I found out someone was using the name "No Such Machine" on another site. I loved that name! I was going to carry it to my Gaia grave! Since I have no legal claim on the name as my intellectual property, I can't very well send them a "cease and desist". But it still kinda burns my breeches. I came up with that name, dammit! I hate being ripped off.

that really sucks! The same thing happened to me a couple years ago. I continue to use this name though.
Your name was really cool; it's funny because when I first saw it, I somehow felt like I had heard it before. I didn't realize you had made it up. It was a name that would stick in someone's head even if they forget where they heard it from; so that's probably what happened with the guy who ripped it off. I wouldn't have given it up so quick, though... there can't be two No Such Machine's on different sites?
But if you like your new name better, that's cool, it's a good name too.

Ah! Nasty business indeed! I rather liked the sound of 'No Such Machine'.
Why, the username I used years back - Vanghar (don't ask) - was all well and good until I found out there were at least two other people using it. The unfortunately confusion that followed, combined with my growing disliking of the name, led to that which I use now.
On a more 'WUT?' note - I have an amateur radio license, giving me the callsign "M3NYE". Pretty unique, I thought, and have always used it for things where a serious username was called for.
However, when I came to register for Twitter using it, I found it taken. By an M. Nye, admittedly, but where did the 3 come from?
M = UK, 3 = Foundation License, NYE = three letters I got to chose, my mother's maiden name

I have to say, I have had many a title reserved for me alone in times past, throughout many games and forums, starting with celticruff, back when I played runescape in seventh grade. That was my first, that i still use. Since, I have had Zenath, Kantras, Merik Kriff, Malik Fisthail... Yes, they were all roleplay characters, but also pretty good online handles. The latest I was gonna use failed at being original I guess. Gimp, or sometimes Gimpley... Oh! But I have forgotten Jamesonn, and Crowley. Crowley is the name I used for a local steampunk community on Livejournal... And I am rather fond of it in connection to SP things. It would be my Steampunk name, I suppose, were I to take up a secondary alias- last name, that is.

Just a thought, but why not get your name back and just put a little thing in your signiture stating somthing like: The original "No Such Machine" (with tm and the date it was established) that way people will know its yours. besides, anyone who really matters to you probably already knows its YOUR name, so its not like they can truely take it away from you...
Btw, what site was it that somone took your name anyways?

You could always steal a well-know acronym and call yourself "No Such Apparatus", could you not?

Well, I used to go by "Vahn Malice" as both a screen name and alias until people kept allowing my screen name to influence how they understood my posts. Plus, I grew out of it, and really, only 12-year-olds put "malice" in their screen names, thinking that it's smart. (So I changed it.)
But I do use a screen name on a couple of sites that there's at least five other guys using. I use it for anonymity and so that, even if someone were to web-stalk me, it'd make it much more difficult.
But most of the time, people just happen to take the same screen name. There are a handful of people who will do it on purpose, either because they're crazy enough or spiteful enough, but there's really nothing you can do.
I hope you have fun erasing my post style, though.
John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway. John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy." Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS" There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons. "This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!" So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall. "HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons "I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill. "No! I must kill the demons" he shouted The radio said "No, John. You are the demons" And then John was a zombie.
