I was thinking more about heading into an independent graphic design business, and in recent times I've been looking into how to lay down the foundation of becoming a successful designer. What do you think are the necessities to creating and advertising your designs? One person(independent Graphic Designer @ http://www.thesteppie.com/) recommended using fonts without any rights needed to use for profit)

I would say to first do some free lance stuff for low cost and then as those people you worked for start telling their friend and you get a client base start worrying about advertisement. Then the first thing is to make business cards and a web page that sells YOU as a product, and yes use fonts that have free rights to them. Sometimes you may find some fonts that ask for you to post a picture or two of how you used the fonts, which is just another way to get your name out there.
