I love the difference engine! I've often wondered what computers would look like if they had progressed along that same vein.

#1 - Uhh.... Well. Definately not what I was expecting.
The subs and computers were most interesting, though!

This is fantastic. AH, the ingenuity of antiquity! Another interesting one is the invention of an acid and base powered battery lamp used by the ancient Minoans, 1800 years before our common era! pretty exciting.

Ah, love stuff like this. If you look at shows like "What the ancients did for us" then you will see that there are hundreds, even thousands of things that were invented by pre-christian/industrial people.
Like how the Greeks invented the first robots. Or the romans invented concrete (that is actually better far then ours), that the romans invented the crane for lifting things, and such... it is very interesting.
