Well the problem is that Wicca has become so mainstream, that the word itself has lost its meaning to most practitioners. Wicca is still respected, by most, as a legitimate sect. However, in general the youth misunderstand Wicca and tend to treat it just like Satanism or any other occult thing that they don't understand or care to study. They use it as a title, to draw attention, to make themselves feel special, yet they know nothing about what it is that they are claiming. It's become a fad for the general populous, and that's why it remains a joke in the eyes of many pagans.
