Seriously though...How do you react when someone lies to you? Now I'm not talking about secrets either. There's a fundamental difference between a secret and a lie. That's a subject for another day. For now, I just want to know...is it justified for someone to lie? Do you think it's the right thing to do in the presence of your peers? Why do you think people hide their true selves from society after working so hard to identify what they themselves truly are? People should understand that there are those out there that share the same opinions, ideals, beliefs, etc as themselves...Even then, why? Why do people go through great lengths to lie when situations prove them unnecessary? Why do people make fools of themselves when there's a way to avoid branding themselves as fools by telling the truth?

I pretty much never lie, and when I do, I feel guilty as hell. Even just withholding information makes me nervous...

I don't like being lied to, because if I find out, it takes a lot for me to ever be able to trust the person again.

So I really don't know why people would lie... >.<

To be honest, it depends how important that lie is to me. For example, if I knew exactly that someone was lying to me, but never admitted it then I'd obviously be a bit angry. But if it was over nothing, then I'm still not sure. It's down to the principle that they still lied to you even though you know it's not true.

I've known A LOT of people who've made lies in school times. Some girls would lie they were pregnant for attention, and I still can't believe my friend did it too ¬_¬. Some would say they self harm for attention and others would just LIE. In fact, a girl even lied she got abused as a child for attention.

I personally don't think it's right to lie to your peers, but how would you know that your peers aren't lying to you. I guess for some, knowing the truth may be embarrasing for others to know, so they have no other option than to lie to others. For example, say someone had parents who would argue every single time, and this makes them emotionally unstable and they end up crying at school. Someone goes up to ask this person what's wrong, they would obviously have to come up with something without others knowing. So they would have to lie to their peers. Or say someone else had money problems and had to go on a school trip and they can't make it because of their financial situation, and all their friends are going. Would they tell their friends they can't go because of money problems, or would they just tell them that they can't go because of so and so. Some may want to make their life seem more exciting than usual, so they may end up lying.

People may lie to others because they lack confidence, find their life boring or find their life embarrasing. I've never lied to my peers about my life because I felt no need to - and I don't tell them everything because it's none of their business >: ). But I can guess I can understand why some do, and I wouldn't blame them.

The truth is overrated.
I lie...... Even when there's no purpose to it. Usually because I'm playing around with you and/or just don't think you're worth enough to hear the truth.

Plus, a web of lies is the most entertaining thing I can do with other people. I weave one lie, which leads to the next, and to the next. If I can make a completely stable lie(Which I can do quite well, actually. I've actually turned the original lie into a truth before.)

Lying for something serious? Depends on the situation. It can be a very useful tool. It can delay the consequence for long enough for you to lessen it(Even though it usually becomes larger. Though I've managed to take all the impact away before(Proof is I'm currently on the computer) because of this delay.) It can also lessen the blow if you're avoiding telling them something horrible.

When it helps retain someone else's paranoia then lie to me.

It depends. Like parents not telling their kids that santa isn't real. It's a lie to let the story go one but bad consequences don't come from it. Now lying about something vital like the death of a loved one is ridiculous (yes my parents have done that on more than one occasion and then I find out by asking an inappropriate question like "how is your sister? Oh she died last nov? O.O" Overall I'm not a fan of lying.

it's all about utilitarianism.

you could be disrespecting someone by lying to them, but if the overall positive consequences of the lie greatly overshadow this, then it's okay, i guess.

the problem is that it's all very subjective. :/

I hardly ever lie. But when I do I dont get caught... but I digress. Lying is a pat of life if not unavoidable sometimes you have to lie to stall and so fort. As for friends lying to me I feel hurt and give them hell about it for a while.

There's a fine line between lying being essential to the survival of the human race, and it being the force that condemns us.

It's called tact.

Screw justifying it. I lie most of the time because I'm afraid of what the truth entails, or I'm afraid of what some one could have me see if they knew the truth. The rest of the time is because from hiding the truth so much I've become a compulsive lier. I would lie without reason simply because it's the first thing that came out of my mouth.

I lie because it entertains me.
"Oh, I just stole your wallet from your purse."

Then, later.....
"I swear I didn't steal anything from your purse!"
*Same reaction.*

I meant justifying it in my case. Now I want to go try that.

Hm. To me, it depends on who lied to me, and why they did it.
Because sometimes, I can understand.

People usually do it to protect themselves, or who they really care about. Cause everybody ******** up eventually.... some worse than others.
It doesn't necessarily make it right, but....I think that's why.

Everybody lies. Everybody has to deal with it.
