At work we had a diversity fair and one of the activities was called "Ask Me About" and you wore a tag that said ask me about and you wrote a subject on it. I put Japanese anime/manga. No one knew what it even was. I had to break it down to cartoons and comic books to get them to understand what it was. That was so sad. I can't discuss any of my favorite things with people since they don't even know what it is. My office is covered with anime posters and wall scrolls and the shelves of my bookcase are crammed with figures and manga but they still don't know what it is. Sad. If it weren't for places like this guild I'd be so lonely. Sorry, I just had to share. Does anyone else know people who are anime/manga challenged? How do you educate them and what series would you start them with?

most deffinately.... My friends won't even learn they are called manga they call them "Backwards upside down books" >_<# you figure after me have at least two on me everyday for the past I dunno 4 years or so they would learn what they were called

Well, first off they don't want to learn to read them, but if they did...Hmmm seeing as all my friends are some what girly I would probably steer clear of shonen. I would start with maybe a comedy shojo. Like Ouran! ^_^ Possibly DNAngel for some of the more tom-boyish ones, then once they were hooked I would introduce them to my all time fave FMA.

yeah... actually all the people I know are WAAAAY off manga/anime

well, my bro sometimes watches some anime with me.. but he hates reading so no manga

my cousin was the one who introduced me to anime.. so yeah, I have someone who knows

and I have, like, one friend (who isn't really close) who I watch some anime with (sometimes read a few chapters)

other than that... NO,, some may even reply as "manga?? you mean mango right?" whenever I mention manga ^^'

GOD.. well, what to do

Slowly and carefully; perhaps even subtly. As for what series to start them off on, it would greatly depend on what they're into. Someone who loved food/cooking would be steered towards Oshinbo, while someone who was more into sports would be shown something like Prince of Tennis or Slam Dunk (depending on the specific interest). Death Note - especially the LA BB Murder Case novel and the three live action movies - is a great series for getting a mystery/thriller fan.

Going at it from a music or artistic point of view can also work. My mom was not an anime fan, but she liked the long lines of xxxHolic.

Unfortunately, there's always going to be people who are adamantly opposed to anime/manga, and absolutely nothing you can do will change that. Their minds are already made up and no fact or evidence is going to change it.

In the school I go to, I had a manga book on my desk and the teacher picked it up (and read it the wrong way of course)
so I point out their mistake
and he called my book "broken" -.-
and then the rest of the school dont even know what it is!?! theyre all like, "why is this book backwards?" and blah blah blah

Well i introduced anime/manga to my one friend.
I showed her death note
she fell in love with it
I would reccomend using Death Note as an introducer unless you think the person might think Death Note is too complicated because it does involve some thinking....

well im going to shut up now because I wrote alot ^.^

byeeeeeee fellow otakus!!!!

If they asked about it nicely and seemed to genuinely care, I'd recommend something that I think they'd like according to their personality.

If they were one of those people who thinks it's all lame kiddy shows, I'd tie them down and force them to watch Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, just to scare 'em.

If you want to help the anime-challenged, go to studio Ghibli. Those films are light-hearted and not too hardcore or filled with concepts too complicated. THe dubs are nice in my opinion so you don't even have to get them sub-savvy. Then I recommend a light anime like, say Ouran? whee

But I believe the cure would be your favorite Studio Ghibli film.

Anime and manga are comparatively popular in my state. I ran into four fellow fans just at Jury Duty by wearing my Death Note tee.... so here, I think many people know what it is. I won't say all, and other fans are not an incredibly common find, but I don't really have your problem.

Fullmetal Alchemist might be a good starter anime. It's got a little of everything, and the opening sequence will dispel the impression that it's for children without it being too off-putting.

I know how you all feel. I mea at school with my friends, we all now, but some other friends of mine have no idea. I always break it up into this:

"It is a japanese cartoon"

and they seem to understand.

When I explain manga is pretty much the same thing. It sucks explaining thngs. -_-

It's a bit sad. One time, I had my Negima manga on my desk in math class. I took a quick peek at one of the pages and my math teacher said "Put that comic book away". I was pissed off, but I understood that my math teacher never knew what a manga was.

Also, in my school, I always read my mangas during quiet time in class and people always ask me "Why is your book backwards??". That one question always annoys me because that question hits me everyday in school...-_-
