The very same thought had occurred to Valeriu. No, not the one about the bra, nor about her being able to work.

The twins.

He tightened his grip.

"Perhaps not the best of ideas," he uttered, horrified. The twins - those two, when they saw her? No! No, no, no! Seamus, maybe, would be alright. But Murphy? And Tepin?

No!

He tried to come up with a smooth reason to keep her far, far away from those two hellions, blowing his bangs back again. Maybe he should cut them. "It is okay, you do not need to help," he reassured, "V'ork pays v'ell enough on my own. But maybe..."

He bit his lip hesitantly. This was a big maybe.

"It is a big responsibility, but..."

A huge responsibility!

"But, I v'as thinking, maybe...if you v'ant to, I mean! If you think you can. Help look after Sydni on some days?"

The poor babysitter - he called on her morning, noon, and night. Although he knew she loved taking care of the girls, he also knew she had a life of her own. Plus, it was expensive to have a nearly full-time nanny for Sydni.

And he always worried. Always - that one day, Sydni would see the babysitter as her only caretaker. Because Valeriu wasn't there enough.

Even despite the tight grip that he had on the girl, she managed to spin around, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug.

Good bye Ms. Nanny!

See the proof of my hard work!

And may you never steal my chair again!!

“I want to!” She was bouncing now, the chair beginning to squeak in protest to her excited motions, “I want to! I want to! Really!!”

This was big. This was really big. Being left home alone had been a huge deal--- but being put in charge of keeping Sydni safe? She new that it took a lot of trust for Valeriu to take that huge of a step.

Even if he had been avoiding her, this-- this was a sheer sign that he loved her. And that doubt in his heart, the trust that she had lost from her lies--

All of that was over, if he trusted her enough to put his sole relative, the entire point of his life, in to her hands.

He laughed, ruffling her hair and more than happily hugging back.

"Settle down before you break the chair," he warned, grinning and carefully detaching her, snagging the scissors back. Today was a day for haircuts, he'd decided. A day to move forward!

Before his hair got as long as Writ's.

"Sydni is not that difficult to take care of," he snipped at his own bangs, peering in the mirror and extra careful not to cut his ear (again). "But she can be a handful."

He frowned. Serious face.

"It v'ill be a rigorous training program I v'ill be putting you through! You v'ill learn everything there is to taking care of her. Are you up to the task?"

Taking care of toddlers was no laughing matter. She was in her terrible twos, and no force on earth could be fully ready to deal with that.

The chair twirled, the girl now kneeling backwards on it as her eyes watched the mirror intently.

Even cutting his own hair, he still was a million times better than she was! What the heck? Was there anything that this boy could not do?

“She’s a brat--” She interjected, her face teasing in the mirror. As bratty and malicious as Sydni could be at times, she really wasn’t that bad. It just seemed that she had a particular mean streak for her doting older brother.

“Yes! Sensei!!” Still teasing, she reached towards the sky in a dramatic punch before slumping over the back of the chair, her eyes still taking in his every movement as her lip jutted out. Even as fun as it was to tease Vale, he had a point. Toddlers were serious business.

“I’ll do it,” Her tone became far more serious, watching his reflection in the mirror, “If you really think it’s okay.”

He could see again! Without peering through his bangs, the world suddenly seemed like a much brighter place. Cheerful! Full of hope!

Or not.

But it was nice not to contemplate pushing his hair out of the way with girly hair clips. And Sydni had, on occasion, given him tiny, messy braids. No more, said he. No more.

The only downside to shorter hair was that, naturally spiky as it was, his bangs flipped up like a bad case of bedhead.

"She's a sweet, darling angel," he countered solemnly, setting the scissors down and brushing a hand through his hair to disperse any snipped strands. "A beautiful little angel who is currently possessed by the devil." He sighed. "She used to be so quiet and gentle."

She'd been the perfect baby. But somewhere along the way (probably when the teething started), it had vanished. Vanished, and been replaced with a little she-demon who had a nasty penchant for tugging on his tail and driving him insane.

His eyes dropped down to look back at her in the mirror, before foregoing that and leaning over the chair to tap her nose instead.

"I think you v'ill do fine. If anything does come up, I v'ill make sure either I or the babysitter can run right over. Who knows?" he speculated, leaning back. "Maybe an older sister v'ill help temper her temper. You two can do...girl things." He waved vaguely.

Girl things. Yes. Whatever those were - neither Valeriu nor his father had been privy to what Dana had done with her friends. It was a secret and magical society, he supposed, full of gossip and sparkles and fairies and makeovers.

Things Valeriu wanted no part of. Which was where Tepin came in.

“That’s how we are~” Playfully winking, she couldn’t help but smile at his misfortune, “Soon she’ll be sneaking out and skipping her preschool classes.”

But she couldn’t help but frown poutilly as her nose was tapped! She was far too old for those kind of things, now!

“I can handle it, she calms down a lot when you leave. I think she just likes to tease you.” It was true; while Sydni wanted to harass her poor brother, Tepin wanted nothing more than to make a good impression. “She turns back into an angel the moment you walk out the door.”

Sliding out of the chair, she thoughtfully kicked a few locks of discarded hair from it before wheeling it back towards Vale’s old room.

“And I’ll work hard! We’ll paint our nails and dye our hair together! I’ll make sure she has a boyfriend in no time!”

At least once of us can have one.

Worriedly he hurried after, almost tripping over himself.

"No hair dyeing! And no boyfriends!" he commanded, though it sounded like a disturbed yelp. "That is - that is not proper!"

Sydni? A boyfriend? His head spun in horror at the thought. And hair dye - unnatural! Young ladies shouldn't be coloring their hair! It was pretty as it was.

"How about...reading stories? Playing v'ith dolls? Coloring v'ithin the lines?" he suggested, a tad desperately.

Sydni was already a wild child. What if she started sneaking out at night?

At this rate, he was going to have a heartattack!

“Oh yes! We’re going to start with hot pink streaks, and score her a hot stud~!”

She was cracking up, finally returning the seat to its normal position and flopping onto her (never used) bed. This was great! Her sides were going to split-- it was way too amusing!

“We’ll go watch T.V.! And drink soda! And we’ll stay up ‘till midnight!!”

There was no stopping her laugher; Varu was just too predictable! So strait laced and well trained! It was as if he had never been a kid at all-- he had just popped out fully grown and totally stern. He was a stick in the mud if she had ever met him. Who didn’t watch T.V.? That was just weird!

"No! No, no, no-" he floundered, tail lashing frantically, before he realized she was laughing.

He frowned (pouted).

"You are mean," he grumbled huffily, voice quiet as he tried to rebuild his dignity, crossing his arms sternly (sulkily). "That v'as mean," he emphasized, staring accusingly at her.

Little hellchild! First Sydni, now Tepin! Did all girls grow up to be man-abusers? What happened to his sweet little girlchildren?

He stalked back out to sweep up the hair left on the floor during Cutting Day, tail loftily held high and affronted. Cruel girlchild. After he had taken her in, raised her, bought her little booties!

No respect. No respect at all, he grumbled as he swept up the hair. Little hellions, the lot of them.

Though her giggles took quite a while to subside, his pouty and huffy mood just made her want to burst out laughing again! He was too much! Way too much! It was like he was an old man!

“I’m sorryyyyyyy!!” She called from her place on the bed, letting her voice carry through the open door. “I was a big meanie pants! I’ll make it up to you!”

While she had been speaking, the girl child had snuck off her bed, now peeking from the doorframe to watch her ‘brother’ sulk.

“I do promise that I’ll be good and take care of her.”

His tail had most certainly not poofed up from affront. And he most certainly wasn't hunching his back and stabbing the broom at the stray clumps of hair on the floor. His ears were not laid flat, and he was, without a doubt, not mrr'ing his discontent.

"There's nothing to make up!" he grumped, scowling at the floor and jabbing harder. His tail whipped left, then right, curling and uncurling sulkily.

Devils. He'd been tricked. His father had lied to him. Yes, girls were princesses. Yes, their smiles were a blessing that brightened his day.

But they were Satan.

His ears pricked up, though he was far from being able to not frown at her.

"I don't doubt it," he replied more calmly, relaxing a bit. "You have a good head on your shoulders. I trust you v'ill make good decisions."

Yea, he was a brat. But even still, his trust made her smile. Even sulking like that, he could still compliment her.

“I’ll do her good.” She would. She’d put her all into taking care of that child, who was Varu’s pride and joy. If was almost as that was why she had shown up. By helping Varu, he would have an easier time of making that perfect world for his girls.

She just needed to help out a little bit, and it’d be no problem.

“Hey,” She was pretending to be sneaky, even if she knew there was no way he wouldn’t hear her footfalls. Arms wrapped around his waist in a small hug as she leaned her head against his back. “Thank you.”

He hummed, fur smoothing down and sweeping more contentedly.

"You're v'elcome."

There. There was the sweetness he loved. Unwrapping a palm from the handle, he managed to snake an arm back to ruffle her hair, letting her lean all she wanted. "You v'ill do fine."

Yes. Fine, he told himself, smiling a bit too amusedly.

Sydni would drive her insane. And then who would be laughing? Him.

It was good to be older brother.
