We play whatever we're told to play... xd But for seating tests, it's C, G, D, A, E, B, F#/Gb, Db, Ab, Eb, Bb, and F...so the circle of fifths, basically.

Well our BD likes randomly picking a scale for us to do for warm ups, its excruciating because not everyone knows their minors...so he gets this horrible look on his face.
last year we had to know minors and majors...and since its deeply encouraged that we do honor groups/youth orchestras in my school we need to know our melodic minors too biggrin that gives me a head ache

I don't necessarily HAVE to practice any scales, but the ones I play most often (on trombone and trumpet.) are B-flat, B, C, E-flat, F, G, and A-flat. I do the scales, then thirds, and arpeggios. I don't know all my scales, but I know the pattern the notes come in, so I just think about it while I play it.

I'm jealous. gonk
I'm in college, and we have to play all majors along the full range of the instrument, all harmonic minors full range, all melodic minors full range, all whole tone scales full range, chromatic full range, and ALL arpeggios, full range.
And more things get added each semester. This is just what I'm up to, and I'm only a sophomore.
Word of advice: If you plan on going to college and majoring or minoring in music, practice the living heck out of your scales.

I play flute too lol, but we have to play all twelve scales for tryouts and all state. F, C, B flat, E flat, G, G flat, E , B , A, A flat, D, and D flat. Plus chromatic, which we have to play three octaves. The other scales we have to play two octaves and it's optional to play the two minor scales

I play percussion.
For all-district tryouts, we need to know one of the major scales and the chromatic. That's just for mallets. For snare drum, we need to know two rudiments. For timpani, we need to know how to read bass clef and tune the drums accurately.
But for our concert band, we play a random major scale every day. And then our director makes us figure out the minors and we run through them too. ...my made-up practice system helped me learn those better than Mr. Hartmetz's 'Okay let's do the melodic minor' system. xd

I remember the good old days...when we only had to know a few scales.
I'm a junior in High School now. Since my Freshman year we've done all 12 major scales and have to know all of the minors (melodic, harmonic, and the the regular ones). We also have to know all of the scales in thirds. Basically the magicall circle of fifths as we like to call it. I'm in top ensemble so if we don't have the order memorized forwards and backwards he fails us. Hahaha Chromatic is so easy now. :3 We have to play everything full range of we fail the tests that we have every six weeks. I play flute too.

we gotta play all 12 major and minor chords and the chromatic. It gets annoying at first because minor scales always throw me off
