I think you may have linked the wrong thread, there. This may be what you're talkin' about. This video is the essential nuts and bolts to how bowing works in Japan. The general rule of thumb is the deeper and longer the bow the more formal/apologetic it's meant to be. If the person you're talking to holds the bow, it's good courtesy to bow again, or tell them it's alright and that may don't have to bow
