Cerebro is the device used by Professor X to locate mutants. Cerebro amplifies the brainwaves of the user. In the case of telepaths, it enables the user to detect traces of other mutants worldwide. Using Cerebro can be extremely dangerous, and telepaths without well-trained, disciplined minds put themselves at great risk when attempting to use it. This is due to the psychic feedback that users experience when operating Cerebro. As the device greatly enhances natural psychic ability, users who are unprepared for the sheer enormity of this increased psychic input can be quickly and easily overwhelmed, resulting in insanity, coma, permanent brain damage or even death, so use with extreme caution.

Things were going as planned in the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning. It was a Friday afternoon and everyone was getting ready for the weekend, but the tests came first. The only bad thing about this school, is that is was impossible to skip without someone noticing. Well, Skylar had managed to avoid getting caught for now. She wasn't hiding in any of her normal spots. The computer room was filled by a class. The library was just about empty. All that was outside was the sound of animals and the wind. If one wanted to find her, they would have to look for her in a different spot. Well, do you give up? Here's a hint: try a room that has electronics in it. If Cerebro was your first guess, good job. If not, you are a looser. If someone was to enter the room, they wouldn't be able to see her at all. On the platform was a black rope that wound around it several times. It was taut, meaning something, or in this case, someone, was at the end of it. Just peek over the side and you will find the half-asian technopath dangling from the rope in her uniform with a piece of Cerebro and some tools floating around her.

It was an understatement to say that Skylar was having a very bad week. It was the week of the anniversary she watched her mother die by the Brotherhood a few years ago. It had been an accident but she didn't really care how it happened. Monday had been spent working on computers trying to get her mind off of it. Wednesday had been spent in her room trying to cry over it, something she tried to do countless times. Thursday after class she had an appointment with Dr. McCoy since she wasn't feeling too good. The symptoms: fatigue, easy bruising, and aching joints. It could have been a plethora of different things, but this had been present for about a month. Maybe it was mono! That would be good news. Today she had actually gotten the diagnosis. It was cancer. Leukemia. Instead of running off to first period in the morning, she went back to Beast's lab and began the tests to figure out what type of leukemia was plaguing her body. They were very painful since the test needed to come from the bone marrow, and their was only one way of getting that. In her back was a piece of gauze where he stuck the needle to extract some bone marrow from the hip. To Skylar, the type didn't matter. Cancer never sounded good and didn't plan on telling anyone about it. Well, actually one person was on the list of knowing about it: Professor Xavier. He had to know since he ran the school, and plus he was a telepath. He was going to figure out sooner or later. Sometimes she wished she could read people's minds, but that would be too much power for her. She liked her own powers just enough. At least she didn't have to fight as much as the others. That was something she was thankful for.

Anyways, today was the day she had been looking forward to. Professor was out on business, whatever that meant, students would be in class, and teachers would be spending their time making sure students wouldn't cheat. No one else would really be wandering the halls on this lovely day. Skylar's biggest worry, Wolverine, was gone again, as usual. It was perfect. So well planned out. As she dangled upside down, a metal panel from Cerebro was missing, exposing the wires. The door had been ordered to stay shut, even in over-ride, but that would take some focus, and she was known for loosing focus when her thoughts were focused on everything else. It was good being a technopath on certain days. She hummed along to some music playing, but their were no speakers or headphones. She had the gift of electronic communication. If their were any electronic signals, she could pick them up, read, listen or see them. That made surfing the internet a whole lot easier. It saved her money too. Well, as the wires were exposed, her hands ran over every single piece. She didn't need to touch the wires to understand it, but she wanted to for this. This was special. A smile broke out on her face the more components she touched. She'd imagine that a few people wouldn't be too happy with what she was doing. It had been about a month since she had first opened up Cerebro out of curiosity. Now she couldn't stop thinking about it. It had taken her a month of figure out where the heart had been located. Everywhere else was empty with the metal panel just serving as an outer covering to the frame.

At a lightning fast pace, her powers made sense of every piece, storing it in case she would ever need it. But the information was how to recreate it. She still didn't have knowledge on how it worked. That would take time, and possibly time was running out. Looking at her watch, it was 2:30. Class had ended. That meant the teachers would be out and about. The fact that she wasn't in class made her a priority to find. At Skylar's waist was the harness that kept her in position. Lowering herself just a few feet, now her head was inside the walls of Cerebro. The items floating around her body were still floating, but now they were by her feet. It had been about an hour since she had lowered herself down, and her head hurt from it. Her face was flushed red. Back to business. As she looked around, a blue and green aura surrounded her. To her surprise, their wasn't as much wiring and whatnot as she thought there would be. Well, it was time for her to leave, but Cerebro wouldn't give her that. As she pulled herself clear of the wall, she used her telekinesis to put the panel back where it belonged. Well only five feet up, something happened. The rope she used to lower herself was somehow caught in the mechanism. It didn't help that she was stuck upside down, and now she couldn't move. Shoot. Stuck. Once move was to call for help, but she was in a place she wasn't supposed to be first of all. Great. Now the only option was to wait for someone to find her, and the best option was a student.

'Cause I'm just a girl, little ol' me...

__The brown hair brushed across the back of her neck as she hurried from the school corridors to one of the many elevators to take her below. Tests were over, school was over, and stress was over as well. For the week anyways. Kitty was brimming with anticipation. The danger room had gotten a few upgrades lately, and she signed up for the next session as soon as she could. Making sure students didn't notice her phase through the wall- some weren't allowed in the base below the school- Kitty soon found herself among the stainless steel and crisp white walls of the school's underground facilities.

__Phasing was simple. It was second nature to the country girl. It became so simple for her in fact, that becoming tangible once more actually took concentration. Kitty laughed to herself, knowing that everything normal to her now seemed impossible in her past. She arrived to a certain section of the corridor that housed the uniform she donned when she became Shadowcat. She attempted to press her fingers to the glass encasing it, but her fingers just phased through. Kitty felt a sigh escape her lips. Phasing was simple. Too simple.

__Of course now of all times her instincts kicked in. Triggering the heightened senses she now had for her own. At first, she thought it was Peter trying unsuccessfully to sneak up behind her. Though she whipped her head around, and no one was there. No, it was a... metallic sound she heard. Like a clanking of something roughly brushing against metal. Adjusting her hearing ever so slightly, what was once a sigh became a gasp. Cerebro. Someone, or something, was inside Cerebro. But who? The Professor was out on 'business' and Jean knew better. Kitty heard her footsteps quicken as she assessed the possibilities. Magneto? No. He'd already tried to take Cerebro, and he did not prevail. Oh god. What if it was Frost? The White Queen had enough power to use it sure, but how would she have gotten past so many of the teachers?

__Kitty gulped before phasing through the thick steel door. She saw no one. Or at least, no one at first. A slight movement caught her eye. A rope? A bungee cord? What in the-? Kitty walked further along the path wide enough for a wheelchair that led to the main machine. Relief rushed through her as she saw the recognizable features, only upside down. "Skylar?" She tried not to laugh, "What the hell are you doing?" Skylar had mentioned her interest in the advanced technology of Cerebro, and when she wasn't in class Kitty should have known. She kneeled towards the edge, concentrating and phasing through enough to be upside down beside her. The red color in her face making Kitty wonder how long she had been hanging there. Her brown hair fell from her face, and she was thankful it was now out of her eyes.

__Again, it was hard not to laugh. Kitty extended a hand out to the poor female, and felt a smirk grow on her face. "Need a hand?" Skylar was lucky that it had been Kitty who had found her, and not one of the teachers. If Monroe knew... well, she tried not to dwell on that possibility. Kitty's face was beginning to get a little red too, sure she had been upside down millions of times, but even with her powers, most of her was human.

__Human. Even the thought of that word hit a nerve. Kitty hadn't regretted being a mutant in years, but surely the memories of days before her X-gene flashed briefly through her mind. Driving across the river to see horse races, having to drive at least five miles to get even close to the nearest town, family... now it was simpler not to laugh. In these mere moments, Kitty had almost forgotten why she was upside down, that her arm was outstretched, that she was with Skylar. The memories returned to the back of her mind, and she returned to the present. "Well? You want up or not?" Kitty had said it before she realized that she hadn't even given her hardly any time to respond. Ugh, she was losing her mind. Perhaps it was delayed stress from school. All of a sudden, she wasn't in the mood for the Danger Room anymore.

__While waiting for her to reply, Kitty studied her face and tried to assume what she had been doing. Skylar hadn't been herself lately. Although no one really acted the same when exams were being taken. But with Sky something seemed off. Kitty had ran into her earlier, and she had hardly said hello. Clearly, something was wrong if she wasn't even able to put up a cheery disposition. Kitty knew she would have to get to the bottom of this. However, first she might want to get them right side up again before all the blood left the rest of her body. Her feet were starting to fall asleep.

Ugh. Well, this was a pickle, and that was an understatement. While hanging upside down from her rope, Skylar tried thinking of ways to get herself back up. This was Mission: Impossible. All she needed was the music and she was set, but she didn't have that type of humor for the moment. The logical move would to use her legs to pull herself up, after spending over an hour upside down, she had no feeling left in her legs whatsoever. Unfortunately for her, she did not have the upper body strength to pull herself up. Great. This wasn't a funny joke. If one of the adults found her, it would be the end of everything. Well, she knew exactly who would find out about this: Telepaths, like Jean and Professor Xavier. If she was lucky, he wouldn't really mind and let her go with this knowledge. If not, it would be blocked from her mind, until she had another urge to check out Cerebro again.

While weighing her options, the tools that had accompanied her on the way down still floated silently next to her. Crap. Skylar's telekinetic powers weren't as developed as she wished, which meant she couldn't push herself up. The most that she could lift was about 70 pounds, and she was around 130. Her long lanky arms were limp as she focused on what to do. Their was nothing she could think of. Wiggling her body around out of frustration, it almost reminded her of worms. When fishing, worms were used as lures to attract fish but when they were on the hook, they wiggled like crazy to no avail. They were going to get eaten. This was no different for her. No matter who found her, it was bad news. "This is some horrible joke that is being played on me but some God that has a horrible sense of humor." It was the first time she had said something while in Cerebro, since it was important that she stay quiet just in case someone was the walk by. Hopefully.

Well, not really. When she had replaced the metal panel, it had apparently made too much noise. In the dead silence of the round room, their was foot steps coming closer. Focusing hard, Skylar order the door to stay close, even if it was the professor, but the foot steps stopped. Were they trying to get in? Well the foot steps came back but this time they were inside the room. Crap!! How did they get into the room when the door was shut. Wait. Kitty. At least they were good friends, and she wouldn't breathe a word of this to the others, right? Well that was what she hoped. "Hey Kitty." It wasn't a happy greeting, but more of an embarrassed one. She was known for getting away with a bunch of things, and to be caught red handed was the worst thing.

As Kitty lowered herself to be eye level, or close, with Skylar, she was still twisting around. This wasn't the best day to be her by far. When Kitty offered her hand to help her up, Skylar didn't say anything. She didn't even move. It wasn't that she was too proud to take it, it was all the stuff that she wasn't doing. You're supposed to tell your friends everything that was going on, but she didn't. Why didn't she? Hell, she didn't know so why ask. It didn't make a difference. Which reminded her. She had a paper that Beast had given her with the official diagnosis. That needed to be destroyed in the best way possible. Burning it seemed to be the most efficient method. Once she got back to the dorms, that would be her first item of business. Right now though, she needed to get out of here.

Looking back up at Kitty, Skylar finally grabbed her hand. "You know I hate phasing through items. I still wonder how you do it without getting nauseated." Breaking out the smiles and laughter, she felt just a little bit better about her predicament. As they both phased through the floor, back on solid ground, Skylar had a head rush from the blood returning back to her feet. Taking the rope harness off her legs and waist, she jumped up, a sharp pain going up through her leg with every step she took. "Oww! My feet are asleep!" It was pretty comical watching her take each step delicately before her body returned to normal. It would be a while before she would try that again. Now to hide the evidence. Walking back over to the rope, she began untying it to pack it away. "I signed up for a time on the Danger Room, which starts in about five minutes. You game?"

                                    [--to danger room]

'Cause I'm just a girl, little ol' me...

__A few moments passed before Skylar took her hand. It was strange, and in those few seconds Kitty wondered what was keeping her. But then she took her hand, and Kitty phased them back to a standing position. The blood rushed back to her feet, and Skylar was cracking jokes and laughing, her usual way to get herself out of trouble... or to avoid something serious. Though for now, Kitty would give her the satisfaction of letting her usual tricks work. And she put on a smile as well. "Lots and lots of Pepto." Now it was her turn to laugh, the pink medicine's theme song running through her head.

__Her feet easily began working properly again. But it was a sad sight to see poor Skylar have to walk so carefully and be in the slightest bit of pain. Well, not so much sad as it was hilarious. Kitty watched her begin to pack up all her tools of crime, and her smile became a smirk. "Hiding the evidence won't keep Professor Xavier and Monroe from finding out you were here." Which was entirely true. She gestured to the one and only security camera in the room, even though she knew it was just for show. She had been in Cerebro plenty of times before, and knew that Professor Xavier would be able to sense Skylar's presence when he returned.

__Either way, Kitty was back in the mood to go to the Danger Room. The more time she was spending with Skylar, the more her mind was getting cluttered. Hopefully virtual simulated combat could fix that. "Sure, I was heading there anyways!" She turned, and walked out of Cerebro via phasing. Leaving Skylar to finish packing up her tools. She stepped out, and looked around the basement. Compared to the upstairs, this part of the building was entirely different. She remembered when she first arrived at the school, and Xavier lured her to Cerebro. He was sitting there, with the large steel door open, just waiting.

__Turning when he was able to hear her footsteps. He seemed kind, almost fatherly, but the Illinois-born girl already had a father. A father she would never have the chance to safely see him again. But Xavier knew that, he knew everything about her. With just one smile he helped her understand her new life, her new home. He led her to the Danger Room, where she watched everyone seem to fight for their lives. At first, she did not know it was an illusion. She saw Peter. Accidentally, she phased through the computer and into the danger itself. Peter caught her. Scott and Logan weren't very happy, but Monroe defended her. It was all so chaotic, and embarrassing, but strangely it made her feel at home.

__Kitty broke out of her little trance, and headed for the suit she donned when she fought with the X-Men. She would meet Skylar in the Danger Room. Her head was starting to throb slightly, and she knew later tonight she would most likely be plagued with yet another headache. The girl groaned under her breath, she hated the headaches. Not just because of the pain and stress they caused, but because she had no idea what caused them. Was it a health problem? Was Frost trying to break into her mind again? Was something else trying to possess her? Ugh, it caused more pain just thinking about that. For a moment she remember when Ogun had possessed her. Ogun. What kind of name is that? Martial arts and samurai expert or not, Ogun never will be a normal name. Kitty let out a deep breath, which seemed to make the rhythmic throbbing lose some pressure. She stopped in front of her suit yet again, and phased it through the glass. The black material resembling how dangerous she could be, and assured her that the headaches were just headaches. With no hidden meaning.
