I thought that the forum might benefit from a bit of a discussion/opinion thread to liven it up a bit. At this point, only the RAW is available of this crossover, though news gets around that it is in the process of being subtitled. For anyone who has seen the RAW... what are your thoughts?

The Detective Conan Translation Project has announced that they will be fansubbing the movie with another group in the future, so I'm waiting for that.

That being said, I'm curious as to how it will turn out. Conan and Lupin are actually very different formats (whoduunits vs. heist), so I'm just hoping that won't try to somehow make it a "It's a Lupin movie! With Conan!" or "It's a Conan movie! With Lupin!". If you know what I'm driving at...

Have you seen it? What were your thoughts? Just put it in white if you are worried about spoilers...Not that I mind any. ^^;;

Good... I visit a forum where one fellow has been talking about having made arrangements with a group to get it subbed as soon as possible - in fact, they are making really good progress. I do believe he's a part of The Detective Conan Translation Project, yeah. smile

Now rattling off my thoughts... (in white razz ) Well, I wrote them elsewhere last weekend, so I hope you don't mind me just copying and pasting my opinion here.

Even though the subtitles will no doubt offer me a better understanding of the plot, some major things obviously won't change with the translation - such as the lack of a highly-anticipated 'clash of wits' 'tween Conan and Lupin, which was what I (and many others, I'm sure) was hoping for. This special also seemed to be much more Conan-centric than Lupin-centric, to me, which makes the title a little misleading... Al in all, I'm kind of glad I approached the crossover with a neutral attitude.

Once again, Goemon has become a useless character - but old news is old. Unless I missed some major scene while viewing all the uploaded parts, which I kind of doubt, his screentime is - dare I say it? - insultingly inadequate, moreso as this crossover was a little longer than the usual special. As I was telling someone, a token action sequence just doesn't cut it for me (no pun intended). It's true - the writers in general don't seem to have much in the ways of ideas for what to do with him, so he is reduced to serving as a plot device, or comic relief, at best, when I personally think there's a lot more to him (and I don't think it's *just* the roleplayer in me talking). His role, or lack thereof in this crossover honestly made me wonder if his voice actor, Inoue Makio, is facing a Naya Goro-esque situation. : x No one can do a kiai quite like Makio... but, I digress.

I think I'd be a little happier if the gang were assembled right from the beginning of a special, like episodes of old, so there would no room to have Goemon take fifty minutes of riding on some mule to get to where he needs to be. Also... a throwback to episodes is always good... heck, maybe if they were together from the start, they could go about stealing something that has nothing to do with saving the world/stopping some villain who is seeking world domination. They're thieves, after all... It's actually possible to forget that these days, sometimes.

To reply (also in white):

It would be difficult to please both sets of fans for a movie like this, since they are both very popular characters.
If Lupin did go right up against Conan, there would have probably been some kind of comparison between him and Conan's own Lupin-esque character, Kaitou Kid. Though to have no showdown at all seems to be defeating the purpose of the actual title of the movie...

Goemon has suffered alot in the recent specials. Odd that the Japanese character in the Japanese anime seems to have nothing to do. They can't think of anything? At all?

Or maybe it's that they sometimes think of too much. In the manga and early episodes, the gang was together because they were together. They didn't need to all have their own plot device to tie into the story. Being together was a given. It didn't take much to think about.

Most of the recent specials all suffer the same problems of taking 40 minutes to get everyone together and then save the world. If they could once again just do a straight-up heist film, it would be so nice. No magic diamonds, no maniacal dictators, please no Neo-Nazis. Just steal something from a crazy rich guy. Or another bad guy (but no mafia, please! That's been done to death as well.) Just something with explosions and an ending that is clever but slightly far fetched. That is what I want.

Replied.

"It would be difficult to please both sets of fans for a movie like this, since they are both very popular characters." This is ultimately true.

"Goemon has suffered alot in the recent specials. Odd that the Japanese character in the Japanese anime seems to have nothing to do. They can't think of anything? At all?"

Not entirely odd, as being loosely based on those Maurice Leblanc novels, the Lupin franchise has a distinctly European flavour. 'Mon, of course, was never the main focus of the show or the manga - he strikes me as something obviously thrown in - and his nature's definitely quite different from Lupin's free-spirited craziness that defines the show, as you are well aware. And seeing how grim and sombrely he has been portrayed these days, I'm not surprised that he doesn't have much of a place anymore.

I miss the Red Jacket days when he as well as Jigen were 'looser' and had more of those humorous moments... Heck, I'm not getting any of those fraternal-bond vibes from the gang anymore. :/

"Or maybe it's that they sometimes think of too much. In the manga and early episodes, the gang was together because they were together. They didn't need to all have their own plot device to tie into the story. Being together was a given. It didn't take much to think about."

Simplicity is underrated. Considering the time-constraints with an episode, also not a bad idea to have them all together from the get-go. And that did also contribute to the closeness they shared, reminding us that their ties were beyond the professional sphere.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Many people agree with you. Also, it'd be nice if Lupin ended up keeping the treasure he stole, too. 8<

I haven't seen it and I'm not sure if I will, but crossovers should be left to fanfiction and comics. I know that when Nani first mentioned this movie I was against it and slightly disgusted by the idea. I had hoped it was a joke, but it was not to be. And I really enjoy both shows, but putting them together just seems too... I don't know... wrong? If it was a comic I'd read it. Otherwise I just might have to pass.

I think that for every future special everyone should have random girlfriends who end up betraying them. Fujiko should have one, too. That way the characters would have some sort of story even though that story would be completely useless and lame. And then at the end, after a way too long fight with terrorists over the last chimichanga, they save the world. Yay! =D
