The minor Jihad discussed here is, as Bilqisnargis said, struggling for the cause of Allah (swt). The major jihad is the struggle within yourself to do good.
The Minor Jihad is struggling against those who oppress you, attack you. The laws for conflict and fighting laid out in the Qur'an are clear regarding several aspects. You may act in self defense against aggressors. As soon as any of them stop in their persecution or attack, you may not continue to attack them. In islam you may not commit suicide (as it goes against the command of not harming your body) and you may not kill/harm civilians.
Terrorism = bad. Also, there *is* a big difference between "islam" and "muslims" sometimes. Islam teaches tolerance towards all people, and mentions in particular the people of the book, Jews and Christians. So no, it is absolutely not right to deny them their practices or be intolerant towards them.
Importantly, Islam teaches moderation in everything. Muslims should not stray from the middle path into either of the two extremes.

You know, those who understand *anything* about the middle east know this:
When a Sufi is writing protest music in any country, bail out of there *now*. From what I've seen, their way of life seems to be centered around a very specific way of seeking Allah that involves as little do to with disagreement in the outside world as possible. I'm not saying that's all Sufis, just the ones I've seen.
That being said, everyone has their violent crazy people. Christanity has the Falwell family and Pat Robertson, Islam has it's overstereotyped "Jihadis", neopaganism has it's Asatru or Celtic white supremacists... but everyone with half a brain steps back from the madness, takes a deep breath, and just goes on as their beliefs show them to. The most important jihad that I've heard about was the internal jihad - conquering yourself for Allah.
Except for how my Turkish roomate a few years ago wouldn't eat pork or drink alcohol, we'd have never noticed that he was Muslim. I was usually out when he prayed towards Mecca, and the couple of times I was there, I kinda felt like I was interrupting the process so I never really saw it.

In Medias Res IV Korn On A Stik I'd like to drop ALL technicality here for a moment. Now in your heart, without any technical boundaries, customary requirements, ect., what do you consider yourself from a religious standpoint. According to YOU, and no one else, what do you say you believe in? I'm sorry if I'm over pursuing the topic, but I feel that sometimes all the technical jumbo just jumbles up understanding and bars away straight up, to the point answers. I'm a Jew. I'm a Jew with all of my heart. I'm a daughter of Zion, of Israel. But it doesn't work that way. Under Jewish law I am forbidden to call myself a Jew. Why under Jewish Law is it forbidden to call oneself a Jew?

Alhamdulillah the clearing up of this topic...Jihad does not refer to terrorists. They warp the words & should be stopped.

Jihad means "Struggle".
Jihadi means "One who Struggles".
I don't know where the myth that Jihadi is an insult. Hell, half the time, it's a fact for most individuals on this planet. That's most people's life: struggle. If someone says you are a Jihadi, it means you struggle.
I especially like how people call others "Jihads". How can someone be a "struggles"?
