I would just like to add to this post:
Phantom Phan 4ever
There are too many "Mary Sues" out there and they really bother me. ie. "Me and my friend are transported back in time, can we save Erik?" Those ones are the worst. Ok, so lets just say you are transported back in time, heres what would happen:
1) You can't "save" Erik
Nope. Never. He's childish, selfish, insane, psychotic (read as: would likely murder you if you accidentally pissed him off enough). His issues from his 50 or so years of life would leave him so emotionally scarred that even the best shrinks in the world couldn't fix him. Love does not make someone's deep-seeded psychological issues just disappear. He needs a lot more than loving; like pills and many, many years of therapy.

2) He WILL NOT fall in love with you
It's actually possible, show him a little kindness he might either:
A) Kill you for patronising him
B) Attach himself to you like he did Christine wherefore you will be stuck with him to deal with the aforementioned consequences with no Raoul to save you.

3) And theres a good chance that if they knew the true, Gaston Leroux Erik, they would run away.
I didn't know what to expect when I first read the book, but as desensitised as I am even *I* felt kinda ill when I first read about his appearance.

And there are so many other ones out there that are just as bad. ie "Erik in highschool", "Erik is brought to the future", "Christine realizes she love Erik" etc.
I hate crossover/parallel universe type fiction when it just butchers the characters.
Erik in high school: What kind of issues other than excessive angst could a teenager have? He's not the same Erik at 15 as he is at 50.
Erik is brought to the future (or any other type of modern day versions, really): It's called plastic surgery, prozac, and therapy. It doesn't work these days. Forcing it to work is futile as well, as it makes the whole thing very contrived.
Christine realises she loves Erik: She can love him, it doesn't change the fact that he's described as being "touched in the head". Therefore caring about him doesn't mean she needs to go racing back to his technically dead a** (read the book) to make sweet love to him in the damp basement of the Opera House.

In short, 99%
(There is a 1% that aren't bad...but only 1%) of the fanfics suck and most are just repeats of other fanfics that suck.
I largely blame this on people wanting to make Erik happy. Erik is not Erik if he is happy. Therefore, making him happy will make the story suck. The end.
