Ok, here's what's up:

I play cello and I've been renting one for about three years from a store called Music and Arts. Well, I don't practice all that much so my mom wants to turn it in and use the credit to outright buy me a different instrument. I have about $1100 in credit and some of my own money I may be willing to use to buy something. I also play bass guitar/double-bass. I own a keyboard, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica and trumpet*That is a piece of poop*. I Really, REALLY want to learn tuba/sousaphone but I know I don't have enough money to get one of those. However, there is a sousaphone that may be under $500 on_line.

I wouldn't mind learning any instrument so, what do you suggest I do? Any instruments I should get?

I would say go for the tuba/sousaphone, but yeah if you don't have the money you don't have the money. I don't know much about sousaphones, but I don't think I'd trust a $500 one myself.

If you want a new recommendation, I recommend the saxophone. It's a fun and easy to pick up instrument, and I'm sure you could buy a decent alto with the money you have.

no offense to the people who are selling this but a sousaphone under 500 dollars sounds like a piece of junk. If you really really wanna play it, at least test it out before hand. If I were you I'd save your money cause you can't get really anything good with 1,100 credits.

Sousaphones are pretty expensive.... So I think it'd be hard to find one that's that cheap. Same with Tubas. It's rare to find a Tuba that's a couple hundred dollars, unless it's a fixer upper.

I love playing the Tuba. Very fun. whee

That's the thing I'm most afraid of, buying one that's junk. My friend said that sax is one of the easiest instruments to learn and that it's really fun. I just don't know...

So my friend said Saxophone which I'm really interested in now. She said start with alto because it's easier. Any thoughts?

I would just say that if you're learning saxophone, don't forget to control your volume. I've heard that it's tempting to blare it out.

Yeah, I learned (well as much as I could given the condition of the instrument itself.) saxophone on the alto.

It's less big than the others, so that would probably make it easier.

I've barely got to play any of the others at all, so I don't have much experience, I just know that alto is really fun.

I say try out trumpet or French Horn.
Trumpet isn't hard after you learn the basics, then all you have to do is make your range incredible.
French horn, I don't play it, but I want to. It's apparently the most challenging instrument to start playing, because of the difference in fingerings, and the mouthpiece size, and the tonality.
But it seems fun.

Ok, So I have an alto sax and he's so pretty!

But I'm not really sure what to do. I've made sounds but I don't want to take classes. I
m going to talk to my friend who plays sax tomorrow but do you have any other tips for getting started?

don't be fooled by the reedness, the enbechour for the sax is diff from the clarinet? (dunno if this is a good tip xD) tightness on the sides of your mouth rather than the lips is key...

the mouthpeice should be farther in your mouth than what most beginners do as well, apparently. from where the reed starts to part away from the mouthpeice to the tip should be in your mouth. (really all the problems I'm having are with the mouthpeice, so I'm telling you what my BD has been telling me for the past week)

hmn... OH! when you put your reed on the mouthpiece, you should be able to see a line of the mouth peice behind the reed, and when you look at it from the other side, you should be able to see a line of the reed over the mouthpeice... xD it's an optical illusion that's great for knowing you've gotten set up properly.

Hmm, I'll make sure to look at that next time I set him up. I've never played clarinet so I wouldn't have anything to bass the Enb. on. But this all helps a lot. Thanks so much!
