed beside Ash and Ash caught Pikachu.
“Now, let’s send them flying! Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!” Ash said.
Pikachu jumped into the air. “Pii-kaa-CHUUUU!!!” the mouse Pokemon cried, sending a bolt of electricity at Team Rocket’s machine. They were shocked for a few seconds before it blew up and they were sent flying.
“Look’s like we’re blasting off again!!!” they said before disappearing into the sky.
A few minutes later, after checking to make sure Beyleaf and Pikachu were alright, and after returning the Pokemon to their Pokeballs, we all sat in the lab once again. Ash looked at me. “You did well out there, controlling the Pokemon, even though they weren’t yours.” He said. “You showed Team Rocket that they have someone else too watch out for from now on.” I couldn’t help but smile and feel proud.
“Yeah, you did great! You sure have the makings for becoming a powerful trainer.” Brock complimented.
“I agree. You handled yourself very well. You used each Pokemon’s strength to your advantage. Someday, I hope to see you in the Pokemon League.” Lance said, smiling.
Professor Oak chose that moment to walk up to us. “You know, you remind me a lot of my Ash and my grandson, Gary.” He said. I remembered meeting Gary a few times when he visited the Lab. “But, back to business. Which Pokemon will you take with you?” he asked. Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur all walked up.
I sat there for a moment, looking at the three Pokemon. I walked up to Bulbasaur first and bent down to bet the Grass type. “Bulba.” It said. This Bulbasaur was female, so it had a higher voice than Ash’s. I got up and walked over to Squirtle. It shied away from me a bit. “Squirtle.” It said. I pet it lightly on the head before moving on to Charmander. The lizard Pokemon smiled up at me and I returned the smile brightly.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Bulbasaur look away sadly. Feeling pity for the young Pokemon, I stood up and turned to the Professor. “Do you think it is possible I could take two with me?” I asked him. “I mean, the double battle rules have been added to the Kanto League rules. So, I was thinking it would be a good way for me to start out.” I explained.
Professor Oak thought for a minute. “Hmm…” he said. Lance walked up and placed his hand on the Professor’s shoulder and nodded. The Professor nodded back and turned to me. “Very well, you can start out with two Pokemon.” He said.
“Thanks Professor!” I exclaimed. I turned back to the Pokemon before me. “So, Charmander, Bulbasaur, how about it?” I asked them. “Do you both want to come with me on my-I mean…Our journey?” Charmander walked over to Bulbasaur and smiled. “Charmander Char!” it said. Whatever Charmander said, it made Bulbasaur smile. “Bulba. Bulbasaur.” The two Pokemon walked up to me and I bent down to pet them.
“Well, it’s settled then.” Professor Oak said. “Here is your Pokedex, along with your Pokeballs.” He said and handed me the items.
“Thanks Professor.” I said Ash and everyone congratulating me.
After a couple more hours, Lance left, and we were all invited to dinner at Ash’s house. His mom left before us so she could start preparing. Brock was giving me tips on how to take care of my Pokemon and Ash was giving me battling tips.
After dinner, I walked outside to stare up at the night sky. Charmander followed me while Bulbasaur slept in a corner. I leaned on the fence and starred at the stars for a while before Ash came out and joined me.
“You nervous?” he asked me and I shook my head. “That’s good. By the way, since we will be going in the same direction in the morning, how about you travel with Brock and me?” he asked and I looked at him, surprised.
“Would that be alright?” I asked.
“Of course! After all, it will be more fun with more people.” He said, smiling. I smiled and turned back to the night sky, imagining the days ahead.

I hope you enjoyed reading it, but a fre notes:

1.) Some of the formatting was off once it was posted, so forgive me for that.
2.) I kow there will be some Grammer and other Language mistakes, so please do not bring them up.

Now please, tell me what you think and what I can do to make future chapters better.

Please do not post things such as "this sucks, you can't write, oh god not another one" if you do, I will have your post removed.

Constructive criticism is accepted though.

This is...definitely an interesting story. I'm not really one for incorporating OCs and Canon characters together in a Fanfic, but it's still fairly nicely done. You've demonstrated competence in writing, to be sure, though there's always room for improvement, even for the pros.

I will say that your grammar is better than what I've seen from many people who write Fanfics and you at know how to spell. Although Bayleaf was misspelled, I won't hold that against you. smile

I'm not really a writer, myself, so I hardly know how I'd be able to give you constructive criticism here, though I look forward to seeing the next chapter.

Normally, I wouldn't use OCs and Canons, but in later chapters, things will become a bit more clear.

and thank you for pointing out the Bayleaf mistake. I will fix that if Bayleaf ever comes up again(not sure if she will or not). I will have Chapter 2 up this weekend or early next week so others can get a chance to read Chapter one first and comment on it.

Also, on a further note, some things will, follow canon, but others will not, so no one get angry if something happens that you don't like.

Chapter Two

After Ash and I spoke, I went home and started packing. I was just taking the basics. I went to bed around ten, seeing as I was to meet Ash and Brock at Ash’s house around nine the next morning. I woke up a little after eight and ate breakfast with Charmander and Bulbasaur.
We were out of the house by eight forty-five. Before we left, I made sure to pack the picture of my parents. After one final check, we made our way to Ash’s house and arrived right on time. While there, we got a call from Professor Oak telling us there was someone at the lab looking for him. We all headed to lab, wondering who it was. We arrived and went inside. Sitting on the couch was the Professor and May!
“Ash! Brock! Hey guys!” she said, standing up. She was holding Squirtle in her arms.
“May!” Ash and Brock said together. I recognized May from the Grand Festival. “What are you doing here, May?” Ash asked her.
She explained that she was going to enter the Grand Festival in Kanto and was hoping to catch up with Ash and Brock before they left for the Battle Frontier. Just then, she seemed to notice me. “Oh, hello,” She said. “I forgot to introduce myself. My name’s May. I traveled with Ash and Brock in the Hoenn Region.
“My name is Steven. I’m a new trainer. I’m going to be traveling with Ash and Brock throughout Kanto to enter the Pokemon League.” I explained.
“Really? That’s great!” she said. “So, what Pokemon did you get?” she asked. I smiled and released Charmander and Bulbasaur. She kneeled down and said hi to them. “Oh, they are so cute! But my Squirtle is much cuter!” she said.
“Your Squirtle?!” Ash, Brock, and I said in unison. May nodded.
“When May arrived, Squirtle attached to her like a magnet.” Professor Oak explained.
“I guess Squirtle like women over men.” I said and everyone laughed. Squirtle shot a water gun at my face for a few seconds and we all laughed harder.
We were just planning on when to leave but Ash asked May a question. “Why the way, where’s Max?” he asked her.
“He decided to stay with Professor Birch and do some studying.” she said. She must have seen the confused look on my face because she smiled and said “Max is my little brother. He also traveled with us through Hoenn.” I nodded, understanding.

Half an hour later, Ash stood up. “Well, if we want to Reach Viridian City by nightfall, we better get going soon.” He said. We all agreed and said good by to Professor Oak and Tracy before heading back to Ash’s house.
We arrived and Brock and Ash ran inside to get their stuff. While May and I waited for them, I turned to May. “So, May, what Pokemon did you bring with you from Hoenn?” I asked.
May smiled. “I brought Combusken, Skitty, and Munchlax. And now, I have my dear little Squirtle.” She said and hugged the water type. I smiled, remembering their performances in the Grand Festival.
“I bet you will do great in the Grand Festival here in Kanto.” I said and Ash and Brock came back out. “Ready?” I asked and they nodded. “Then let’s go!” I said and we all cheered.
We headed off to the north, towards Viridian City. Along the way, we talked about Ash, May, and Bock’s Adventure in Hoenn. What kind of Pokemon they saw and the trainers they met. We decided to stop for lunch and Ash and I had a practice battle. Since it wouldn’t be fair with my Pokemon against his, he let me pick one of his Pokemon to use. I decided on Grovyle and he chose Swellow.

After a fierce battle, which ended in a tie, Lunch was served and we sat down to eat. After lunch, we hit the road again. We arrived at Viridian City before nightfall and got a room at the Pokemon Center. We let the Pokemon out to have some fun while we had dinner. “So, what are our plans then?” I asked so we could get everything set straight.
“Well the closest Gym is in Pewter City and the Battle Factory is just south of Cerulean City.” Brock said.
“And don’t forget the Contest in Cerulean City!” May said. We had heard from Nurse Joy about the contest not long before. I had also registered for the Pokemon League.
“Pewter City is your hometown, isn’t it, Brock?” I asked. Brock nodded. We finished Dinner and went outside to check on the Pokemon, when as soon as we stepped out the door, a huge net came down and grabbed up all of our Pokemon, including my recently caught Pidgey! “Hey!” we all exclaimed.
We heard maniacal laugher and we looked up to see a balloon in the shape of a Meowth! In the basket was Team Rocket!
“Team Rocket!” we exclaimed.
“Thanks for the Pokemon Twerps! Now we’ll be seeing you…NOT!” Jessie said and started to fly off. We all ran after then into the Viridian Forest. I stopped in mid pursuit and thought a moment.
“What’s wrong, Steven? We have to catch them!” Ash said.
I looked up, determination in my eyes. “You guys go on ahead! I’ll catch up!” I said and darted into the forest, in a different direction. I searched aimlessly for a few minutes before finding what I was looking for. Sleeping on a tree was a wild Beedrill. Quietly, I took out a Pokeball and threw it at the sleeping Pokemon. The ball caught it and shook a few times before stopping. Smiling, I picked up the Pokeball and ran back to the others.
When I found them, Ash and the others were squaring off against Team Rocket, but all of our Pokemon were still in the cage. I walked out into the clearing. “Steven!” May exclaimed, being the first to see me.
Smiling, I walked in front of the others, facing Team rocket, along with their Dustox and Cacnea. I pulled out the Pokeball and pointed it towards them. “Give back out Pokemon, or else!” I said.
The three of them looked scared for a minute but then started laughing. “One more twerp with an empty Pokeball isn’t gonna scare us!” Meowth said.
Smiling, I said, “Are you sure about the empty Pokeball part?” They stopped laughing.
“Wh-what do you mean? Of course it’s empty!” Jessie said.
“Oh really? Well let’s find out! Let’s go!!!” I said and launched the Pokeball into the air. The ball opened and Beedrill came out.
Team Rocket froze. I smiled. “Beedrill! Let’s go, use Poison sting!” I said.
“Dustox, you use Poison sting as well!” Jessie said. The attacks collided and fell to the ground, harmless.
“Beedrill! Use Twin needle attack!” I said. Beedrill flew at them and used it’ needles to attack all of them.
Ash turned to May and Brock. “When did he get a Beedrill?” he asked.
“He must have caught it when he went off by himself. He must have known something like this would happen so he came prepared.” Brock said.
“Really? Wow, and he didn’t even have another Pokemon to battle it either. He’s good…” May said.
“No kidding….” Ash said as they continued to watch.
“Now, Beedrill! Free the Pokemon with Fury Attack!” I commanded and Beedrill flew at he cage and broke the bars with it’s needles.
“uh oh…” Team Rocket said, seeing the Pokemon get free.
“Pikachu! Send them off with Thunderbolt!” Ash said and Pikachu hit them with the electric attack.
“Looks like Team Rocket is blasting off again!!!!” they cried out.

A little later, after we all returned to the Pokemon Center we went to bed. I was the last to fall asleep. I kept thinking about Beedrill and how it had helped us out. Deciding what I was going to do, I turned over and fell asleep.

The next morning, while the others were having breakfast, I walked off towards the forest where I found Beedrill. I nodded and took out the Pokeball. “Beedrill, come on out!” I said. Beedrill appeared in blue light this time. I put the Pokeball away. “You’re free now, Beedrill. Head on back to your friends.” I told it. It looked at me confused.
From behind me, I heard rustling. I turned to see Ash, may, and Brock standing in the bushes. “Uh…guys?” I said. “What are you doing here?”
“We were going to ask you the same thing, but I guess we kind of over heard what you said to Beedrill…” Ash said. The three of them walked up beside me.
“Why are you letting it go anyways? Beedrill helped us, remember?” May said.
“That’s just it. The reason I caught Beedrill is because I wanted to free our Pokemon, and now that that has been done, I’m letting Beedrill go, so it can continue to live on with it’s friends.” I said, looking up at Beedrill. “Thank you, Beedrill….We will always remember what you did.” I said. “Now go on. Go be with your friends.”
Beedrill looked at me and nodded it’s head. Beedrill, looking sad, turned and flew off. We all turned to leave Breedrill be, but a few seconds later, we heard Beedrill flying back. I turned around to see it fly up to me. “Beedrill..bee bee!” it said, holding out it’s needles. I looked down to see it holding something.
“For me?” I asked and Beedrill nodded. I held out my hand and Beedrill dropped the item into it. It was hard and cold. I looked at it, with everyone else looking too. I turned it over to see a leaf on it.
“That’s a Leaf Stone!” Brock said. “It can be used to make different types of Pokemon evolve.”
I looked at Beedrill again. “Beedrill….thank you.” I said, holding the stone tightly in my hand. Beedrill nodded happily and flew off. I raised my other hand to wave. “Bye Beedrill! Thank you for everything!” I said. It stopped and waved back before flying back through the trees and out of sight.

The four of us returned to the Pokemon Center and gathered our stuff before heading off through the Viridian Forest, towards my first gym challenge and untold adventures.
