Sovann settled down a little at Okassis' words. Yeah, Kas was right. He was being a little ridiculous. Then when the girl's words sunk in, he realized her error. He couldn't help it. He burst out laughing. "Wait, wait... you thought I was railing against working? No, that's not what I meant at all. It's just that every holder I've met, every holder girl has had some big thing against honest work. They don't like to get their hands dirty when someone else can do the job. All kinds of drudges, and that nonsense." It was all nonsense of course, not that it mattered. "Really, it's not as though I am not used to that kind of thing myself, see?" He held out his hands which were so obviously rough from working that it was laughable to think that he had something against it.

Unruffling a bit, a soft giggle escaped from her lips in almost hysterical relief. "You're wrong though, those are only big Hold girls. I fostered with 'em, I know what kind of girl you mean, but I'm not one. My sisters aren't either. We worked hard, every day, to make sure everything got done around the Cot. I wasn't allowed in the fields, but I could cook, and clean."

Pushing up a sleeve in her own version of show and tell, the freckles stood out starkly against the paleness of her skin, and the rough peeling of an old sunburn. "See? I burn easy, mama wouldn't let me out. She near died when I was Searched. Papa was happy though."

Impulsively taking the hand held out, she dragged the older boy down the hall. All grievances forgiven for the moment, they all but jogged down towards the Lower Caverns. "Ready for a pot of klah that'll wake you up for a year?"

You know, this was the perfect time to let things drop. I mean - perfect. If Okassis had been half the diplomat he was feigning to be (he figured that he could brush off getting hit by a girl if he explained he let her hit him to defuse the situation), he would have. But as he started following after the others, he couldn't help but to muse--

"I dunno. Hold life has always seemed soft to me. Too many dependencies, too many systems that you can't compete against. Hard to make a real man out of that sort of a world. Though it can happen, a'course," he added at the last second, grinning to Sovann. "Just pretty fardling rare."

"You had better be implying that I'm a real man, Okassis... or you are one dead candidate," Sovann joked as he was dragged off. Quickly, he caught hold of Okassis so that the momentum didn't actually separate them all out, and they made a very amusing chain of bodies making for the Lower Caverns. If anyone had happened upon them then, Sovann wasn't sure Kas would've been able to live it down, but fortunately they seemed to be avoiding troublesome company now for the most part. "My folks wanted me to be fishercraft, like them. I wouldn't have any of it, but I've not sat around all my turns either." Raising an eyebrow slightly, he managed a grin. "Sure as shells, girl. Inaari, was it?"

"Yup, I'm Inaari! And as I said, depends on the Hold. Not all of us are rich and able to sit around taking nothing but pleasure all day. And I'd hit you again for talking about my Papa that way, but that's silly. Trust me, when we Impress, I'll show you my Cot. You'll see." Youth brought eagerness, and it didn't seem at all outlandish to think that not only would the three Impress at some point, but they would all be eager to see her home.

"I know a few fishercrafters, doubt any of them are yours. We're by the sea though, lots of fruits on the cot." The chatter navigated the trio safely to her small corner of the Lower Caverns, which was none too neat. "Now just wait here, and look like you're impatient or something, like someone is waiting on you." Rushing off, Inaari's hair streamed around like her own companion. Gathering up the ingredients in her arms, they were quickly separated onto the table.

In almost no time, it was dished out into three separate cups, and pushed into their hands. "Go on, try it! Though if you fall straight onto your back in shock, don't say I didn't warn you!"

Okassis's face wrinkled when Inaari tried explaining why he was wrong - but, being tugged along at the end of the chain, he was too busy hurrying to keep up to go through his list of exactly why Hold living, even in the smaller Holds, was soft. And by the time they'd reached the kitchen, the conversation had changed, and he'd forgotten all about it (too busy whimpering privately over the renewed ache in his ankle, and vowing not to let it show).

Quick enough, he had a steaming cup in his hands - and blanched, staring at it. Had he somehow missed declaring his not-love for klah in front of Inaari yet? He looked up, and saw her watching him eagerly. He glanced at Sovann. The look on his face could have been mistaken for someone who was being sat down in front of a cup of crushed bug legs and told to drink; bravely, though, he took a dainty sip, and purposefully pressed his lips together to let Sovann give his review of the klah. Exactly when Inaari had crossed from a prank target to someone he didn't dare offend, Okassis wasn't sure... maybe it had something to do with the bruise on his gut....

Sovann, who knew Okassis' moods like the back of his hand, was struggling to keep his lips from twitching as he suppressed laughter. Scorch it, he shouldn't be laughing at Kas' misfortune, but oh it was so incredibly hard to contain himself. His lips twitched once more, coming dangerously close to reaching a smile, and he grabbed the mug of klah, taking a long gulp from it after he had blown on it enough to at least shield his virgin tongue from its scalding embrace. He all but choked, the expressions flitting across his face swiftly as he swallowed the fierce brew. "Shards and Shells, girl! Have you no tastebuds? That stuff could burn the tongue off of a wherry!" he exclaimed. He paused and swished some of the remaining klah around in his mouth. "... Not bad, though," he admitted, not wanting to seem too censorious of it. Not after the way she had responded to Okassis earlier. He certainly didn't need anymore bruises just yet.

Looking amused and somewhat perplexed at the same time, Naari looked at them both. Okassis looked like it was all he could do to muscle it down, and the other boy...what was his name..Sovann! Well he had certainly made his opinion known. It was puzzling though. They'd all said her klah was delicious, the perfect thing in the morning.

"It's supposed to do that. The heat and taste wake you up, you can't tell me you want to sleep after a full glass of that!" And that was what was important, wasn't it? Taste was relative. Maybe they had none?

"Well, it's certainly, uhm. Klah-ish," Okassis attempted to compliment her, setting the mug down and forcing a grin. The more he tried to smile to prove he liked it, though, the more painfully slanted his eyebrows grew. It was actually a little hard to believe he wasn't making the face intentionally, come to think of it....

"Of course, it would probably be better with our recipe."

Aaaand there it was.

"It's not that yours is bad, or anything... it's just that I'm used to that recipe, you know." Once again, Sovann picked up the thread of conversation with Okassis as though it had never been dropped. "This might keep me awake for a few hours, but the other kind, well, that'd definitely keep me up all day." To his credit, he did finish the mug of klah, but then he sighed mournfully into the empty cup. He did enjoy a good mug of klah, even though the taste was not to his particular liking. "I'm sure this would go better with breakfast, but we haven't looked into that yet."

If her eyes could roll any harder, they would probably be well on their way out of the Lower Caverns by their own physical power. This was going to be a sticking point, but really, she didn't mind too much. It was, after all, why she offered her help. Subtle attention was being attracted to the small group. Visitors to the young Holder were the rare side of uncommon, and the women seemed to be willing to overlook something minor at the moment.

It was perfect!

"Fine. Teach me! I can learn anything, and if mine isn't so good, we'll see how yours is. Maybe we can even find tasters to volunteer and we can see whose is better!" Pulling a leather thong from her pocket, Inaari bound her long hair back from her face, exposing her tender red skin to prying eyes. However, she took no note of it and put on quite a serious face.

"Hm... all right, you're on, then!" Okassis declared. "First, Sovaan and me will go and get the ingredients and prepare them. Then we'll come back here in an hour, and you'll have the klah ready. We'll get testers to try sips of your regular klah, then our klah, and see which one is better. Right?"

From the grin on his face, it was obvious that he couldn't imagine any way that this situation could go wrong. It was the perfect opportunity!

"What's say we make it a full day so that we can gather up enough people to watch, and participate?" Sovann asked, concealing a sly grin. "That would give us a final say on whose klah was better, don't you think?" And oh, the trouble that they could rustle up in a day's time. It was perfect. Absolutely perfect. "I'm sure you've got work to do, Inaari, so if we do it this way, you can plan ahead of time, and we'll all be prepared. We'll be certain to make the best klah that way." Oh she was going to roast them when she found out! But it would be the most fun he had had in ages.

"Oh of course, it's not like I don't have any other work to do. It's all well and good for a few cups, but I can't just hare off and do whatever I want, by the Egg!" Indignity was spared by the suggestion of a later day, and once again, her feathers were smoothed by a timely injection.

"That's perfect. I can get permission to hold it in the Hall then, we can have everyone seated." There was a slightly wicked light in her eyes. In her mind, even if she was utterly fair, she would still win! Experience over history, that was for sure!

"Now go find us some testers. I have to actually do work!" Turning before they could see her huge grin, Inaari could bare stop from hugging herself with glee. They weren't quite best friends, but still, they were getting there! And it was an improvement over being alone. Maybe after this, she would be noticed. Maybe....
