Moisturizing eye cream:

Mix 2 tbsp grate cocoa butter and 3 tbsp coconut oil in a microwave safe container. Heat for 15-20 seconds then pour into a small clean container; let cool completely.

To use, apply under your eyes each night. Stored in a cool, dark place, it'll be good for up to a year.

Honey scented shine-boosting shampoo

Quick Clear-Skin Toner

7 uncoated aspirin
2 TBSP witch hazel
1 TBSP aloe vera gel
10 drops of tea tree oil or other antibacterial essential oil (optional, but recommended)

any 3-ish oz bottle (like you take on planes)

Combine ingredients. Fill the rest of the bottle with hot water. Let sit 24 hours. Pour through a paper towel to remove sediment (if you care to…matters not). Keeps for up to 14 days. (no preservatives, ya know)

WHY THIS WORKS

Salicylic Acid, the chemical exfoliant found in many acne treatments, facial masks, toners and wart/corn removers, is also a great headache medicine. However, it’s a little rough on the tummy so it’s ‘buffered’ with another molecule and we call it aspirin.

So, yes, the same stuff that fixes your face, cures your aches…and is derived from plants like willow. Which is why our ancestors from Indians to Hippocrates chewed on willow bark for a pain reliever.

*If you are allergic to aspirin (i.e.break out, itch, or whatever)…discontinue use.

Any sort of rum with bay laurel leaves (Laurus nobilis) steeped in it makes a delicious smelling after shave or cologne spritzer. I came up with the idea when I had no further use for my rum after making a rum cake and I was on a natural fragrance recipe kick.

I just looked up the mix on Google and found that this is not the same concoction as the "Bay Rum" product for sale. It is made with a different sort of bay leaves.

The one I made happened out of a happy accident, but if you like the smell of Bay Rum aftershave that you buy, this will probably be quite different. Either way I recommend giving it a try because it's one of my favorite scents.

Honey & egg shampoo.

Mix together two egg yolks, with an amount of honey equal to one egg yolk. Apply the goop to wet hair and rinse.

If you want extra shine you can use a ACV rinse.

Astringents

Astringents contract tissue fiber, and are generally applied after cleansing to firm and tighten the skin, and close the pores.

There are many common plants that have astringent properties that can freshen your skin when used in a preparation as an easy as a face rinse. A few tablespoons boiled in water have the potential to match your most expensive commercial astringents. Geranium leaves, oak bark, pine needles, and sunflower leaves are all known for the astringent properties.

Natural Astringents

;Cold water:Cold water is a natural astringent, the use of which is good practice for anyone who cares about a natural skin care treatment.

;Apple cider vinegar/lemon juice: Clean your skin and apply either lemon juice or apple cider vinegar with a cotton ball. The acid in these kitchen remedies helps flush out the pores and keeps the skin looking beautiful. Vinegar acts as an astringent and helps remove excess oil, kills bacteria, and normalizes the skin's pH. This remedy should work quickly.

Another method using apple cider vinegar is to "steam clean" the face by putting it over a pan of boiling water with a towel over your head to trap the steam. This will loosen the dirt and oil. Then apply the vinegar with a cotton ball to remove the dirt and oil buildup. Repeat twice, then dab more vinegar on the pores to close them. Use this method once a week.

;Aloe Vera:Split the leaf from an aloe vera plant and rub the gel into the skin. It is not necessary to wash it off. You can also buy aloe vera juice or gel at the health food store. Aloe vera, in addition to being a good astringent, is also a natural antibacterial, helps calm and heal the skin, and restores the pH balance. It’s great as an overall natural skin care treatment.

;Witch Hazel: Witch hazel is a strong anti-oxidant and astringent, which makes it very useful in fighting acne. Apply to the face with cotton pads.

;Strawberries: The astringent activity of wild strawberry is explained by its high content of tannins and proanthocyanidins. Strawberry juice is a folk remedy for blotchy skin, and strawberry leaf tea is a good source of vitamin C. A simple mask can be made by mashing up fresh berries and applying to your skin.

Absolut & Witch Hazel Astringent
Mix one part Absolut (plain) vodka and one part witch hazel in a small bottle.
Add a few drops of Lavender extract, or any other natural scent that you prefer -- you can skip this if you want!
Shake up before use, put on cotton ball/swab, and swipe over your face after cleansing but before moisturizing!
This mix helps clear up dirt from your pores as well as acne (it has worked WONDERS for me), but also keeps your faces moisture!
Store in cool, dry place until it's finished -- I like to make it in a small bottle so I can have a fresh mix every one or two weeks.
It also feels amazing if you put it in the fridge and want to cool your face with it.

Mint Tea Spritz
This one is super simple.
Steep a bag of peppermint or mint tea in some water, put it in a spray bottle, and store it in the fridge.
Spritz on your face in the morning for a great, cold pick-me-up and facial toner/pore closer!

Honey Salt Facial Scrub *
Mix one part organic honey and one part Real Salt in a container.
Mix with a mixing stick and store the container in a cool, dry place in the bathroom.
Scrub on your face, chest, or other acne prone area in the shower, before bed, or even in the morning.
Rinse off.
Separation occurs, so mix before every use.

* This one could be harder to make because the salt is difficult to find in some states -- I'm not sure if you can use plain sea salt or any other natural salt, but it's worth a try if you want to!
