"How long has it been, brother..."

Phere sighed as she lowered herself onto the park bench. It was a nice day; the clouds were out, but just enough sky was showing to indicate twilight was threatening. The air was drenched in the smell of oncoming rain as the clouds hovered overhead. These were always her favorite kind of days, they reminded her of the family she once had so long ago.

As she watched the children, families and other lives passing through the park that evening, Phere couldn't help longing for her tribe. The following day after her brother passed, there were many fights within the blood that everyone ended up going their own way, leaving her alone. Whether any were still alive, she would never likely know. The thought would sometimes cross her mind, wondering if they were alright or how they were coping. Maybe they all ended up going to other clans or making their own. They never approved of her brother's ideas of humans. It was his ideas that made her come to accept them, to give them a chance, and now she lived among them.

She could still remember that last night with her brother.

"Despite what they all say, the humans aren't as bad as they seem. Their ideals are much different than our own, but that doesn't mean that they're entirely bad, sister. I don't know why our tribe doesn't see this..." Tahlir said as he walked to his high window to open the curtains. It was a nice night, one that had the light smell of rain lingering from the previous shower.
"It has never made sense to me why we can't coexist with the humans. I understand that our appearances are very opposed, but that shouldn't matter."

Phere watched her brother glide around the room as he spoke as she sat on the edge of his bed. She'd never seen him so restless at night, as much as he enjoyed sleep. Despite the fact that their bodies didn't need it, he viewed it as his own way of meditating.

"Brother, even if it is just me and you that accept the humans, there's high doubt that the humans would accept us in return. They barely accept each other as it is. We are far different than they. Do not let the clan's inability to accept to heart."

Tahlir walked to his sister and knelt beside her, reaching for her hand. "But it doesn't have to be this way! I know together we can show our blood that it is possible to live with the humans!"

There was a great pain in his beautiful, red eyes. A pain that reached Phere on many levels. She leaned down and kissed her brother's forehead, slowly standing up from the bed.

"One day, we will, brother. We must work at it," she said as she walked towards the door. "We will show them... goodnight, brother."

If only her clan could see her now. Despite the fact that she was finally able to live among the humans, regardless of it being under Glamour, it pained her that Tahlir was never able to be at her side for it. At least he was able to watch from wherever he was now. This thought comforted Phere, though it only made her ache for him more.

As night finally reached and the first stars peaked through the clouds, Phere decided it was now time to go back to her apartment. She'd gotten used to the lifestyle of humans and knew that it always seemed strange for people to be out after dark, at least if they were on their own. It was probably best to be inside before it started raining, anyway, and the wind was getting a little restless as she listened.

The walk home was pleasant as the cool air rushed around her, though something about it was odd. Almost as if the wind was beckoning her. Phere's eyes widened and momentarilly froze in place.

"Tahlir...?" The name slipped from her mouth before she could even realize, quickly placing her hand over her mouth. Was he trying to speak to her...? It wasn't too much farther to her apartment, but she ran the rest of the way, eager to be home. Almost like the wind was telling her she had to be there. Like something was waiting for her.

Standing outside her apartment, Pherenice fumbled with her keys as she struggled with the door. Usually quite composed, something had her worked up. Was there really going to be something waiting for her inside her apartment room? Whatever it was, she paused with her hand on the knob as she finally got it unlocked.

As she slowly opened it, she closed her eyes and held her breath, almost afraid of what may be on the other side.

Why...? Why was this making her panic so much?

Closing the door behind her, Phere drew in a breath as she opened her eyes. Slowly... slowly... nothing. The room was just as she had left it; books neatly in the shelves, the T.V. tucked away in the entertainment center, and a few loose magazines on the corner of the table. Why had she worried over nothing? If only this small ping of concern in her chest would go away. Maybe she had overlooked something? Making a quick sweep of the room, whatever had bothered her wasn't there.

"I guess it was nothing..." she yawned, placing a hand over her mouth. It had been a long day and she was ready for sleep. Ever since her brother passed, she wanted to be as close to him as she could, picking up his smallest habits. Phere cleaned whatever messes she had made while searching and turned off the light on her way to her room.

Flicking on the light, she froze at the sight on her bed. Was that an... egg? A rather large egg, at that. Such a lovely sight, regardless of how strange. The shade of blue almost paralleled her own skin tone if she weren't under Glamour, fading into a darker shade towards the bottom and white at the top. The strange mark that adorned the egg was strangely familiar as she reached for it, compelled to see if it was as smooth as it looked. Why did it remind her of...?

As she touched the egg, her heart raced at a million an hour. Pulling it close to her, Phere quickly breathed in. It was warm... as if it had just been had or if something had been sitting on it. The though of whatever could lay an egg this big wasn't very comforting, but the heat from it was soothing enough. This must have been what the wind was telling her about.

Gently tucking the new bundle into the sheets next to her, she herself cuddled into the covers to drift off.

The next morning, the first thing Phere saw was the strange egg lying next to her. "So it wasn't a dream..." Somehow... the thought comforted her. The winds had wanted her to keep it, and you don't argue with the wind. Gently reaching for it from under the sheets, she ran her hand slowly down the side, enjoying how warm it was to the touch. If only she could place this familiar feeling.

Well, whatever it was, she still had a long day planned. The thought of leaving it there alone as she went out wasn't very alleviating, she couldn't take it with her. Sure, it was quite normal to see mothers carrying children, but never once had she seen a human carrying around a huge egg.

"Will you be okay here alone, little one?" she asked, knowing fairly well that there would be no reply. Whatever had kept it warm all night was sure to keep it toasty while she was gone, right?

After looking down the hallway to her room one last time, Phere locked the door behind her and set out. Still having to work at a nearby hotel and later get groceries, the day was nowhere near done.

Even though working as a maid can be hard, it gave her some alone time to think about things and not have to worry about other people except for the occasional resident wanting extra towels. All that really had to be done was make beds and clean, which was simple enough. Keeping an eye on the clock, she hoped that today would go by quick so she could hurry and run her errands and go home. If it had been a regular day, she wouldn't care. Just the thought of the egg being alone made Phere worry. It was so warm, what if whatever was inside was about to hatch?

What if it hatched while she wasn't there? Most young have to depend on the first thing they see when born... what if whatever was inside would die or something without anyone there?

Phere rubbed her eyes and tried to think of other things. The day would be over soon and then the next few days would be off, she wouldn't have to worry about leaving the poor thing alone for the next few days. That was a plus, at least. And there was only about an hour and a half of work left, anyway.

Even after work, the feeling wouldn't go away. She hurried to the store and got only necessities, not wanting to spend as much time as she originally planned there. Luckily her checker wasn't the nice old man that would often chat with her as he worked, she didn't have time for that. After thanking the young girl, Phere ran home as fast as she could.

I'm sure the egg is fine... it's probably still lying on the bed where I left it. I doubt it would have hatched by now.

After climbing the few flights of stairs to her floor, she layed her groceries on the floor as she dug for her keys and quickly unlocked the door, setting the bags on the counter so she could go check her room.

Just as she thought, there the egg was, sitting contently on her pillow. "What a relief... you had me worried," Phere sighed as she gently picked the egg up and placed it on her lap. Whatever was inside, she was already attached. Maybe it would hatch soon and she'd have a new companion.

"I hope you like me, little one."

The nightmares won't stop, and they're getting more and more vivid with each passing night. There's no reason for you to understand what's going on, other then the fact you're not sleeping well and it's starting to show during your daytime activities ( don't worry, the hair will grow back) . The only connection you can make seems to be that your dreams are a lot calmer when you're sleeping with that strange egg, if only just a little. Its presence calms you down and makes some of the realities of the nightmare less intense, but do you dare test this theory? You can't stop sleeping forever, but do you dare see if this egg has what it takes to make the dreams stop . . .?

...Hot. Too hot...

Phere jolted up from under the covers, sweat soaking her night wear; her hair matted against her face and shoulders. Why... why had she decided to pick up her brother's horrible habit of sleeping? She didn't need it, physically, but for some reason it made her feel so much closer... so much more in-tune with her long gone sibling. Gently rubbing the sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand, Phere sighed in relief. Luckily it was only a dream. Just a nightmare. But... why were they so real? Each time... she could almost mistake them for reality. Each time, she could mistake them for reality. And each time, they only got worse. But... why?

"...Tahlir?" Pherenice's eyes widened, quickly patting the empty spot on the bed next to her. Where was her egg? "T-Tahlir, where have you gone?" Throwing the cover off, she tossed her legs over the side and frantically switched on the light. A bright blue gleam and a soft flutter caught her attention. Sighing in relief, she stood and slowly walked towards the egg layed gently on top of some spare sheets in her dresser drawer. Cradling it in her arms, Phere walked back over to her bed and sat on the edge, staring at the strange egg. It seemed to notice her, flitting its wings lightly, almost seeming to try and roll closer to her.

Eyes quickly getting heavy, Phere rubbed her face and stood to put the egg back where it was quietly nestled. If she didn't get sleep soon, she would nearly be useless at work in the morning. "Brother, what have you done to me?" Collapsing into her bed, she rolled into the covers and fell asleep once again.

...Dark.

Once again jolting up from slumber, Pherenice let out a small scream as she clutched her sheets. Tears covering her face, hair stuck to ever piece of visible skin. Just as she had finally calmed down, another yelp; her alarm went off. Time to get up, already. Palming her forehead, she slammed her free fist against the bed.

"Dammit, Tahlir..."

Shaking her head, Phere realized that she shouldn't blame someone who isn't even there for picking up on the habits of others. Once again tossing the sheets aside, she got out of bed to get ready for the day. "Good morning, little one. Did you sleep well?" Smiling down at the egg in her arms, her expression quickly changed as the egg seemed to flutter in response. Could... could it understand her? It was just an egg... how could that happen? Was it close to hatching?

Smiling once more, the thought of this one hatching... this one being like little Tsuji... it excited Pherenice. "Will... will you be out of there soon, little one?" Another flit. The egg itself seemed rather excited! Did this mean that it was true? Was he really going to hatch sometime soon?

...Late.

"Pherenice, it's twenty after. Where were you? You know this isn't good on your record."

Phere flinched, "I'm sorry, ma'am... I... I have not been sleeping well as of late, and I had some short errands to take care of..." Worn out, hiding her real skin and hair tones was slightly more difficult; her hair looked a dull black and her skin slightly sickish blue. Not too noticable, but too much so for Phere's taste. With her stamina like this, there wasn't much she could do about it.

"That isn't a good excuse, Phere. You've got two more shots before I have to do something about this," the hotel owner huffed away, keys jingling with each 'waddle.' Phere held her face in her hands. "Do something?" This was her first time being late... what had the owner so worked up? Whatever it was, this wasn't going to end well. Either way, she was here now and she had work to do.

Who knew that something so seemingly easy, such as cleaning, would wear you out so easily? Her job had never had this effect on her, before. Why...? Without realizing, Phere soon found herself lying on the nearest bed, slowly dozing off. Like a child, she struggled to keep herself awake, realizing this could be bad if she were caught. She still had so much more to do in this room, let alone the other rooms of the hotel. Why in the world was she this drained? Sleep deprivation had never gotten to her before, why now? Why, dammit?

Just... just for a minute...

...Pain.

"PHERENICE ARAXIA!"

Phere bolted up, covered in sweat and tears leaking from wide, red eyes. There she was, the owner, glaring angrily down. Down at Phere. The resident of the room had called the owner down once finding her asleep on their bed, an angry expression all over their face. Not only was the room unfinished, the sheets would have to have been washed, again. "M-ma'am, I-"

"No excuses, Pherenice. You've got one more shot. You're dismissed; go home."

Pherenice's heart sank. One more shot... She was lucky that she hadn't been fired on the spot, but one more chance... She had to get sleep tonight. If only there was a way to end these nightmares...

...

Another morning. Another painful night gone. This one, of course, worse than the last. Worse than the last time she had even slept. So real... so painful... Phere's eyes burned as she tried to get used to the glow of the lamp on her side table. A flit of the egg's wings caught her attention. He seemed... rather lively today. He was in constant motion, almost as if he were vibrating. She stood, stumbling to the drawer to gently hold him.

"Is... something going to happen today, little one?"

A quick jolt as a response.

Phere's heart lept. "Something... good? Something bad...?"

A twitch of the wings. It didn't seem to respond to a certain word in the last set of questions... what was going to happen today...?

...

"Pherenice Araxia, follow me." Why had the boss suddenly decided to speak to her...? She still had one more chance, right? One more chance to screw up before having to go? Before being terminated? Nervousness surged through Phere as if her blood was made of the stuff. What could it be...? "Ma'am... what is thi-"

The woman held up her hand to silence Pherenice. She was obviously in a foul mood. Though, given the last few days, this seems to be normal. Having lead Phere to her office, the owner offered the door for her and quickly shut it behind. "Pherenice, I'm afraid you're going to have to resign your position."

Faltering, Phere stared in shock. Did... did she really just...? "Wh...what? Ma'am, I don't... I don't understand. I was under the impression that I had one more cha-" Another wave of the hand to silence her. "Pherenice, this is hard to do, but given your performance as of late, I don't want to give you that last chance. I've had complaints about your work and this is it. You may leave." The woman turned her back to Phere and waved her off.

So cold.

Still in uniform, Phere walked into her apartment building, head hanging low. She walked through the lobby straight towards the stairs. A bright blue blur had caught her attention... was that... hair? A man with bright blue hair and a dark hoodie stood next to the front desk, staring at her. It actually wasn't really that surprising. She hadn't had a chance to change out of her uniform, after all. It's no wonder he stared the way he did. And did... did that little boy have purple hair? More and more people are allowing attractive hair colors, it seemed. Glancing back down, she started up the stairwell, up to floor three.

Why did it turn out like this? Things had been rough, but never this rough. Unlocking her door, Phere heading right to the egg in her drawer and hugged it close to her chest. The one thing that could make her comfortable... the one thing that she trusted. The egg flitted gleefully in her arms, happy to feel that she was back so early. Falling backwards onto her bed, she held the egg in her arms as she slowly nodded off, too tired to realize she was doing so or to even care. She was home; she was safe with her little friend...

...

...

...

The sun had already started setting before Phere had woken up. Golden-orange rays of light hit her tan walls, her eyes feeling well rested for the first time for as long as she could remember at this point. A small movement next to her. Was... something clutching her shirt...? A small moan brought Pherenice into reality, quickly getting up out of bed to look at the small child laying on the bed, next to where she was.

He... he had hatched?!
