I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and he translated the Book of Mormon. I have read said book and prayed asking if it was true and have received confirmation that it was and that I should join this church.

What was this confirmation?
If you don't mind my asking.

I'm just curious. I mean, it's all fine and dandy that you're professing your religious beliefs and all that, but I feel mentioning you're mormon in any of the threads around here would have been just as effective. Can you offer us anything of substance that we don't already know?

It sounds like you had a pretty profound event happen that changed your life. Let's hear about it.

I know that I am where I need to be. No amount of Anti-Mormon debate (academic or just plain horse dung) will ever deter me from this Church.

While I applaud your conviction, I can't help but wonder if it's wise to be SO convicted. I mean, it's one thing to know that you are in the right place right now and to have absolutely no plans of changing anything about that in the future, but it seems awfully bold to claim that you know that this will never change in your future.
I guess it's semantics really. It's the difference between knowing that right now you don't want to be anything other than mormon in your future and knowing right now that you won't be anything other than mormon in your future.
It just seems a bit presumptuous.

Yes I must agree with Garra on a couple points

Well no first, thank you for being straight forward about it and in turn, perhaps I should do the same?

I once believed in God the father, until I one day decided to look for myself at the claims and have sense decided that Man creates their own gods as they need them.

I hope we can respect each other's views enough to grow

Now the mormon religion has always made me wonder a bit. With the Christian bible (I will refer to Christianity as it is the religion i know best) I believe it was written by man. Ten commandments :man. Gospel:man. the whole thing. Now Mormon always seemed simpler to disprove. If I am not wrong, didn't Joseph Smith never show the plates to anyone? How can we prove that it is in fact divine then?

And on your 'personal' experiences: with Garra, please explain to me how it happened. I would so love to hear it. I have stories I once believed were God in my life and have sense learned the truth.

I am trying my very hardest not to bash your religion, I just want to know.

Actually Joseph Smith revealed the plates to 14 men. All were considered right in mind and were straightforward and honest with their dealings with other men. Also, many other individuals had handled the plates.

My daughter had a severe illness once, a terrible illness that could kill her. By the power of the priesthood, she received strength back into her body and made it through the illness within 3 days. It can be explained away sure, but many who do not believe can always explain away whatever they desire.

Many have been saved through this power of the priesthood, or have not had to endure severe illness. I have also seen the power of prophecy, and many other powers manifest that could only be explained by some divine being who had a hand in such matters.

Ok thank you on the whole bit with the plates. That gives ,what I believed to be foolishness, creditability. Now... what do you mean by the power of priesthood? What did she have? Was she taking medicine? Did you only pray for her? Did you do both?

An give me an instance of this prophetic power you claim to have observed. It is one thing to claim one knows the destination of the soul (something which cannot be scientifically proven) and quite another to claim to ordain something within the realm of the physical.

Priesthood power is something that is bestowed upon a worthy male who is of age. It defines certain key blessings that you can bestow upon others.
She had RSV, and no, she was too young to take any medicine for the illness. No, I laid my hands upon her head and gave her blessing, that the illness would pass from her body.

Joseph Smith prophecied of the Civil War almost about 40 years before the coming of it. People try to nit-pick and say that he stated some things that aren't entirely true, such as it was not a war of the whole earth that was involved. While this is somewhat true, it is also somewhat not true. It did involve certain civilizations outside the US, but I digress, he still prophecied that it was to come from South Carolina, and seperate the southern states from the northern states. I think that is quite a stretch for 40 years before.

There are a few others, and I will provide a link to some of the ones specifically from Joseph Smith. There are other prophets as well of the church who have prophecied, but Joseph Smith tends to be a favorite.

Thank you for your testimony, Fiona. I am so glad for you that you are blessed with the Gospel.

I always feel the Spirit so strongly throughout the three hours on Sunday. We had a beautiful hymn sung today as a special presentation by some of the brothers and sisters of our ward. It was so touching.

I know that only the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has the authority of the Priesthood. I know that the Book of Mormon is true. I know that Heavenly Father lives and loves me. I know that Jesus Christ atoned for my sins so that I could have eternal life. I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet called by God to lead the restoration, and I know that Thomas S. Monson is a true prophet today.

I am grateful to be able to say these things to you the reader. I give my testimony in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. heart

I have read the entire thread, and I think it's very interesting. biggrin

One question, though. Why do Mormons say consuming caffeine is a sin?

Edit: I just realized that I had posted in an old thread that no one posts in anymore. *facepalm*
