Nuala Xagarath Ankor Just read the Hugo- (in short story form) and Nebula-winning Flowers for Algernon. Powerful, brilliant book. Probably one of the best SF novels I've read, though I suspect it proved more disturbing to me than to most people. I like that one, too. Take a look at the film sometime. As adaptations go, I've seen worse. Film? Managed to miss the existance of that one. Hmmm. When was it released?

Ah, thread resurrection. Possibly quite appropriate for the book of which I am about to speak smile
An old uni friend has kindly introduced me to the wonder that is The Dresden Files. Those of you on the opposite side of the Atlantic to me may already be familiar with its television incarnation, courtesy of Sci-Fi.
Well, my friend got me book one for my birthday and then found she had a spare copy of book three, which she also gave me (along with a spare copy of a new series Randall & Hopkirk: Deceased book). Halfway through book one, I had to go order book two on play.com and, since they were having a multi-buy offer, I now have books four and five winging their way to me as we speak. I think I've found another series to collect! Like it isn't bad enough trying to finish the Doctor Who New Adventures and Biggles collections...
Harry Dresden is a wizard, the only one you'll find in the Chicago phone book. He works as a sort of supernatural private eye and is consultant to the Chicago PD when they have particularly weird and out of this world crimes to investigate. The prose reads very much in the vein of private eyes everywhere, but the supernatural elements are a new twist (to me, anyhow). In this book, someone has managed to kill two people by having their hearts explode out of their chests (yes, this series is definitely not for kids). Someone with some pretty dark magic must have done it and it really doesn't help that Harry is the only openly-practising wizard in Chicago...
