Well like it was said before, there is no "best" job to have in a pt. I'd have to say at higher level a Brd/Whm is a really awesome person to have in the pt's, even though no higher level Raises you don't need it if you pulling don't Chain 4-5's (You can make it back in a jiff) (Course at like 60-75 a Raise 3 would be REAL nice XP)
Aside from the healer a tank is always needed. War/Nin can be a pretty good tank, but Nin/War is my favorite choice for tank. After the tank what needs to be in a party is a DD. SAM/DRK/DRG for physical dammage, or a BLM for magic damage. A DD always speeds up the pt, I don't think anyone will argue.
(I'm in a static on my server and it's really good. We have a Brd/Whm, Whm/Blm, Nin/War, War/Nin, Sam/War (Me), and a Thf/Nin. Once our Brd hits level 50 our Whm has talked about switching over to Blm, but we like the way things are now. Anyway, end post now ^^)

i agree with whoever said there is no BEST job for a pt. you need the right combo of jobs. thf sucks at low lvls, but once you get SATA, it owns, but only if you have soemone for it to TA off of. BRD and RDM are absolutely required in a pt after lvl 41 on Lakshmi server, because you need to have refesh. no one partys without one or both of those jobs. BLM is powerful as hell, so you could always benefit from them in your pt. Someone who can raise, someone who can tank... yes please to all of the above lol. all the jobs are good, if you learn how to play them correctly. I cant wait for the Blue Mage job to be introduced this coming summer.

Hmmmm well there is no best thing in a party really.... i mean everything is a necessity.. cept BST...>.>..... but they can solo... lucky them..>.> but ill say black mage and red mage.

I will like to share my exp with my party last night, we were a 68'69 party experience in bibiki bay. We couldnt find any rdm or brd and we still decided to go uin adventure, tough lots of the party memebers were reluctant about getting good exp without mp refresher.
To our surprise we even got EXP CHAIN 5 and without a single mp refresher al we had was
WHM/SMN
BLM/WHM (without black cloack i leveled after 6k in that party and finally got it)
SMN/WHM
PLD/WAR
DRG/WAR
THF/NIN
wheeling trust> SATA SHARK BITE> MB LIGHT THUNDER 3 AERO 4 (GARUDA) AND BANISH OR HOLY WHM
We owned those dhamels.
So far this has been my best party setup ever, que anhilited evrything in the area and had to wait for pops o.O and I was very amazed myself, I had to go and got them a rdm dunno what happened after I left . but believe me, that was THE PARTY

THF > NIN > BRD > RDM > SMN > WAR/SAM/DRK/MNK
that is the best pt setup
#1 no downtime for MP regen razz
#2 MAssive dmg on Skill chain
#3 THF for Awesome Hate Control since patch against Utsusemi
#4 SMN provides crap loads of MP for healing and Avatars for MB surprised

There is no answer to this question. Many people say tank, but it matters. There are Melee parties with a BRD/WHM who lands 2-3 cures a fight because of a GREAT ninja tank. There are manaburns which don't need an official tank to begin with. Each job can be countered with an alternative, which is the beauty of FFXI. (The exception being a BST which shouldn't be in a regular EXP party anyway.)
