Thursday August 29th, 2008

Jay sat on the banks of the River Tales, the reverie at his back, watching Nabia enjoying her swim in the calm shallow pools that form on the edge of the water. By his side sat an oddly coloured chipmunk -Chiru, Jay had named it. It was mostly white, with a teal band running down its back.

"Pachi, Pachirisu!" It cried out happily, munching on the biscuits Jay was handing to it. Sparks danced around its cheeks, and Jay watched it warily.

On his other side, his backpack leaned against him. It was oddly warm, heated by just a hint of magic, and empty of its usual items. The bag of seeds and his master book of stories were all stored safely by his hammock in the Canopy. At the moment, his backpack held two eggs.

Both of them he had received when he met a purple Gargoyle up in the Ridgeback mountains. The Gargoyle had been cryptic in his warnings about something big that might happen. After an hour or two of talking, the kyn had entrusted him with these two eggs -one of which Jay suspects was the Gargoyle's own egg, although he wasn't sure how that was possible- and vanished.

While he had his assumptions on the hatchling within the gargoyle egg, Jay was baffled by the other egg. It wasn't of a shape familiar to Jay, who had spent numerous years with all of the know Kyn species, and the Chronicler was worried that it looks almost deformed. He was just hoping that whatever kyn hatches from this egg will come out healthy and whole.

The odd-shaped egg shuddered inside the protection of the heated backpack, close to hatching. It could also have been that it knew maybe this place wasn't exactly where it belonged. The egg's occupant, however, was just as confused about its existance and predicament as Jay was. Although he realized he was different, instinctively knowing even inside his shell, he also knew he was the same. The egg shuddered again, jostling the backpack with a little more force. The tiny pre-hatchling inside was peeping, much in the fashion of a crocodile. He wanted out.

"Nabia, don't go off too far." Jay warned his small blue eastern kyn as it leaped out of the water, did a somersault, and happily dived back in. Nabia had always enjoyed the water, and Jay was glad that the den had been placed next to a river.

Jay looked down to his bag when he felt his backpack move slightly. Jay quickly scrambled onto his knees and opened up the backpack. He saw the small deformed-looking egg move again, and was also surprised to see the purple gargoyle egg cracked.

He loosened up the top of the bag and carefully lowered it down around the eggs. He was excited, as always when watching new kyns hatch, but there was a twinge of nervousness in that excitement. Jay still didn't know what to expect from these two eggs.

Nabia poked her head above the water and watched Jay curiously, sensing the emotions that reverberated through their bond. She broke from the water's surface and the small eastern drifted towards Jay, finally finding a comfortable perch curled around the Chronicler's arm. The water drifting off her scales moistened jay's sleeves, creating a dark splotch.

Jay suddenly remembered that last thing the Purple Gargoyle had told him: do not take us near others until at least we are adults, and looked down at Nabia.

No, it couldn't be helped, Nabia had to be here with him. Jay hoped that it wouldn't be too much of a problem.

The mudball egg wobbled again, the peeping quieting a moment before the tiny narrow nose poked through. His nostrils flaired, taking in his first breath though still stuck inside his shell. The little one was miniscule, like his egg, which was proving to be an almost impenetrable fortress to the little Kyn. He started squawking again, as if announcing that he was indeed alive and ready to greet the world.

Jay watched as both eggs began cracking, and a tiny snout poked out of the hole in the smaller egg. The Gargoyle egg though, looked like it was doing much less progress- until an entire section of the egg simply crumbled apart, laced with cracks Jay hadn't noticed.

And out of the Gargoyle egg stumbled a small purple kyn. Jay recognized it immediately as the kyn he met in the ridgeback, albeit smaller and more wet.

Curious, Nabia slightly uncurled herself from Jay's arm, and her head carefully bobbed forward towards the newly hatched Kyn. She touched her nose to the gargoyle's, then abruptly shot back to Jay's side as the hatchling bristled at the contact.

Jay felt disapproval emanate strongly from Nabia, and Jay simply just smiled as he felt a twinge of jealousy amongst the small eastern's emotions. She's going to have to share Jay's attention with the new arrivals.

Jay worked on wiping the Gargoyle hatchling dry (with audible complaint from him), while keeping an eye on the progress of the other egg.

Jay didn't have long to clean off the gargoyle before the other hatchling got his small teeth around the edge of the eggshell and pulled it apart. He clambored out, dripping wet and squawking. Krishna was a strange-looking Kyn, that was for sure. Pale and bright green eyes and almost no markings, no wings either. The worst of it was that there simply was no connection between him and Jay, none to speak of whatsoever. Jay might have well have stumbled across a hatchling in his nest waiting for his mother.

Of course, this hatchling was just out of his shell. He was having trouble standing on his two legs, ending up on his stomach in the egg remains, tail lashing. Poor little guy had absolutely no balance it seemed.

Jay leaned back a bit as the smaller kyn crawled out of its egg. It was very small compared to hatchlings Jay was used to. And looking at it, Jay could not determine its species either. Completely bewildered, Jay helped the new hatchling up after it toppled over, and worked on getting this little one dry as well.

He was worried- Jay felt no bond forming between him and this little guy. Coupled with its odd appearance and its small size, Jay wondered if the egg's odd shape was an indication of come sort of complications in this little's one's growth.

Nabia watched the new arrival with narrow eyes. She was very quiet now, and Jay could feel her uneasiness. Jay brushed it off though, Nabia was just unused to having other Kyns around.

((Hey, who gives Mewtwo and Krishna their names?))

((Good question. I think Mewtwo would know. I'm guessing he grows, mentally, faster than other Kyn. He probably could mind speak, at least partially, now even.))

The little one struggled up to his feet again, shying away from the rag and perhaps even Nabia's slight glare. He chirped, faintly, as if uncertain where it was in this group he belonged. It didn't take him too long to decide, stumbling over to huddle at the newly hatched gargoyle's side. The smaller Kyn was less of a threat than the two larger ones, but he also felt he knew this other Kyn already.

Jay, with difficulty, pried Nabia off of his arm. When he had first received Nabia's egg, he had hoped she would become an adult before he found a second egg. Jay knew that taking care of three hatchlings -especially the small pale one- would be a challenge. But he was confident that he will manage.

Jay had to admit though, his den wasn't the best suited for young ones. While Nabia's simply been sleeping under Jay's blanket to ward off the cold at night, it's not like all three of the Kyns will fit. With the den just being a system of trees and plants intertwined, there was not much protection from the elements. Even the cave carved into the cliff at the back of the den was not deep enough to provide the shelter most underground dens would.

Jay had been working on that problem for the past few days. Foreseeing the possibility of flightless kyns, Jay had opted against anything up in the Canopy level of the den, and he was glad for this foresight now. Having not much else to do, Jay had been able to construct a rather sturdy hut at the base of the Large oak tree supporting most of the den's canopy system. If it did rain, the big tree would ward off most of the water, and the slightly water-resistant hut would keep the rest out. It was big enough for two or three people to fit in comfortably, so the two hatchlings should be ok with it for a while.

It wasn't perfect, but it would do nicely until the two grew big enough to sleep out in the open safely.

Jay carefully picked the two hatchlings up, so that he could get them to the shelter he had built. Nabia floated behind Jay, stopping for a moment to pick up Jay's backpack for him.

He squawked again, this time in fear, at being picked up. The little guy probably would have bitten Jay, but he was too worried about being dropped to try and get himself out of the other's hand. It was a very long way to the ground, afterall, especially for the little wingless hatchling. Instead, he dug his claws into the human's hand and hunkered down. Jay would have to be careful with this one - he didn't instinctively trust who should be his human rider.

Both kyns did not seem happy at being picked up, but Jay kept a tight hold on the two of them as he made his way to the small hut. He winced slightly as the odd pale one dug small but sharp claws into his hand, but he didn't flinch, careful not to jostle the hatchling too much. It frustrated Jay that there was still no connection forming between himself and the little one. Something was wrong. While he could send the Gargoyle reassuring emotions, he could not do this with the other one.

Jay finally reached the small shelter he had constructed, and carefully lowered both of the hatchlings onto the ground. The shelter had three walls and a roof, the fourth side was open to the air except for a blanket draped down it. Jay pushed the blanket aside and tied it to one of the walls temporarily.

Jay wished for the guidance of Osprey, his adoptive father, then. He would know what was wrong with the small pale hatchling. He always seemed to know everything about all the kyns he cared for, even the occasional odd one. Jay has managed to get his first three kyn, yet all of them are strange in some way. Even some of the forest animals he has met -like Chiru, who was able to generate electricity somehow- are not what he had come to expect. Jay disliked not knowing.

"Well then you two, welcome to Reverie." He didn't know what else to say. He should give the two of them names...

Jay thought back to the time when he met the Gargoyle. He had appeared as an adult, had spoken and reasoned, and everything. Had he mentioned his name at all during that encounter?

My name...is Mewtwo.

Jay started as he realized the Gargoyle hatchling spoke to him. He wasn't as surprised as he ought to, maybe it's because he has come to expect such surprises from the Gargoyle.

"Well, nice to meet you then Mewtwo." Jay then turned to the odd hatchling, half-expecting it to chirp its name into his mind as well.
