I don't mind it if it's done well, but most times it's just dumb. Like when you're watching a serious movie (or in some cases reading a serious book) and all of the sudden they're talking to YOU!
Though I do enjoy when it looks like the character is talking to you (Who Shot Mr. Burns, anyone?) but is really talking to somebody else in the show.
And I don't mind it if the narrator talks directly to you, because that is pretty much their job... right?
But anyway... I usually can't stand it. At all.

I side with her on this one; It seems Narators are the ones who can talk to you. But I was watching George of the jungle the other night, and noticed THEY WERE ARGUING WITH THE NARATOR. Because I havent' seen this anywhere else, it is funny. But if it were to become the new way of breaking that fourth wall, I would have to slap a few people.

First of all George of the Jungle is an old show, the remake they are passing off is just asinine drabble! George has been having discussions with his narrator for decades now, it's classic George. For anyone else interested there is also a video game called the Bards Tale in which the main character and Narrator argue and talk with each other, it's pretty funny.

Now I must agree that breaking the fourth wall is often overused and very annoying, but I just figured out an interesting way to do it.
Humor me, people. I don't play devil's advocate often.
Alright, so if you had and a multi-book author who decided to break the fourth wall, I think it would be cool if he/she had one of his/her characters reading one of his/her books. I think I could live with something like that.

That would be clever, it would have to be stories taking place in the real world though. It would be pretty random if Legolas whipped out a copy of The Hobbit. But Jack Torrance reading a copy of The Last Stand, that would be great! If characters in our books can read Shakespeare and Dickens, why can't they read us too!
