A common opinion is that if you yourself worship or have worshiped something it becomes an idol. An example is on the diamond district in Manhattan many Chassidim sell necklaces with crosses, some with a "jesus" attached. However, you can always ask a rabbi if you live near one.

My whole life before our conversion, my family had been moving towards being Jewish, for as long as I can remember we had been going to a Chabad Shul and I had never believed anything except for Hashem.

(And I have never heard about that happening.....)

If its the thing about the diamond district my wife worked for one of the gold distributors for awhile.

Yes it is the part with the dimond things......


Note: trees, rivers and any other landmarks must be looked at with caution. It is shown that there were no trees in the Temple courtyard because trees were worshiped by some at that time. Other natural objects may also be considered to have been turned into an idol.
Also, they say that one reason Moshe's grave was hidden was so that none would wind up building an idol on purpose on that location.
