أسْمِي نويل I think prayer is the single most important part of faith. For me, its effects are similar to meditation- calming, grounding, relaxing- and then my heart is more open to communicate with and be closer to The Creator.

prayer can be thought of as wishing, but it doesn't have to be. the main thing prayer is, is communication with your god.
yes, it is important to pray. your god is like a parent to you, so pray to him/her/it often. tell him about your day, ask for what you want, lay all your troubles at his feet. and give your thanks, often. never be ashamed to pray, even if it's just for the comfort of being in his presence. it is emotionally healthy, and also the tool by which we shape our lives. we can only make the changes in the world we want to see by a combonation of prayer and action, and the ame is true for maintaining what in our world we want to keep.

Muslims pray five times a day. We have certain times each day for the prayers. September 24, 2009 Fajr:5:18AM Duhr:12:36AM Asr:3:58PM Maghrib:6:36PM Isha:7:55PM
Other days there a hour or a few minutes away. But its never 2 hours or 3 hours away from each time. We know because the emams find out with some method. Its like when its sunrise the exact time and every thing. Whoever wants the paper that tells you the time, at the mosque they hand out the sheets.

I'm also a muslim, and so I also pray 5 times a day. Beyond the five, I take my time and offer extra prayers sometimes. I try to do that more often now than I used to. I never prayed before I became a muslim. The day I started praying, I prayed all the five prayers and I felt so so tranquil after that.
I believe it's really good to have a rhythm in prayer, a repetition. Though it comes with its challenges, such as keeping your focus. I feel that it's important to *keep* thanking God for things such as health, your life, having a roof over your head, food, etc. It doesn't become stale or worn out because God gives you these things anew every single day, and he adds things to that. So as God continuously gives these things, I am continuously thankful. And some things are different in each prayer. For example, the verses you recite, or the things you ask for, and so it has both repetition and variation.
Prayer is fundamental. It's a moment to reflect, to evaluate, take a break from every day things and communicate with God, to go back to the most important thing. It's relaxing and comforting, because you are turning to the one being that knows every little bit about you, even more so than you do yourself. All your thoughts, worries, concerns, feelings, wishes, hopes, everything.
Prayer is focused on remembering God, and being thankful. Aside from that, you can also ask God for things, but that is not the main aspect. You can ask for anything, big or small, and you are encouraged to do so =)

*shrug* I can;t see that it hurts anything. Although if your god of choice starts talking back it might be time to go see a priest.
Or a psychologist.

When I was a believer in God I used to try and pray. It never felt right, I felt like a dumb a** sitting in my room alone praying as hard as I could to God. Not to offend, but that's seriously how I felt. I think that's around the time I started realizing I didn't really believe in God, when I felt ridiculous when I tried to pray.

heart Prayers are such a miraculous thing.
I know God listens to all prayers. I know this because, every time I pray, asking God for guidance, my prayer is answered most often before I even finish asking. For this reason I conclude it is not by our words alone that God listens, but by our hearts.
It is different when I pray for others though. I feel gently connected with something grand, gentle and kind, but I am not interrupted by any sense of realization of abrupt awareness. But because God answers my prayers, I can only believe that he listens to those I pray for others. heart

i pray a patterned prayer when i wake up, get in the car, and sit down to the evening meal.
i try to include some thanks as well as petitions.
i try to listen or practice attentiveness afterward, staying in a receptive mood.
i also pray spontaneously without a schedule or pattern, but it usually averages out to several times a day, often late at night.

In Medias Res IV Lumanny the Space Jew Oh, yeah, prayer is great. Especially Hebrew prayer. I pray several times a week. Lumanny! The Shema! Now I KNOW you didn't just insult my Reform Judaism.
