January 109

Clear skies today, though outwardly a calm smile graced her features, inwardly the private was bursting with joy. Rainingwind, look, we're almost there. Jamie fell into her quirk of being more inclined to mention the obvious to her bonded when she was excited.

At times the wolf wondered if this same delicate and cheerful voice belonged to the same rider that syncs with his movements with elegant intimidation and the purpose of facing the centipede threat written on her bearing. The confidence she exudes was his assurance. Rainingwind reacted as usual to the ecstatic human on his back looking forward to seeing her adoptive brother, with silence as he ran with swift ease toward their destination.

Within minutes they had reached the Academy, the wolf easing to a stop and Jamie then sliding down to land softly on her feet upon the snow-covered earth. We're here. Though still poised, the intimidation from her carriage as she rode her bonded had now concealed itself. Eyes glittering with happiness, the visual differences between wolf and rider became more apparent once again as Rainingwind's battle-ready carriage remained constant.

Jamie's eyes searched for Keiran and took in the area of the Academy around her, wondering if her younger, adoptive brother happened to be close by. Eagerness creeping out of her composed form, she began taking subconscious steps forward in her search.

Rainingwind's ears flicked and eyes scanned alertly as he too kept with the practice of maintaining awareness of one's surroundings. He walked two steps behind Jamie. Despite his bearing, the wolf was also visiting Keiran, another human with whom he felt kind vigilance.

Today had been a strangely unfulfilling day, and Keiran was simply bursting with bridled energy that threatened to escape at any moment. To most this seemed to be a common and even natural occurence for the boy, but it was different from his usual enthusiasm. Something seemed to have been ignited within his mind and the tickling sensation of a familiarity just over the horizon only served to drive the boy further to the edge of his sanity.

Skipping along the academy halls, Keiran hummed a strange tune to himself, smiling giddily as he looked over the columns and walls. The presence of the other recruits seemed to escape his attention as he barreled down his own path, failing to realize that several people had to dive out of his way to avoid an impact. Lost in his own world, the blonde was still trying to piece together the unknown puzzle in his head. Something was itching in the back of his mind, but he didn't know what it was.

Coming to a sudden halt in the middle of hallway, Keiran frowned as he looked out a frosted window. It was cold out, but that had never bothered him before, and he was starting to feel rather stuffed up inside the academy. So he pivoted on his heels and headed straight for the main entrance, nearly running over another couple of recruits. But he was on a mission... what that mission was, he would soon find out. Hopefully.

Stepping outside, he watched his feet crunch into the white snow with amusement, giggling softly to himself. The cold air touched his warm cheeks and he shivered at the coolness. Keiran looked up at the sky, so bright and blue, and started twirling around in a circle. But of course, he got dizzy after awhile and ended up falling on his bottom. That mattered to him not as he laughed happily to himself, glancing around out of habit.

That was when he spotted two familiar figures across the field. A wide grin spread across Keiran's features as he instantly jumped to his feet and sprinted full speed towards the approaching pair with arms outstretched. "JAMIIEEEEEEEEEEE!!!"

[OoC: Feel free to assume Keiran jumps into Jamie's arms for a hug once he reachers her. XD]

[OoC: Okay~ ^w^-]

Rainingwind felt Jamie's happiness as though flow over the brim inside when they caught sight of Keiran. They watched the recruit. The semblance between the male and female humans did not escape him, recalling Jamie's recent gleeful twirl beneath the light snowfall at dawn as they were distancing themselves from their barracks for training.

Jamie's eyes shone with fondness as she watched Keiran. Rainingwind caught her movement as she slightly stepped forward more quickly with the purpose of wanting to catch him though still a ways away while inwardly noting he'll be alright, and the soft sound of her giggling lightly as well in gladness to see her little brother's laughter was captured by his ears in his alertness. They were her softest expressions that she rarely let slip when she wasn't alone he noted as he felt an abrupt change in her as intent on steadiness heightened in her mind in sudden reminder. He was reading so many things from her but in his peripheral vision, she had been able to keep these shifts small. When Keiran looked their way, the wolf easily matched the visual intake with the sudden change in Jamie's mind, she was reminding herself about being strong. Since the aftermath of the last season of battle, the steadiness accompanying her delicate features had become more appreciable in her bearing.

Almost in time with her brother, the private ran joyously toward him as well, training having lead to further aiding her body to instinctively prepare for a certain and well-executed cushioning hug. Footwork and balance coordinated elegantly, Jamie tenderly enclosed Keiran in her arms, in a hug that could be described as neither too long nor brief, a hug that she filled with gentle warmth. She recalled their sibling group hugs, missing them and feeling the pain from a visiting memory before relieving it and seeing to it not being seen on her features as she faced Keiran.

Cold as he appeared to Jamie and everyone for that matter, Rainingwind had character not easily apparent in his conduct. The memory, Rainingwind remembered that time clearly, keeping himself hidden since Jamie didn't want to trouble him. Though he had seen her deepest memories of her childhood tears at the deaths of her loved ones, he was still very saddened at what he had witnessed. He didn't expect he would feel so much pain watching his rider cry before her adoptive sister's grave, familiar with the fact that she hadn't cried like this since her mother's death, seeing how she hadn't changed at the core but as though a bud that bloomed into a rose, the memory of seeing into her mind then and finding she was always like this, pouring her heart into her tears and staying true to her aim to press on positively glowing with purpose. It would appear all the sorrow left her as she had not cried again after that one time and would seem she was unfamiliar with sorrows as she keeps hers secret so well.

Delight in her eyes, her voice with a sweet steadiness and cheerfulness as he said her brother's name and words, "Keiran, I'm so happy to see you. I made this for you." Rainingwind had reached them, now halting his walk, and gave a curt dip of his head in greeting to Keiran as Jamie was in the process of producing an item from the bag strapped to the harness. "It's a doll of Rainingwind," Jamie extended her arms toward Keiran, offering him the six-inch plush she'd sewn for him on breaks in her hands.

Keiran fell into his sister's familiar embrace with relief, the restless nagging that had been pressuring the back of his head finally resided as he found himself in the warm arms of Jamie. His happiness at their reunion matched hers, brimming with unbridled joy that forced tears to well up in his eyes as the memories of his carefree childhood bubbled into the present. He could recall the last time he had been hugged so lovingly, and he could also remember that Ylora had been there that time. The fact that Ylora had passed had depressed him for the last month, but encouraging letters from Jamie had rekindled his spirit. Now he clung to her dearly, for Jamie was as close to him as his blood sister had been, and despite her greater age, she had always been like a mother to him. She was his support that never wavered, and he greatly admired her steady composure - in her arms, he felt as if nothing could ever be wrong in his world. Keiran felt at home.

As Jamie pulled away, Keiran stared at her with one of his wide happy grins, but this one was special as it lit up his entire face and sparkled deep in his eyes - a smile reserved only for her. And when she pulled out a gift for him, he squealed with childish delight and reached forth to take the plush in his hands. He handled the toy with delicate care, turning it over as he scrutinized every loving stitch and running his fingers over the soft fabric that promised comfort. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I love it!!! I love you!!!" he exclaimed as he jumped forward to throw his arms around Jamie's waist in gratitude. The plush would soon become his new security blanket, but he would treasure the gift, always.

Releasing his sister, Keiran looked over to Rainingwind and tried to look as composed as possible - he knew that Jamie's wolf was quite the serious one, so he tried to act appropriately in front of the canine. But that didn't mean he was going to contain his excitement. "Doesn't this look exactly like Mini-You?" his voice came out in a rush of joy, eyes still shining brightly as he looked directly at the dark wolf while holding out the plush for Rainingwind to examine. The wide grin never left his face. "I think I'll name him Miniwind!"

Refine with youthful energy described her smiles. Specially for Keiran was a tenderness that shone in her eyes. When he hugged her again and she hugged him back securely and affectionately, her smile was wide and joyful as she sweetly told her dear little brother, "I love you, Keiran, very much." Her smile remained as she watched him approach Rainingwind.

The shine in Keiran's eyes reminded the wolf of the time Jamie decided she wanted to play charades with him. Times with Jamie were the oddest in his life. This memory in particular was of when she was excited upon having come upon an idea for him. As though holding a stick in each hand, she stood before him in thought as she tried to visualize how the items he now wore would have looked on him then. If he had no mental connection with her, he might have wondered what possessed her to run into the den and initiate the strange staring contest with him out of the blue. Might have.., but then again he wasn't usually one to wonder such things..usually.. Though with Jamie, he had come to know that many (strange) things were possible..

Then, to his not-so-evident-as-usual surprise, even with him foreshadowing it before her saying so with his telepathic capability with her, she brought up the guessing game. And he had then decided to humor her.. It was remarkable how she radiated with innocence. It was hilarious. He was incredibly amused. And just as he wondered times before, he wondered again how he managed to bond with her. When asked what he thought she had in mind of getting him, he replied in like manner to other of his replies. He told her he guessed she had in mind an alien and in turn she had agreed enthusiastically that it had been indeed a plausible and brilliant guess and idea. And the memory went on..consisting of her thinking over how an alien costume would look for several moments before remembering where they were in their activity before the tangent..and somewhere along the way him being thought of as a warrior butterfly.. And then led to now..nonchalant-seeming acceptance followed by..warrior butterfly. Affectionately (in terms of Rainingwind and his cold ways), it seems to him that nothing could get to him now as the worst(s) had already passed and that he had been driven to composed insanity.

His ears flicked foward as he listened to Keiran intently, bearing the constant unchanged as in this day and that memory. He dipped his head as a yes to the younger sibling. Before him stood two siblings in the face of the recent passing of their sibling, his thoughts proceeded. Interacting with the two before him and from what he'd witnessed in his six years, he'd come to know of humans caring and mourning for humans, wolves caring and mourning for wolves, and also of individuals, their species be either of the two: wolf or human, caring and mourning for individuals of the other of the two, different from their species. From such gathered experiences is how his strength in his devotion to their defenders' alliance has been further strengthened.

It was a wonderful feeling for Jamie, watching her brother and wolf before her. She looked around brightly, searching. Turning to her two companions she inquired with her astonishing combination of steady liveliness and gentle calm, "Keiran, Rainingwind, do you two want to find a way up to the roof?"

Keiran giggled as Rainingwind nodded - he always thought it was so cute when wolves betrayed any human traits since he had thought they would act more like dogs. Though the last time he had mentioned that to Ylora, she had told him that wolves hated to be compared to their lesser relatives, so he had been extra careful not to do so.

Despite wanting to run up and embrace Rainingwind, Keiran knew the wolf wouldn't be very pleased with the act. Riverdance had always been a far more sociable wolf and had even romped with him once in awhile, but he'd always thought Rainingwind was the more sophisticated and seemingly stronger of his sisters' wolves. Riverdance was his favorite to play with since she had actually let him, but he had always held a silent admiration from Rainingwind. As was betrayed by his awed look at the black wolf now, before he giggled again and snugged the plush close to his chest.

"The roof?" he echoed as he glanced up past the second floor of the academy building, holding one hand up to shade his eyes from the dim sunlight. Keiran's eyes widened as he realized how tall the building was - he had never climbed that far before. Looking back at Jamie, he tilted his head curiously. "Can you get up there? I don't think I've ever seen anyone up there."

Looking around, Keiran tried to find a good place for them to sit and talk, or maybe play a game of tag! Today was Sunday, so that meant no traininig. Maybe they could play in the training field and Jamie could show him some of her cool tricks. "How about we go to one of the obstacle courses? I've been having trouble with the rope climbing," he admitted with a sheepish grin.

Jamie wondered briefly, without any change in her expression as she too looked up to where Keiran had, of hearing about Drill Sergeant Black pushing recruits off the roof though when she heard Keiran’s statement she replied with bright eyes and a smile, “An obstacle course; that’s a great idea. We can work on the rope climb together.”

The wolf approached his rider with a few steps before heading behind Keiran. I’ll take you both there, Rainingwind replied in the usual, coolness not excluded from his expressions of affection.

“Then by unanimous vote, we’re headed to the obstacle course,” then with a light, cheerful chuckle, Jamie swiftly mounted her wolf before addressing her little brother, “Brace yourself, Keiran.”

In a fluid motion, Rainingwind had crouched and slid the recruit onto his back so that Jamie rode behind her brother. The items he wore, particularly in this case the headdress, were flexible and took into account the possible situations that could be faced and thus were fashioned not to be impediments, thus moving with the wolf’s movements nearly as though not present and also aided with his practice.

Jamie made sure to keep vigilant so as to help Keiran and keep him from falling as they moved forward. “Hold on to the harness, Keiran,” Jamie advised him, voice kind and steady as she moved her arms from where she held him securely with an arm holding onto his torso and the other on the harness to having both arms holding onto Keiran.

“You can extend your arm to signal a movement in that direction to Rainingwind, if you’d like to give it a try; like this,” Jamie held up a practiced straight right arm with her thumb, index and middle fingers together to her right side, reacted to with several forward right steps by the wolf, “Rainingwind has practiced sensing apart from sight this way.” Then after listening to her bonded’s words, she added, “Also, he says you can try navigating, so you can tell him which way to go.”

Keiran was absolutely thrilled when Jamie agreed to work on the rope climbing with him. As much as he loved Ylora, she wasn't as efficient or skilled at training as Jamie. Ylora had been good, but her skill was average and Keiran personally believed that Jamie was more naturally talented as much as he practiced. So to her help him out was more than he could've asked for.

"Thank you!" he said, grinning widely at both Jamie and Rainingwind when she informed him that the wolf would be coming too. But what happened next was not expected - he had no idea what his sister meant by 'brace yourself' until he found the wolf pushing his large head between his legs.

With an excited squeal, Keiran was about to fall off from the thrill of sitting on the black wolf. He had been on Riverdance several times before, but never Rainingwind - he was always afraid of the wolf's aloof attitude and that the wolf wouldn't appreciate any but Jamie to ride him. But having been allowed the ride from Rainingwind, Keiran was honored. He ran his fingers lightly through the fur. "Oh, you're so soft! Jamie must wash and brush you all the time!"

Turning his head slightly so that he could hear Jamie, Keiran nodded at her instructions, wanting to please her as much as knowing this was for his safety. He grabbed onto the harness as she had, then looked as she continued to give directions. He held up his arms to point straight to the right, trying to imitate her actions directly.

"I'll try not to get lost," Keiran told them with a giggle, though he was impressed by everything Jamie and Rainingwind knew how to do together. Would he be this in tune with his wolf? Thinking, Keiran pointed straight ahead, with his three fingers together as his sister had shown. But he wasn't sure if Rainingwind could see above his head, so Keiran added, "Go forward."

Despite not being touched by others aside from his rider often, the wolf’s cold demeanor was unaffected. However, despite his coolness kept, he recognized the warmth in Keiran’s touch, finding again similarity between the brother and his bonded. Suddenly, Rainingwind found himself missing Firespark. It was at the mention of Keiran’s words that the memory surfaced. He recalled the occasion when Rome and Jamie washed and brushed Firespark and him together one day. It was a laughable and joyful memory. Years of such feelings also have become untraceable in his demeanor as the wolf reacted to navigation signals accordingly as he safe-kept the memory back again.

Rainingwind’s ears flicked to receive Keiran’s signal and in time with the cue increased his pace appreciably in that direction. The wolf noted the movements of the two, noting shifts in motions to match verbal signals given.

Jamie felt a nostalgic feeling visit her and realized it was connected to her bonded. It had come and then gone with the wolf’s quick mental shift back and her expression too showed no indication of the realization.

Jamie observed her brother and his demeanor and found he had the potential of a promising and admirable recruit since he was young as her watching him now furthered this belief that she had found true. He interacted well with Riverdance and Rainingwind, not agitating or disrespectful in behavior toward the wolves. She gave a nod of her head and gave a light, cheerful chuckle as well when she heard her brother’s words and giggle and got an idea. With a wink she moved to pull her blindfold from the bag at the harness, an optimistic and fiery gleam in her eyes that contrasted yet complemented her composure as she told her brother in a tone of the three characteristics mixed, “Show me what you can do.” She felt, with her many days of training together, the change of the feel of her bonded’s muscles as one factor of indication of his prepping for the small increase of his pace.

Then, after feeling his muscles shift with his pace and observing the prediction of increase in pace come to pass as the speed increase was also felt in the air current surrounding them, and then tying the blindfold over her eyes, she dismounted her bonded in a fluid, non-impeding motion and fell into stride with the wolf. Eyes unseen now with her composed bearing, her tone was the same, “I’ll move together with you and Rainingwind according to sensing focused on sound and the feel of the atmosphere. This helps improve how I can match with my bonded in that it increases familiarity and also I can combine these two enhanced senses with sight again later. Keiran, I ask you, what are examples of sensing with sound and noting the feel of the surroundings?” Jamie decided to create for her brother a scenario to test his upkeep of actions: navigating and further communicating strategically.

Rainingwind shared Jamie’s thoughts, finding Keiran an example to be followed, noting his receptiveness to taking in drills as the technique of his motions were felt similar as demonstrated and found Keiran’s bearing more competent in comparison to a number of encounters with apprentices at the fort. He learned over the years that solidifying basics and constructive lessons preceded expansion from such a foundation and saw Keiran as capable in this light.
