Rumor instantly hushed, shuddering at her mothers touch as she wanted to be released terribly.
THe squirrel, nibbled at something it had picked off the forest floor. It munched away, clearly unaware of the mother and pups. It happily enjoyed its sunshiney day.
But at her mothers words, she sprung, darting towards the squirrel, body low, as if she instinctively knew how to become faster. She had never failed at anything..and she would be damned if she started now.
She pushed harder, her paws thumping against the earth. The squirrel had just turned around, when she was merely inches behind him. His eyes widened and he took off, quick as he could.
He had climbed all the way about a fourth up the tree, when Rumor jumped from her spot on the earth, grabbing hold of his tail, dragging him to the earth.
Holding his tail in her jaws, trying to escape teh snapping jaws of the squirrel, she waited for her mother to catch up.
She had done it! It had been so close.. He had almost gotten away! She knew she was strong. SHe knew she was pretty much close to perfect already.

Piper held her breath, watching her daughter slink off between the bushes, heading for the unsuspecting prey animal. It flicked its tail, not knowing what was upon it. Rumor was off like a bat out of hell! Pip's head jerked up, eyes locked on the squirrel as it tried to make a mad dash up the tree but failed as Rumor jerked it back down. A strange pride filled her and she quickly strutted towards her daughter, a grin upon her face. "Surprisingly good," she murmured, snuffling her muzzle along Rumor's ruff. "You will be a wonderful hunter in time." She didn't want to raise her daughter's hopes too much after all.
Squall was on his feet again, pacing around Mama as Rumor darted away, tail flagging behind her. His own tail was low, his ears flickering back and forth. He didn't see what Rumor was going after. Why was everyone so tense? He gave a small whine, then yipped once as Mama pranced off with a jovial look in her eye. He quickly followed. Rumor held something small and fuzzy in her maw... He wrinkled his nose. "You...caught a squirrel?"

She smiled, knowing that having her mother compliment her even a little was a huge honor, and she stood a bit prouder.
"I caught it momma!" She giggled, looking back down at it and kicking it a bit with her forepaw.
"I worked hard..I wasnt gonna let it get away from me!" She said proudly. She wagged her tail, and looked to her brother.
"Uh huh! I sure did!" She said, to proud to be anything but happy at the moment.

Piper dropped into a bow first, then went all the way down, overseeing both children with her head held high. Her tail whooshed against the dirt for a moment before stilling. "Squall. Your turn. I know you don't know how, but you're gonna try anyway. Pretend that you're sneaking up on Moscow. You need to catch him before he hears you. Be silent, be steady. Start looking."
Squall flicked his ears back hesitantly. "Sounds like a snack," he giggled to himself, backing away from Rumor's kill, knowing that his sister wouldn't hesitate to lay into him. He was, however, taken by surprise when Piper spoke up. Hunt? Him?! But he was just a puppy... He gave an uncertain squirm under her brown gaze and he backed up with a whimper. "But Mama..." She said nothing more and he reserved himself to scanning the ground a little at a time. There was nothing there... No squirrels. No birds. How was he supposed to hunt, anyway? He was young and clumsy! But Rumor did it. He huffed to himself. Rumor could do anything... He padded ahead, looking for the perfect pray.

Rumor smiled, still proud.
"I think you can if ya try, Squall." She said with a smile. She had always favored Squall...But she had never hesitated to pick on him. Ever.
"Just run hard." She wagged her tail, but then her attention was at her prey, for she knew that her brother would not catch what he ran after, but her belly told her she was hungry.

Rumor's words were encouraging to the small pup and he put 100% of everything into scanning the ground, his gray eyes flickering over every bush, ever rock, every pile of dirt. Nothing. Nothing. Nothin--Wait! Ears pricked forwards and he froze, watching as a tiny field mouse scurried along the ground, its tail whipping behind it. Squall shifted his weight, unsure of what to do. Oh if only he'd paid attention to Rumor's chase! He bit his tongue then leaped forwards, his little paws pounding the ground. Somehow in his mad dash, he stumbled over a rock, tumbling head over heels and careening straight towards the mouse, who's mouth hung open in awe at the flying puppy.
His front paws slammed down right in front of the little prey and it squeaked and scrambled away. Squall lay panting, watching it go with a heavy heart. His ears flattened and he growled. Useless mouse...

Piper watched in slight amusement as Squall's run became a tumbling bounce head over heels. She couldn't see what he was chasing, but by the look of it, he'd failed to capture anything. He didn't have Rumor's strut. Instead he was just laying there...
She slowly, deliberately stood up and left Rumor to her meal, padding over to her tiger-striped son and sitting down beside him. "Didn't catch anything?"
Squall scowled. "Of course not, Mama... But I tried..." He gave a whine and flopped onto his side, wiggling his paws at her and showing her his belly.
Piper smiled and reached down, licking his tummy and then his face, turning his frown into a lopsided smile. "That's okay. Next time," she murmured, then hopped to her feet with Squall on his paws as well. "Let's go home." With a flick of her tail, she casually trotted back to Rumor, gave her a nudge, and continued on to the direction of the den.
Not bad. Not bad at all.
