Veyes' fingers held onto Con's as if he wouldn't let go of that one connection point between the two of them. So very long he had wanted to be this close without all the walls between them so brutally erected over time. Among his peers....Alone was the only word he could think of. People he had thought as friends either had gone away or found life partners like Con. But that was the two paths in life for a Candidate. And well, he didn't know if he should expect any more than that these days. His eyes watched Con's hand that he held just listening.

He could only agree with Con's assessment of Z'nal and their punishment with a slow nod. It had been overly cruel and heartless of the man. After time gone by with other people doing far worse like Kyllae, the incident at the lake seemed so trivia. Eventually he pulled himself upright not really wanting to let go of that hand but he was also throughly soaked from tears and water. As he listened to the outpouring of emotions and the remembrance of a story Veyes had kept so long to himself finding the telling even harder to continue nowadays; he strongly felt that same feeling of futility about the Weyr and didn't know how to make Con feel any better let alone himself so he did what his mother might have done. Just reached out and hug Con into himself.

Holding him close was like a dream in itself - just Con nothing more than that. No anger, no hate, no Weyr or people...just the two of them. His fingers held the other's shoulders, while his tear ducts were raw from the constant outpour the feeling of crying still held him and he choked out words in between, "Yeah...it stupid. This whole mess...the Weyr, Z'nal...us. We should have never let this eat us up so much. I should have said something...anything." he still felt so sad about that and it just threatened to make his eyes bleed from all the pain that seemed to pour out.

Sniffling for a moment, he then nodded as he held him still, "Yeah, that was the story and you were laughing a little as much as you would let yourself. For that moment, I think we were all happy." He paused in the reverie of that moment and tried to collect himself even though that was very hard to do. The idea of the story pulled at his imagination, which was ever willing to oblige the boy even on the worst of days. It was something that stuck with him as a stalwart companion.

"I'll finish it if you still want to hear it at some point. But, your dragon...he might be a little confused." This was his small moment of trying to find a brighter spot of humor amidst their awful puddle of unmanly emotional outpour. The outpouring and feeling of Con so close had ripped out the cancer that had been eating at his soul leaving a sore area in his heart that might start healing over the course of time. "Con, I wish I never lost you as a friend. Losing you is something I will always regret." he said so quietly while gently holding his former friend. "I wish..." He didn't finish the sentence. It was enough to have this moment...maybe one they might never have again. He wouldn't ask for more.

He had, C'mor realized, really needed a hug. Anyone watching them might have laughed, rolled their eyes, made insinuations about their sexuality but... Well frankly he didn't give a flitt's tailfork. For a while everything was just about alright, just like it had been after the hatching until Z'nal had stormed over. Why had the man handled it like that? Why hadn't he even cared about who'd done what? Why had he decided to be so very sadistic about the whole sharding thing? If he ever happened to come into a position of influence, one of the first things he'd do was strip Z'nal of his rank. People might call him petty, say he was just bearing a grudge and if he was honest with himself that was part of it. Only part though. The rest was a very real desire not to see anyone else punished so disproportionally for their crime. Theft was unacceptable, but so was allowing candidates to beat their fellows and go unpunished.

"I think he'd understand," C'mor said eventually, not yet breaking away from the embrace, "he might not have done so well when he was younger but he'd get it now, right Naedreth?" As he turned his attention to their mental link, he suddenly became aware of a scraping noise. A glance through his dragon's eyes told him what was happening; Naedreth had picked up the shovel in one massive forepaw and was carefully scooping sand off the bed and into the bucket.

"You two are tired and sad," the bronze explained with a soft rumble and a swirl of brighter blue in his eyes, "but there is still work to be done. I can reach to do this, so I will. I'm afraid I can't help with the rider's area though, you two will need to do that for yourselves."

"Ha, now that's something I didn't think I'd ever see," C'mor croaked before pausing to clear his throat, "a drudge dragon. I won't tell if you won't... Veyes... Look." C'mor sighed and pulled back at last, taking a deep shaky breath and wiping his eyes again as he tried to get himself back under control. "I think that... I mean... I'd like to..." He wasn't sure where he was going with this, didn't know what he was trying to say. He was not the best at expressing himself even when he knew what it was he was getting at... well he thought he did know actually, he just needed to...

The bronze rider pushed himself to his feet and moved swiftly to the entrance of the weyr before ducking out of sight behind Naedreth. Pausing only to stroke the massive dragon's hide, and let him know just how much he adored him, he stepped back into view and cleared his throat again. "Hi," he set off towards Veyes once more, "I'm C'mor, but you can call me Con if you like. That's my lifemate Naedreth, and the little lady on my shoulder is Gilden. I heard you could use some help up here... I hope that maybe we can become friends one day. I'd like for us to be friends." A fresh start? Well not quite, this act wasn't going to make a blank slate or anything but it was a chance for him to start setting the past aside in his mind. Maybe it would take him a while, but a lot of good things in life took a while to achieve. A chance at regaining a lost friendship was worth striving for.

Veyes sobs and choked breath finally calmed as he sat there holding one he dearly cared about. If anyone had been around to laugh at them - two guys crying out their hard felt emotions, Veyes would have just ignored them. It wasn't a sexual feeling although he still found Con quite attractive physically; it wasn't a need for him. He just wanted his friend back - the companions they should have been rather than the mess things had become some from his mistake...some from the monster named Z'nal.

"You think so?" He couldn't hear the conversation between rider and dragon so all he could really do was try to wipe his eyes as Con pointed out something that indeed caught the boy's attention. For a few seconds, it took Veyes a moment to realize what Naedreth was doing and when he did 'drudge dragon' finally became clear bringing an unexpected smile as his imagination collided into the forefront of his brain while a mischievous vision of story came to his mind. It wasn't something he'd say aloud but instead said, "But his hands...they're bigger than the shovel... No, I won't tell. " And he wouldn't...but the vivid story that played in his brain would occupy his days for some time to come.

But shortly after, Con was pulling away and Veyes was almost reluctant to let that feeling go. The last words made him nervous and he didn't know what to expect especially when Con moved so swiftly towards his dragon. "Don't go..." he called out as he stood up almost uncertain if he should chase after him. Even so, he wasn't going to run towards a bronze dragon who was 'shoveling'; he didn't know the bronze well enough. Maybe Con needed to get away from this emotional event. Veyes certainly could understand that after releasing all that anxiety. So instead he stood still and clenched his fingers against the unexpected.

However, that notion soon changed when Con reappeared just around the other side of his dragon. It confused Veyes for a moment until the other teen spoke. Veyes almost coughed as he fumbled between a laugh and a cry. That feeling of renewed hope warming his heart. He couldn't just leave the words unanswered even if his soul wanted to bask in the feeling just a moment longer. So he took a deep breath and smiled at the other, "I'm Veyes, a candidate here at Ista....but I used to be a farmer." He paused for a moment realizing in all these tears he had almost forgetten that Mine was on the floor some where. But the tiny flit was easily spotted chewing on the end of a sponge with tufts of the sponge everywhere on the floor. Reaching down, he picked up his little blue with sponge still gripped by tiny hands and teeth. "Nice to meet you, Con..." Some how he just couldn't get to the name C'mor yet. It hadn't sunk in after all this time. Maybe one day it would but to Veyes...Con was always Con.

"Umm...this is my little guy, Mine. He's only a couple days old but he's got a lot of character. You've got a nice looking little family there, Con." Mine cheeped and spit out another bit of sponge as its tiny eyes blinked and looked at Con and Gliden.

Veyes glanced around and took in a view of the dirty weyr once more. Things were still in poor shape and it would be a long way to go to get it done, "I guess I do need some help. Some riders really don't know how to clean up after themselves. You'd think after being candidates they'd have that down pat." he laughed a little and looked up at Con for a moment when he talked about friendship.

Maybe this wouldn't be the same friendship that they had in the past...No. It would be better. This time, he'd be smarter and he and Con would learn to talk before running different directions like they had in the past. Surely they had grown wiser than days past. They were growing up...right? On the brink of adulthood. It was almost time to leave childhood behind but maybe on the way, they'd walk together hand in hand as friends rather than chasms apart. Then, his lips parted and finally he said with a gentle voice, "I hope we can be friends too...I'd like that very much." He held his hand out to Con and hoped he'd take it.

C'mor's lips parted in a grin, and he clasped the other young man's hand firmly. "You'd think so, wouldn't you? Good to meet you Veyes, and you too Mine."

Gilden, though thoroughly confused by current events, had the presence of mind to cheep a greeting of her own to the human and his young firelizard; what a pretty little thing he was! He really shouldn't eat sponge though, didn't taste good! She'd fine something nicer for him if he wanted it, she'd hunt a tunnel snake! Yummy! They always tasted so nice when you caught them to share.

Naedreth added a deep rumble to the conversation and paused in his cleaning efforts. "Tell him... tell him that I hope you are good friends." He really did, he never wanted to see His upset like that again. He would remind him every day from now on to take breaks, he would not allow him to work through meals, he would remind him of his own good sense and if he had to sit on him some days to make him stop working, then he would.

"Right. I'll do that." C'mor nodded to Naedreth before turning back to Veyes. "Naedreth hopes so too... for now though I suppose we'd better get on with cleaning this place up... Oh!" A nudge from the bronze who had set about sweeping sand once more reminded him of what else he'd brought up to the weyr. "I brought supper. Just meat rolls and water, but I'm hungry enough that it sounds good... Want to join me? I did bring enough for two people."

Veyes smiled back much more certain when Con took his hand. The grasp was warm and real. Finally, he felt free of that weight that had sunk him so low. It was like turning a new leaf all in a day. Although he didn't wish to let go of this handshake there was no need to worry so much. It was a new start and things were different.

Mine meeped and Veyes looked down at his palm. "Oh geesh.. Mine, sponge isn't food." He slowly released Con's hand because he had to save the sponge from the flit. "I think he's hungry again." Mine chirped and sent small visions of hungry to Veyes and then turned his head to the Gold and cheeped back a greeting trying to waddle upright in Veyes' hands so he could see the gold more with his tiny face.

"Umm...tell yours I know we will try very hard." He wasn't quite sure what to say with Naedreth as much as he did with Raith. Raith was just so dang easy to talk to and Naedreth he hardly knew. "Yeah, this place is a rat's hole right now. I'm thinking I'm going to use this Weyr's bath after we're done. Heck, no one lives here and we're already covered with sand and soot." Veyes had been smart to bring a towel with him and soap sands. It was a small benefit for cleaning an empty weyr and he wasn't going to miss out.

"Oh really? Yes, please. I'd love to!" That was the only part he had forgotten for himself...Dinner. Just like Con too...remembering what he hadn't.

Right. C'mor rubbed his face wearily, but once he had roused himself a little he looked at Veyes with a genuine - if tired - smile. "He knows. Using the bath sounds like a good idea to me, you're still stuck with the candidate baths, aren't you?" Not a lot of fun. The weyrling baths had been better, and now he had a pool all of his own... well not quite, but after sharing with so very many for so long, a bathing pool between two seemed like luxury to him.

"Right, food," C'mor's stomach growled as he spoke; lunch had been a very long time ago and it was none too pleased with him. Luckily that was soon solved; he hastened over to where he had left his bag and retrieved from it a cloth wrapped package and a large water skin. "Here," he moved back over to Veyes and sat down before spreading out the cloth to reveal two meat rolls, two red fruit, and two bread rolls. "Best eat fast," he said with a sigh as he took one of the rolls, "it's going to be a long night." And that was that he supposed. It would take a while for him to come to trust Veyes again, but at least the poison between them was gone now and they could begin to mend their relationship. Another thing to put on his to do list. Still, the thing was so long these days he'd hardly notice another item.

Something his mother always said sprung to mind then; 'If you want something to get done, give the job to a busy person'. That seemed about right. He was rushed off his feet, but everything that was feasibly attainable was getting done slowly. Given his promise to Naedreth it might all take a bit longer now, but he was patient. The rest of the would would just have to follow his example. Feeling more tired than he had his whole life, but happier than he had for months, C'mor offered Veyes a small smile and bit into his roll.

Veyes chuckled, "Yeah...still the candidate baths. That isn't going to change except on the days I have time to go up to L'thor's weyr. Then I get a real bath. Still, the candidate baths are better than the tub that I used at home just a bit more crowded."

His tummy probably could have done a concerto with Con's when presented with the topic of dinner. Z'nal had pulled him for this task just after candidate lesson and sent him up here. He hadn't even thought to get supper only thought to get out of the Candidate Master's sight. That might have been his own mistake but well thankfully Con didn't have the same issues anymore. At least he was lucky in that regard.

He picked the meat roll first with his mouth watering. It could have been burnt and he would have still eaten it but luckily it wasn't like that tonight. In fact, this one tasted like it was a normal meat roll - a rarity in itself around this Weyr. "Mm...yeah...I wonder who lived here. If I weren't just a candidate, I think I'd have put them to work cleaning this place." He chuckled some as he thought about it drifting just a hair along his imagination thinking of two riders with buckets and sponges - hanging their heads.

"Well, with your dragon shoveling up there, it might get done sooner." he smiled again and took another bite. After a moment he grinned a little more and looked over Con shoulder towards the working dragon then whispers with a teasing voice, "Although, if he cupped his hands rather than used the shovel I bet it would be twenty times faster."

A soft clunk came from across the room as Naedreth put down the shovel pointedly. "You may tell that one," he said with a grumble, "that I am not deaf. I have never cleaned before, I thought the tool was important." Apparently not though, and he quickly discovered that a cupped paw did work a lot better than the silly little thing he had been trying to use.

C'mor meanwhile was busy half choking on his mouthful of bread. Once he could breathe again, he grinned at Veyes. "He says he's not deaf," he passed on, "and that he thought the shovel was important. Looks like you were right though, much faster without it." Though he verbally teased his dragon, along their mental link he sent soothing thoughts, and a feeling of gratitude. He knew Naedreth was about as proud as they came, and that he was willing to stoop to cleaning - a job no dragon even considered normally - meant a great deal to him.

"I would do anything if you needed me to do it," the bronze responded as he scooped another massive load of sand into the trough. "Just make sure that you do not get yourself into such a state again! I do not enjoy cleaning, it's boring."

"I know it is. Sorry. I didn't know I was doing it."

"Sometimes Mine," Naedreth replied with a soft rumble, "you really do have the brain of a hatchling. Nevermind, it is good that we make these mistakes now and learn from them. If we make our mistakes before we gain rank, we will make fewer when we have it."

That was, C'mor had to allow, a very good point.
