It was a warm summer night with not a cloud in the sky. Millions of stars and the light of the half moon shone down on Benjamin Baenare as he sat on the cool sandy beach of his private island. Tonight was the night his first group of writers would leave him, not that they knew that. They had all as far as they knew merely been invited down onto the beach for a bonfire chat. a little informal socializing with a chance to perhaps ask him some more questions. It was innocent enough and the red haired man appeared to be utterly at ease.

The red and orange flames of the bonfire crackled merrily and sent little sparks up into the sky. Around the fire pit in the sand were blankets to sit on and a few coolers of various chilled beverages to enjoy. He'd contemplated smore ingredients but decided against it ; having it would have lessened the integrity of the mood he was trying to create.

Ringing the area were tall wooden torches not dissimilar from the sort seen on survivor. They provided guidance down onto the beach, kept bugs away and had a special extra purpose that would be revealed in time.

Everything was set, now Benjamin just had to wait.

Jason stumbled slightly, his night vision never that good to begin with. He was covered in aloe, and had even snuck the bottle into the pocket of his khaki shorts. He wasn't sure how long the bonfire party would take, and once the aloe vera dried he would start hurting again. He hated being burnt.

He dropped down on one of the blankets next to the fire, watching it with wonder for a moment. "I never really dreamed I'd be in a place like this," he admitted to anyone listening. "It's--it's awesome, really. You don't get to go to many bonfire parties where I'm from."

[Aloe vera bottle, pocket knife, his wallet, a couple of candy bars, the clothes on his back, his keys, a pen, a mini notebook to write in, his wristwatch, flipflops, his ipod & headphones. The shorts have lots of pockets.]

Izzy walked barefoot along the beach from her guest house, towards the bonfire, wiggling her toes in the now cool sand. Always having lived in cities, she had never before seen such a gorgeous night sky before, and she was mesmerized. As she reached the edge of the torches, she spotted Jason, and sat down on a blanket next to him. She could smell the aloe vera from where she sat, and winced with sympathy.
"If you run out of aloe, let me know. I have some in my suitcase. But other than that, beautiful night, isn't it?"

((She has her big bag o' stuff with her, which includes a water bottle, her notebook and some assorted pens/pencils, her cell phone, a hoodie, her wallet, flipflops, clothes shes wearing, a small pocket knife (who doesnt love randomly carving the bark off a stick when sitting by a fire?) and some random smooshed granola bars floating around at the bottom of the bag.))

The workshop was over, all of its anxieties vanquished with a few pen strokes upon paper. A bonfire party seemed a fantastic way to ease over any of the remaining jitters, to have some fun. Javaid was certain that something more would happen, if not the next day, the day after. After all, they'd only written a sample, and he suspected critiques were inevitable. Wasn't that how writing workshops functioned?

His shoulders had lolled as he buried his feet within the sand, attempting to vainfully fix his springy hair into a neater mess before shuffling along to the group. Quietly, he had set his orange backpack down near one of the blankets, plopping down within the circle that had gathered.

"This was surprising." He had given a sheepish smile at Izzy and Jason, pausing a moment as if surprised by the smell that had caught Izzy's attention as well. Ow. Sunburns. "A bonfire I mean, not a sunburn - ah." He had gripped his bag, setting it on his lap. Talking about a sunburn probably didn't help it much.

"How'd it go for you two? The writing, I mean."

[[ Javaid has: CD Player (one CD), AA Batteries, One Change of Clothing + Swim Trunks, Cell Phone, Pocket Knife, and Hershey's Chocolate Bars inside of his backpack. ]]

Benjamin smiled as he watched the slowly forming group talk amongst themselves. He wondered if in the future they would rely on each other for support or go their own ways. It was hard to tell at this point but interesting to guess. So much of what lay ahead was unknown even to him.

" I've always enjoyed bonfires " He explained to no one in particular. " there's something a bit more intriguing about them to me than simply having a few logs burning in a fire place." Something more magical about the tall barely contained infernos.

"It's um, really bright, isn't it?" Jason asked lamely. "You don't get many of these out where I come from. You know, unless someone's burning trash in a barrel or something.

"I don't know," he said to Javaid. "I mean, it's been so long since I've actually written anything out by hand. It was probably illegible, you know? It doesn't help being left handed. It tends to smear your ink on the page as you're writing. And I don't even want to think of all the mistakes I probably made in grammar and spelling."

s**t, he was late. That seemed to be Ian's guiding light for the entire trip. He'd started out being late and continued the trend. Trucking across the sand in his faithful converse shoes, he hoped he wasn't the last to arrive. Hitching his guitar case on his back, he tromped toward the blazing fire set out on the beach. He counted four lounging there so if his guess was correct he couldn't have been the very last of the workshop group, just near the tail end.

"Hey guys, sorry I'm late, time got away from me." Cheerfully waving his hello to all of them he stepped into the circle of torches. "Some blaze huh, it's great!" The sand was invitingly warm and for a moment Ian just basked in the night. Setting his case down and the sitting beside it, Ian tilted his head up to check out the stars. He could use, oh say, another hundred nights like this.

((Ian's brought his guitar, his mini watt amp, extra batteries, a couple packs of marlboros -in the guitar case-, his lighter, a bottle of Jim Bean, some extra strings, his zune and headphones, and his cell phone.))

"I'm sure it couldn't have been all that bad." A sympathetic look had crossed his face at the sound of Jason's words. They all likely had errors - tremendous ones that they would later laugh about when they had graduated to the ranks of fair authors. "Must be hard to be a lefty. I can't even imagine attempting that." He had quirked quizzically, leaning back as if trying to gather the image of writing with the left hand.

The sound of Ian's voice had caught him off guard. He had blinked, tearing his head away from the fire to catch the cheerful greet. "Well hello there too!" Enthusiasm seemed nice - and feeling as awake as he did, it was a pleasure to see. "Damn right it's a good one. It's huge! I haven't seen a bonfire in a long time, to be honest." Javaid's lips had pushed forward as he turned to face the blaze once again. The warmth felt good, if not completely foreign. "Not since I was a teenager, anyway. You'd think you'd see more in California, but there aren't all that many. Television lies."

Izzy turned away from the conversation for a moment to wave at her housemate. "Nah, you're not late, pull up a blanket and have a seat." She said with a smile and turned back to Javaid and Jason.
"Yea, I haven't been to a bonfire since....well probably since girl scout camp in middle school" she said, chuckling to herself a bit.
"I grew up in a big city, not many bonfires. Or skies that look like this either."

Wide awake, and thoroughly enjoying the tongues of flame, Felia seems to arrive from the dead of night in a startling appearance, made more startling by her wide grin and eyes. Firefirefire. This gal isn't getting quite enough sleep on the island, and her .. enthusiasm for flame mixed with said perpetual drowsiness has caused some sort of coffee-like state of awareness.

"Damn, this is cool," she mutter softly, still grinning.

[She has: her messenger bag with notebook, pencil case, iPhone, and DS, along with her thick wallet and a few odds and ends like a piece of string, an old bus transfer, and a packet of gum.]

The evening carried on and eventually all of the workshop attendees made their way down to the beach. Amongst the general chatter and the consumption of food and drinks Benjamin found time to better examine each of the people there. As he did so the man though about the workshop samples they'd handed in and how they compared to the personalities their writers showed. It was intriguing to see the obvious connections with some and the mysteries with others.

Eventually the redhead stood and moved outside the ring of torches to stare out at the sea. "I want," he began his voice soft, almost apologetic. "To wish you all the best of luck." The moment the last word spilled from his mouth the fire in the innocent looking tiki-torches flared up. The flames became a brilliant blue before they were mysteriously gutted out along with the bonfire.

Benjamin didn't watch, the old man having felt a bit a guilt at this deception. All of them had hard roads ahead and some of them better suited for the travels they'd be on than others, well physically at least. It was for their own good just as his own journey had been but he could still not bring himself to watch them as their bodies left this plane of existence for another. Instead Benjamin waited until the torches came back to life before he turned around and moved to gather up the coolers and blankets that had been left behind.

(( Ok all of you may interpret as you like how it felt for your writer to be pulled from our world to the realm. You are free to start up a group or separate threads for your emergence in two strikes town. At this point there will be a lot more more writer and npc action to allow each of you to move your writer forward at the pace you feel is appropriate.)
