Just say, "I'd like to play French horn, and I just won't play it during class." or "May I please march mellophone?"

I switched from the clarinet to the bass clari just by seeing one of my band mates play it. My band director told me i should try it and i said sure why not?? I think you should say "Hey, Mr (his name) The french horn looks intresting. I've taken a look at its notes and stuff, could I possibly try it out..?"

you could send him an email or talk to him and say "i absolutely love trumpet, but to have a full mastery of the most instruments i would really like to start playing french horn also." and make it sound all professional, but the main thing is to make sure that he knows you really want to play both

wnnabet13 you could send him an email or talk to him and say "i absolutely love trumpet, but to have a full mastery of the most instruments i would really like to start playing french horn also." and make it sound all professional, but the main thing is to make sure that he knows you really want to play both exactly just tell your band director that you are interested in furthuring your talents in the brass section of your band and would like to try the french horn out, most of the time unless there is an over abundance of that particualr insturment in your band they usually have no problem with saying yes or giving you a try, look on the bright side the worst your band director could do is tell you no thank you, go for it, if you really have the passion for it you should give it your all!

I was in your same spot last year! What I ended up doing was playing horn in concert band and trumpet in jazz band. I must say in my case playing horn dropped my trumpet range a bit, but I admit I *was* neglecting the ol' trumpet stressed
On a side note, I did actually send my director an e-mail. The situtation was we had 6 trumpets and 1 horn, thus elfie got switched over. Sadly, the tide has turned and this year there weren't enough trumpets. Elfie no longer plays horn... cry
Horns rock.
