(Hopefully this belongs here.)

Ok, the story I'm working on takes places in a world above earth. Think the opposite of the underworld or heaven (Same thing). The big thing happening is there are five kingdoms, each ruled by one person. In the shadows of all the kingdoms, there is an organization that wishes to conquer all the kingdoms, and then start their own rule.

Every person in this world are like angels, and each one will be named after a theological angel. All of the bad guys will be named after theological demons. My only problem is the head villain, I want to name him after one of the big demons, Lucifer: pride, Mammon: greed, Asmodeus: lust, Leviathan: envy, Beelzebub: gluttony, Satan/Amon: wrath, Belphegor: sloth. The name is going to made into an anagram and reveled in the end. I am going to try and use all the names for the villains. My only problem is the name.

I would like to name him Asmodeus, because the main character is named Raphael, and in the Bible it was Raphael that defeated Asmodeus, but the problem would be linking it up. A demon of lust wishing to cause strife to people instead using them for love. I just don't feel it when it comes to that.

If you can help, thanks.

Gee umm, I don't know if I can be of any help here. I mean, I usually have trouble with naming stories myself but naming characters? Nope! I usually forget about names that exist already cuz chances are they're just gonna be considered cliche or something. Some of the best villains don't have classic names like, Joe or Harry. Have you seen villains like Sephirot, for example? They don't have common names at all and some even sound cooler because they aren't like all the rest. Think hard about that and I'm sure you'll come up with an original name eventually. 3nodding

I'm more of a fan of original names rather than those directly taken from somewhere else. Having a name that sounds similar to that of another, no problem though. It's just similar, not the same.

Of course, Square Enix take names from lots of places - especially in mythology - but I think that's a bit different. They do their own take on the personalities of those names, granted, and this isn't really any different in that respect, but if you think about it, the mythological names in Final Fantasy are primarily summons - not main characters - and in games like Valkyrie Profile, Square have used a lot of the main factors in Norse mythology in order to do it, such as Asgard being the world of the Aesir, Odin and the Valkyries, and Midgard being the world of the mortals. It's a fantastic fictional take on Norse beliefs and mythology.

All the names you mention are from different sources really, so if you're trying to do something original or a particular take or something, those aren't really going to work from where I'm sitting. Give them original names, or original names that bear similarity to some of those, and I'm with you.

Well the fact that those names are used is supposed to contribute to the story symbolically. Each of the seven demons are demons in theology, and instead of passing a villain on each of them, I'm thinking of them be the actual demon, but for the longest time they wouldn't be suspected because of their name. Instead of Satan it'd be Nasta or something like that, but in the end it would be reveled who they really are. Kind of like, "Ha ha ha! I am Satan, one of the Princes of Hell, the demon of wrath, blah blah blah."

So, yer saying that if you take a name like Asmodeus you'll actually be naming him Suedomsa? I suppose that could be ok but since I'm not very familiar with the story I can't really say if it will work for me or not. Knowing that before hand sort of kills the surprise for me (the fact about the demon's name being backwards, I mean).
Naming anything can be a big deal so just think about it carefully. I'm sure you'll come up with something cool eventually. 3nodding

Well that would make a big part of it. Asmodeus would have some sort of crazy name that nobody would know (Most of the characters are going to have crazy names that nobody will know, most will be named after theological angels) and they will just suspect that name is the same. At the end, which ever demon it is (since all will be a part of the story and have anagram names) will say like "I am one of blah blah blah." If they die "Six shall follow." that will cause the person to start to suspect people of high rankings in the system.

Does that make sense?

Hmm, I'm not sure how much sense that makes to me exactly...
I know a thing or two about crazy names. My mom has seen some of the character names I've come up with and she's said: "those are some crazy names!" mrgreen

You mean like, "Legolas" for example? She told me that name was kinda like the ones I've been coming up with, he-he. mrgreen

I would go with something original. For me making names is really difficult but something original might be cool.
