Yami slowly opened her eyes. The world was dark around, except for a dull light next to her. But it was a different kind of dark - not a dark that you would see with all the lights off, but a black that was shimmery, mixed with deep purples, reds, and blues. And it all seemed to move hypnotically, sort of like she was staring down into the ocean's waves. She stared at the swirling darkness, and her lids felt suddenly very heavy. Yami felt like the darkness was drawing her in, and that she could get lost in it and sleep happily forever. She felt neither warmth nor cold, just a compelling urge to close her eyes forever. And slowly, she was off, sleeping in the darkness.

Yami came slowly out of her dreamless sleep. Something had not abruptly awaken her, yet it was one of those annoying things that won't let you sleep. As she came slowly to a state of consciousness, she realized this annoyance was a light shining in her eyes. She moved a hand to shield her face as she squinted his eyes open. The source of the light was a small lantern floating by her head. She quickly grabbed it and held it close to her body. Yami realized that this had been the source of the light she had seen before. But why hadn't she even realized she was holding it? She looked around, now more fully aware. Where was she? Why hadn't she even wondered that before? All she wanted to do before was sleep, but now she felt apprehensive. She spun around in a circle, looking at every angle of this weird voided place. There was nothing except herself.. and.. very far away, a light circle in the void. A way out maybe? Yami started walking towards the light, carrying her lantern. But wait, she wasn't walking. She was... floating? She looked down at his legs, but found instead, just a whisp where his body ended. She knew it wasn't right, but he couldn't remember what was suppose to be there. Maybe she had just dreamed those other two things. So she continued on, floating through the darkness.

Yami didn't know how long she had be walking; She had lost all sense of time here - she wondered if it even moved forward in this void of a place. She continued to float towards the gaping mouth of the void. Her lantern swung slowly at his side, its light becoming dull compared to that of the circular light. As Yami neared the door, she realized that it wasn't just a bright light, but something distorted. She could see faint colors and shapes, but it was as if she were looking though a foggy bit of water. The door rippled more violently than the surrounding world behind her, and with every move she made, it seemed to shake even more with excitement. SHe wasn't sure how, but Yami knew this was were she was suppose to be. She was meant to travel to this place through the dark, and she was meant to go through the other side.

The whispling pulled her lantern close to her body and plunged through the gateway.

Yami entered into the world of the deceased through the well of souls. She had traversed the depths of the well, almost failing to find her way through; The light of her lantern was her guiding light through its darkness. Now that she was on the other side, there was so much more to explore and discover than she could possibly imagined. The whispling found herself exploring places, mostly Twili Forest. She felt safe there - there weren't many of the living there, and it did not hold an ominous darkness like some of the other places of the world. Yami found that she had trouble speaking, so she spent most of her time watching her surroundings in silence.

As Yami watched and learned from her surroundings, she could feel her body becoming stronger. She felt as if her body were becoming more and more visible each day, and the whispling also noticed that her lantern steadily became brighter with each passing day. She knew something was going to happen, but she wasn't sure what.

It was a gloomy, overcast day when Yami was out exploring the small forest of Vyolshire. She wasn't sure if it was just the dark day, but the whispling believed that her lantern was glowing even brighter than normal this day. She glided slowly between the well spaced trees of the forest, peering upwards towards the sky. She wasn't looking where she was going, and the female ran right into the trunk of a large tree. Her head spun for a moment - she wasn't use to running into things. It seemed that lately, every day she became more and more solid; Where before she would of slid right through the tree, now she had to make an effort to make herself lucid to pass through objects.

What she hadn't noticed is when she hit the tree, she dropped her lantern and a fresh fracture marked its side. Yami retrieved her lantern and gently traced the line of the crack with her hand. It felt warm, and tiny bits of light seemed to be escaping from the fissure. As she touched it, the fracture began to grow. The whispling abruptly stopped, but it was too late now, a huge crack formed a completed circle on the lantern and began branching out into smaller fractures. Yami gaped and cupped the lantern in her hands. What had she done?! With a crack the lantern broke open and a bright light came bursting forth. The light engulfed Yami and she had to close her eyes. She began to feel very warm and as if her body was vibrating. She squinted her eyes even tighter, as the light grew even brighter. And as suddenly as the light emerged, it was gone.

Yami slowly opened her eyes. Her lantern lay in pieces on the ground. What had the done. She raised a hand to her face, when she noticed it wasn't her same whispling hand. It had fingers and was a real hand - not just a whisp of her body. She turned her eyes downward to see that her body ended in a great snake tail with shining green scales. Her black and green hair brushed against her cheek, tickling her. It all became clear to her now - she hadn't really broken her lantern, she had progressed in the life of death that she didn't need it anymore. And its magic changed her into a more solid form. Yami rubbed her cheek and smiled happily.
