Porfirio paused to consider his options. A stallion should protect what was his. A stallion should also know his territory well and be ready to enlarge it, shouldn't he? That clinched it. "Yes, I suppose I shall come with you," he said with what dignity he could put together quickly. This was most definitely an opportunity not to be missed, a chance to explore his territory with Alia. Unfortunately Duncan would come along, of course, but there was no real way that he could object to the presence of Duncan.

Alia tossed her mane as she turned to head off in the direction of this special feeding place. Duncan continued to play with her swishing tail hair but eventually got bored and leaped off of her hindquarters and into the trees. He traveled alongside the pair by running, jumping and gliding from tree top to tree top.
The mare thought about the colt who followed her. She liked him, regardless of his attitude. She saw her own attitude reflected in him. Though he was growing child, she wasn't feeling a maternal instinct so much because of his own independence. Alia was sure that Porfirio would make a strong stallion when he grew if he managed to continue to take care of himself. She was sure that his dominating personality would suit him well if he could learn, every once in a while, to curtail his pride.
After several minutes on a faint trail the trees parted to reveal a clearing. The sun hit the lush plants directly in this place, causing them to grow large and leafy. One of the plants had sweet smelling, and tasting, golden flowers. Alia had never taken a friend here before and also had never bothered to learn the names of these delicious plants but she was happy to share them now.
"I'm sure other kirin know of this place but I have never seen anyone here. It's a little bit of a walk, but I find it's worth it. Enjoy."

Porfirio was fascinated, as he'd occasionally heard the mares talking about the rare delicious plants in this clearing, though they'd spoken it with the regret of only having found them as fillies. "I've heard about these grasses," he said with genuine awe. "The mares said they only saw and tasted these as fillies. Can I really...?" he asked, for once being polite and reverent. The golden blooms--sun lilies, or something like that--were supposed to be an especially valued delicacy, and the sight of them alone excited him.

Alia straightened, upon seeing how impressed Porfirio was, and seemed almost delighted that she had done something that someone else enjoyed so much.
"Enjoy.. I know there are plenty but it's always wise never to over eat. You want to make sure that there will be plenty growing later. When you are a grown stallion and you bring your children here, there will be plenty for them in the future. I suppose those mares are just too busy chasing men to enjoy the finer things in life.." Alia's last sentences held a hint of mockery for the other mares but it unknowingly revealed just how few friends she really had.
Duncan had dropped down among the high leafy plants. He was a bit of a trickster and he weaved amongst the flowers until he popped up right in Porfirio's face with a loud screech! He then chittered, as if laughing, and snatched a golden bloom right from under the colt's nose and ran back to Alia with it.
"I'm sorry.." She chuckled, "I am quite fond of his hijinks most of the time."
As she spoke, her familiar weaved the golden flower into her mane, right behind her ear, and upon finishing he nuzzled her head affectionately.

Porfirio glared at Duncan, but seeing what Duncan was doing to Alia's lovely mane, he just had to one-up the rikkchik. Plucking a small bouquet of the golden blossoms, he took them to start clumsily but authoritatively weaving them into Alia's tail, since he couldn't yet reach her mane. When he finished, he stepped back and said, "Actually, those mares that talk about these flowers are so busy raising foals that they can't really look for these flowers."
He started munching on some of the blooms, savoring the warm, sweet flavor of the flowers with a blissful expression. "What makes you so sure you won't come with me and our foals to this place when we have foals?" Porfirio was unaware that Alia might not think of Porfirio this way, or might have someone else, or otherwise might not have foals with him. It simply did not occur to him, so determined was he that at least some of his foals were going to be with Alia.

Well Alia didn't have anyone else and not even a single prospect. She didn't even necessarily think of Porfirio as off the market.. but she didn't think of him as on the market either! In fact his statements caught her slightly off guard but whatever the kirin equivalent of blushing was.. well, she was doing it.
She could only try and disguise her surprise with a laugh.
"I'm flattered.." She turned her head to look at her tail, also trying to hide any embarrassed look she may have. "But I'm sure you'll find some other females by the time you've grown. All you stallions go off galavanting around with all the prettier ladies.. with longer manes or brighter colors.."
Alia turned and looked at Porfirio out of the corner of her eye while he ate. She was partially sizing him up and partially trying to imagine what sort of a strong stallion he would become. Without stating a decision she simply turned back to him and kindly nuzzled the colt on the head.
"But if that situation were to arise.. I would surely accompany the family here." There was no definite commitment.. but she hadn't turned him down either.
"We'll see." She gave him a coy expression.
The sun was beginning to set and the sounds of activity in the forest were starting to die down. The sounds of animals were being replaced with the nighttime prelude of insects. They both would probably need to head to their nests soon and Alia found herself with a sudden interest in Porfirio staying safe.

Porfirio was quiet. This mare understood, right? Oh, well, time for being blunt. "I intend to take you here when we have kids every day," he said firmly. "Even if there are other mares around, I'm taking you, definitely. I miiight take other mares, but you'll always come with me." That much was certain in his mind. He hadn't quite worked out if he was going to be coming with other mares or how the other mares of a good herd stallion would function in his world view. That could be worked out later.
He watched the rays of the setting sun set the clearing ablaze with the dying fiery hues of autumn. Bedtime soon, but he instantly decided to stay here. With Alia. With his mare. No way was he going to abandon his prize to any predators or other stallions, and Alia was definitely a prize to protect with his life.
