agree? disagree?

classic horror elements include, but are not limited to:
blood,
violence,
nudity (?) yesplz wink
strong language ...

obviously, horror flicks created before the rating system
was invented are exempt.

why, why not?
examples are good, yes?

I have seen some horror movies try to be PG-13 but it comes off to us hardcore fans as lame. It's a good way to start out and work your way up. Like for me I started off watching JAWS when I was 2 and now I watch almost all horror movies.

But for me I think maybe 90% should be rated R, leave the kitties something for them to see in theaters biggrin

Why bother? Part of the excitement and the appeal for horror films at a young age, is the R-rating. The PG-13 rating takes away the dark anticipation, and almost ruins the fun.

Which ones? Please, try and list some. I'm intrigued at what you would think a "good" pg-13 horror movie is.

Much preferable if the horror movie is rated R. But if the movie is amusing and it is less than R, bravo. razz

i havent seen the grudges or secret window.
i saw the first ring when it came out, and it was hella creepy.
i guess i assumed it was R ...
but, personally, i dont think of the sixth sense as horror.

A good horror movie does not need to be rated r. A good horror movie needs to have a story which engulfs you so deeply into it that you overlook logic and allow yourself to become scared.

A 'R' rating is simply meant to correlate the film to being edgy. How many films, made in the 80's, do we roll our eyes at them for having nudity and sex in them, especially during scene where it does not make sense? How about the transition of horror movies in present day Hollywood, going from story telling to a straight up gore fest?

I will not lie, a lot of horror films are rated R, but that is mostly due to the MPAA cracking down on what is shown to movie theater patrons. Imagine how our movies would be, without the incorporation of the Haze code?

PG - 13 horror movies which have either done well in the box office or have a following:

Drag me to hell
The Unborn
1408
Haunting in Conneticut
Secret Window
The Others
Anaconda
The Messengers
Tremors
Darkness Falls
Mothman Propechies
The Haunting
Blood and Choclate
The Cave
Gremlins 2
Monster Squad
White Noise
Willard
Arachnophobia
Killer Klowns from OuterSpace
The Entire 'Critters' franchise
Tales from the Crypt

Some of the best horror movies you will watch are either unrated (Feast, Hatchet) or foreign (The Eye (jap.) Shutter (Thai.) Ringu (jap.) Tale of Two sisters (korean) Cello (korean) One Missed Call (jap.)

Master Kanaka

The Lost Desperado

Watch The Changeling. It's one of the scariest movies out there, and if I'm not mistaken it was rated PG.

I agree that movies lately focus waaaaaay too much on gore.
There is no substitute for a genuinely creepy story.
the mothman freaked my s**t out. excellent example.
..i cant believe drag me to hell was not rated R. that movie made me cringe. in an awesome way ...

also +10 for monster squad
heart wink
