"Ryan-kun, you like this one?" Standing just to left side, Tsubame appraised the workmanship of the lacquered board and pieces. The set was splendid, and Tsubame flagged down the stall owner and asked for the price. "60,000 yen, that's lower than I thought it would be." Pressing a finger to her lips, she took in the set once more. "Would you take 40,000 instead?" Getting a stiff head shake in the negative from the stall owner, he gave Tsubame a strange look before settling on a price he would accept. "55,000 it is then," Removing her wallet from her kosode, Tsubame counted out five 10,000 bills and a 5,000, handing them off to Ryan.

"Why don't you try paying, you haven't ever payed with yen right?" Tsubame's line of question was softly spoken, so none other than Ryan could hear.

Ryan looked up from the set to the bills in utter and complete shock. "Sixty- Forty- Fifty-five- TEN THOUSAND? FIVE THOUSAND?" He held the bills in astonishment, looking at Tsubame, then the bills, then back at Tsubame. "That's insane! I can't let you spend this kind of money! I mean...even ten dollars was a lot, but ten thousand...this is...this is more money than I've held in my entire life, Tsubame!" While he remembered how Tsubame had said cost was no matter and handed the bills carefully to the merchant, his shocked face was still staring at her. "Going to Europe for two weeks cost me roughly seven hundred dollars, Tsubame...how can a chess set cost fifty-five thousand? All of the land I own probably isn't worth nearly that much!"

Tsubame just couldn't help it and she giggled into the sleeve of her kosode while holding the fabric before her mouth. Cute hadn't been a word she'd associate with Ryan, but his outburst some how hit a cord with her and it made her giddy. Trying her best not to appear amused, she stared back at Ryan with her mottled eyes dancing with delight. "Yen and dollars are much different," hiding her smile carefully, Tsubame continued to talk around her sleeve, "Fifty-five-thousand yen is roughly five-hundred-fifty dollars. If you remove the last two zeros you end up with an estimated dollar amount. But remember, don't worry about price. I've set aside the equivalent of ten-thousand dollars for today, and it won't make a dent in my savings. I've been keeping every scent for thirty years, so don't worry."

Now that Ryan had handed over the bills, she gave a small little bow to the merchant as he pulled out the boards red velvet lined case and packed away the pieces with care. When he was finished, Tsubame took the case by the handle, turning back to Ryan. "So, do you see any other stalls you'd like to go to?" Pointing with a single digit, she picked out a number of clothing stalls and other places of interest.

"I guess we should go look at clothing next," Ryan said, regaining his composure even though his mind was still amazed. Ten thousand? That chess set alone cost more than my flight to and from Europe...but she has ten thousand set away after thirty years? Tsubame must be in one of the richer families...yet she is by no means pretentious. Looking at the stalls then back at Tsubame, Ryan was completely lost. "I have no idea which place would be the best for clothing, so I'll leave that to you since you said you used to make clothing."

"I still make clothing Ryan-kun, I've never stopped. I most definitely enjoy a days work compared to anything else, especially when I know I've woven the fabric, embroidered, painted and sewn a garment myself." Leading the way through the market, Tsubame turned her head every few feet, spying the wares in each stall. After a brisk walk from the first stall, she stopped before a lushly decorated, and extremely large clothing booth. Just from the front Tsubame could easily tell they catered to both eastern and western customers. "How about here? You should be able to find something you'll like." Smiling as always, she led the way, skirting a young man dressed in his best finery, and disappearing into the rows hung clothing.

"You remind me of me," Ryan said softly as he followed Tsubame, looking through the clothing. "I wouldn't know where to start, as I said. This is all robes and luxury...there's no jeans, no working shirts, nothing like that. This is not clothing I really can see myself wearing, Tsubame..."

Indeed, all of the clothing felt wholly alien to him as he looked at it and touched it. This was clothing befitting of nobles and kings, not Ryan the simple, common farmer. There was nothing he recognized, nothing he felt comfortable with. Tsubame should pick...she could probably match something to me better than I ever could here.

"Nothing eh?" Smiling now with an air of mischievousness, Tsubame continued forward, turning a corner at the back of the immense stall. Although the entrance closest to them was stocked with kimono of all kinds, the side she brought them to was full of just what Ryan had been talking about, if not exorbitantly more in price and made of quality materials. Stopping for a moment, Tsubame stared at Ryan's waist for the span of a few seconds before diving into the closest rack slacks. With her hands flying through the assortment of colors and sizes, she pulled out multiple pairs in various shades, one black, another a rich brown and yet another in a deep cream before moving on.

Passing a tiny section devoted entirely to jeans, her hand darted out to snatch a single pair which joined the pile draped over her left arm. Finished for the moment with pants, her next stop was a table with neatly folded dress shirts, and with another quick glance at Ryan she selected a simple white, a soft moss green, and deep blue top before returning to Ryan. "How about these to start with, I thought you'd enjoy some familiar clothing instead of being forced to wear only the unfamiliar."

Ryan looked back, again in shock. "I would never have expected...I thought this was all like what I'm wearing now and nothing that I would have been accustomed to." He felt the clothing with his hand, and despite his surprise looked at the dress shirts with a bit of disdain. "That...that's still fancy, though. The fancy clothes I knew about simply were like my work clothes just kept all tidy and only worn when needed, nothing like these..."

When it came to looking at the jeans, though, Ryan pulled them a bit and then gave a nod. "These, though, are perfect. Jeans are meant to be durable, not nice. You really do have an eye for clothes, Tsubame...the way you seem to work with them surprises even me, because despite how we've met each other I still feel like I'm mostly a complete stranger to you. Thank you so very much, Tsubame...I think that if I had not met you I'd be wandering around here completely lost in a culture almost completely alien to me."

"You would have done just fine on your own Ryan-kun, but I'm happy to have met you as well." Stopping for a moment, still with the load of clothing over one arm, she picked at another pair of jeans, this time in a flattering dark wash as compared to stone washed. Sighing lightly, her eyes flicked up to Ryan and held the slightest reflection of sadness mixed with apprehension. "I-I'm not normally shy I suppose, but I'll admit to being frightened about the prospect of what becoming a Shinigami entailed exactly. I've heard the tales, I knew what to expect...yet, I was still afraid." Settling the pair of jeans she'd been fiddling with over her arm, Tsubame glanced around the stall briefly. "If I hadn't met you Ryan-kun, even the strangers that we are to each other, I would have been just as lost as you say you would have been."

Remaining slightly down trodden, Tsubame inclined her head and continued her cursory look at the other displayed garments. "Hmm, it doesn't seem that they carry anything close to a working shirt...or t-shirt in fact. The dress shirts will have to do for now, until I can send away for some fabrics." Mother always knows the ones I want, and it's so much easier than searching for them else where. Stopping her train of thought, she offered what was in her arms to Ryan once more. "There's a small changing area just to the right there, try a few things on and see if you'd like them. If not, I'll make whatever you'd like myself."

Ryan took the clothes, nodding at what Tsubame had said regarding becoming a shinigami. "It is understandable that you would feel that way, as this is a new experience for you as it is for me, though admittedly I have a lot more to learn it seems."

Without further delay, Ryan went into the changing room, closing the door and taking off the uniform, instead putting on one of the dress shirts and a pair of jeans before walking out. "Feels a lot more comfortable," he said, looking at Tsubame. "What do you think?"

"Hmm, dapper would be a good word." Tsubame began, walking briskly over to where Ryan stood after she'd strayed away to look at a few more clothing options. Circling him with her mottled eyes deeply intrigued, she tugged at the back of the jeans shortly, making sure the fit was correct. "You aren't withdrawn in these as compared to the uniform, you look more natural Ryan-kun." Making another circuit around him, she readjusted her focus from the lower half to his face and torso. "As for the moss color of the shirt, it compliments your skin tone and makes your eyes stand out, all together you look very nice." Finishing her evaluation with a real smile, but then pursed her lips in concentration. Oh, if only they had screened hoodies here, the simple Harujuku style would look so nice...

Looking him over once more Tsubame spotted a discrepancy that made her chuckle. "Would you like to get shoes to Ryan-kun? I don't think tabi and waraji work well unless you accessorize with eastern influenced pieces." Luckily the shop had a selection of well cobbled shoes, from wooden to modern.

At the premise of shoes, Ryan thought back to his years with the radio on. "I never was much for catalogue shopping or going to Woodward's in Regina and getting things there, but...I think in the late sixties or the seventies I heard of some type of running shoe called...'Nike', I think. Strange name, but from what the radio advertising said it sounded popular."

Ryan shook one of his feet, realizing how uncomfortable the shoes he had on were. "Ugh, I'm so used to nice, strong leather boots, not these things. My boots let you dig into the ground nice and hard, but these are just...they seem all too loose for that sort of work. Just something that works, really...that's all that ever matters."
