Dogsbane made a protesting noise, about to argue that he truly wasn't scared, but his dad's words caught his attention. "i won't tell Marli." he said. He settled down and continued to silflay as his ears swiveled, to listen to his Da. He could almost see his dad as an Owsla. He always had.

"'Neways, y'see, I was a 'ard'eaded fellah. I wanted t' be th' best an' was workin' t' prove m'self." He sighed as he dredged up past, unpleasant events. It wasn't exactly something he wanted to remember, but tales might possibly help serve as a warning for the younger generation and he did not want anything of the sort to happen to his little ones.
"I was out 'n about 'n all the sudden, I smelled flayrah! S'good stuff. Very good. Y'don't find it that much an' I was eager. I went t' eat it 'n SNAP!" He thumped a foot lightly as he raised his voice, emphasizing the suddenness of his capture.

He flicked his ears as he stared, mesmerized. He wanted to work and prove himself too! He would work hard, when he was bigger. He wiggled his tiny cotton tail.
At the emphasis of snap, he bolted back into the burrow, shocked and startled by the sudden movement. He slowly crept back out. "sorry..." he muttered. "what happened next?"

"E'reything went dark."
The usually cheerful rabbit wore an anxious expression as he spoke and crouched closer to his son. His ears flattened back and his mismatched eyes searched above them as he mimicked fear, and simultaneously kept a look out for danger.
"I were in some sort 'o cold burrow wi'out any openin's and I were moved int' a hurdudu. It was loud 'n embleer. I was 'alf tharn the entire time, I was. I cou'n't see 'alf of what was goin' on and the men took me someplace."

He lowered his ears, looking up at his da and trembling, almost tharn just listening. He could almost smell the horrid hrududu and feel the box around him. He couldn't imagine the horror his da must have gone through, but it pricked his innards.

"Oy, were bad y'know. E'rything went black fer' me. Tharn, ah was. When Ah came too, I were at the same place I was captured, y'know. In lots of pain an' I 'ad this thing wedge in mah ear." He pawed with his back foot at the bright tag that dangled from his ear.
"I was righ' confused, y'know, and tried t' go back 'ome."

"So, you don't remember how you got it?" he asked in a tiny voice. "Just...woke up with it?" he nuzzled a bit closer to the ground, a bit relieved that the 'worst' part was over. Little did he know, the worst part was only beginning.
"Didn't anyone know how to get it out, Da?"

"Naw." He lied completely, leaving his ordeal with the two-legged, hairless freaks unsaid. The tale was worrisome enough for a youngster, as it was.
"Ain't fig-yad it out, yet. Won't come loose an' I don' 'zactly fancy losin' me ear anymore than I aw'ready 'ave, y'see. Sev'ral bucks tried t'get it out, but wan't no use. I wen' 'ome 'sepcitn' to be welcomed. Instead, they tore at me."

He pulled in his fur and rushed over as those words left his mouth. He lapped at old scars, as if trying to heal them. "Poor Da! No-one hurt you here! Nope!" he said, ears down. "poor Da..." he pouted.

"S'why Bracken-rah is such a grea' leader, y'know?" He cracked a smile and chuckled lightly as he fed his kitten a more watered down version of his tale. He didn't want the little snip of a thing having nightmares, not at all. He'd certainly have a heavy heart, then.
But as he recalled what happened, he almost wanted to go tharn himself. How he made it through the wounds he had received, through the forests that he wandered as a hlessi, and to this particular warren without getting snapped up by the many elil he saw was beyond him.
"Took me good 'mount o' time wan'drin t' get 'ere. Y'ne'er wanna be a 'lessi, son. Ne'er. No safe burrow t'sleep in, no other rabbits t' watch yer back. Elil er'y where. Take it from me, y'wanna safe place like this 'ere, warren."

He nodded and nuzzled his Da. "Great story, Da." he said, smiling, nodding. "I promise, i'll always be here in this warren." he said, tail wiggling. He suddenly shivered. "But...can i go back to marli now? its....its cold."

"Y'had 'nough t' et, then?" He flicked his ears upright and listened hard to their surroundings. He was glad they were so close to the warren's entrance and he wouldn't dream of taking his young son much further out. He heard no sounds of danger, but that wasn't to say it couldn't be lurking in the distance.
He plopped down on all fours and brushed some frosty bits away from what grass was hidden beneath. It wasn't exactly lush or green, but it would do for now. He snapped a bite and swallowed.
