I was talking with Indig Pheonix the other day, and we got onto the topic of the best and worst books we'd ever read, particularly of the fantasy genre.

I thoroughly maintain that the best book I've ever read was The Eight by Katherine Neville, with Havemercy by Danielle Bennets and Jaida Jones coming in a close second.

The worst, hands down, is a book called The Elvenbane. This book is the matrix of cliches. Badly done halfbreeds and contemptuous elves inslaving humans, not to mention Gary Stu dragons pretending- badly I might add- to be above all of this conflict. It was so awful I couldn't even bring myself to finish it.

What about you all. Best? Worst? Why?

*edit* I shouldn't type when I'm tired...

How many times have you asked yourself?
Is this the hand of fate now that I’ve been dealt?
You’re so disillusioned this can’t be real
And you can’t stand now the way you feel

Oh jeez, I don't know if i can pick.

Can I pick a series for best book?

I am a huge harry potter fan, for good reason. So i'm going to choose all of the series, and if i have to pick 1.. well i'm not going to.. but i can narrow it down to the third and seventh book.

Aside from HP, The Dark Tower series from Stephen king is extraordinary. He should do fantasy more often. biggrin

I have a thing for series in case you couldn't tell.

another fave I have is The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. But its not fantasy, its more sci fi. Its amazing though, probably in my top 5 favorite books of all time.

Worst book? Urm... I don't think i have any books that i've read that I didn't love. There was a book i got from the library called Tithe, it was an installment in some type of fairy series. I didn't like it very much though, it was kinda silly, and it felt like the writer was just trying to cram in as many mythical creatures she possibly could.

I don’t care about what they say
I won’t live or die that way
Tired of figuring out things on my own
Angel’s wings won’t you carry me home?

Funny, i was just thinking about picking up Tithe and checking it out myself. sweatdrop My English class is just wrapping up out literary analysis of the Kite Runner and I firmly maintain that it's among the best books I've ever read. Just beautiful.

Oh, gosh! Picking the best book? I love the Legend of Drizzt and Redwall... Ooh! And don't forget Dragonlance...

The worst book I've read that I can remember...

Twilight is tied with Eldest (even though I loved the rest of Chris's books)

I hate mushy-love stories and can't really wrap my head around how much girls love this book. I read it to see what it's like, I liked how the author wrote it, but the story-line seems wack to me. And the main character, later in the series, getting pregnant? Come on, people! This is a children's book!!!

Eldest, though, had too much politics for me. I want action!

biggrin thanks for reading!

Best book I ever read? "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher, no contest. I've never read a book that makes you think about how you treat others as much as this does.

Worst: "Farewell To Arms" by Hemingway. I know it's supposed to be one of the best books ever written, but I was bored to death. I hated it.
