For your scales, you are going to start on different notes from any other instrument since your instrument is in the key of F. For a C major scale, you will start on G, for Eb major you will start on Bb, and so forth. For exercises, play each note of your scale for 8 counts at 60-80 BPM (preferably with the aid of a metronome or similar), repeat that three to five times as your lungs allow and then take a short break, not more than two minutes, and go again. You need consistent lung power to play the instrument and that will help you develop it. When you can handle that, try changing dynamic levels to either piano or forte levels or alternate to varying degrees of volume within the scale. The horn is a powerful instrument but it is very labor intensive.
From the previous posts, it seems you have a single horn, which is what I use and own as well. I do not like to play double horns in the least and I insisted that I used my single horn when I was in high school band. Using a single horn is easier, but it will limit your range in the upper register of the instrument, and extending the register is primarily what a double horn is for. Since you're new to it, you won't be venturing there often anyway so it doesn't matter. Besides, if you can build your range on a single horn, and hit the higher notes on it, your range will be that much further on a double.
Also, though this is usually annoying to other people, buzz on your mouthpiece when you can. Waiting on something? Buzz on your mouthpiece. Bored? Buzz on your mouthpiece. In the shower and don't feel like singing? Buzz on your mouthpiece. You will be surprised at how much it helps you overall, if you do it for an hour or so a day.
