Your life.

I have no job, and well, I have LOTS of spare time on my little hands. And as they say, idle hands are the devils playground.

Anyways, what I'm wondering is, how do you guys organize the material items of your past? Old doodles, homework, knick knacks, post cards from travels.

I currently have two smaller boxes and one big box crammed full of crap from my past. This is stuff I still want to keep. Souvenirs from travels, things friends have given me. Stuff that I don't want cluttering up my house on shelfs (because I'm a**l and because I'm selling the house.)

So, do you scrap book? Throw stuff out? Pile it in a big box and don't care? Sort by year or event? I need ideas before I start messing around.

I really only keep items that have a strong sentimental value (or i just really like). They're currently all in a large foot locker. I have another locker that's full of camping/hiking gear. Both are in my closet. Shelves and boxes full of books (it's the only thing I really hoard)

And i use filing folders for important papers and stuff like drawings. THey're easier to toss around when I move than a huge filing cabinet.

I don't really keep much. Stuff will hang around for a while an eventually get thrown out or given away.

If the items are small souvenirs you could find boxes that are used to store pictures (they tend to be narrow and small) and you could sort stuff into boxes by year or location.

Right now my things are in bins around the apt. I went through a HUGE purge when we moved to NY. I used to keep everything, but when I moved, I realized the stuff that I never look at took up too much space in our small apartment. I kept things that were very important to me and vowed to be more strict on what I buy.

I plan on getting really organized when we get a house. Like separate things into smaller easier to handle bins.

This book is pretty good and helpful. It's All Too Much .

I dont have a job either ;_;

And i dont keep a lot of stuff from the past, its all just material to me.

And for me, when i go through things i ask: Do i love it? Do i need it? Does it make me money?

And i keep it based on that.
For the FEW cards and stuff, i keep scrapbooks.

For books i organize by paperback or hardback, then height.

For DVDs i organize by genre.

For CDs i organize by bands, like i have 7 Marilyn Manson cds, that goes first. Then bands with 6 cds, 5 cds, etc.

Magazines i keep are by date received.

Well, yesterday I wrote on my little to do list that I was going to organize one box o' stuff. I ended up doing all three. Took me about five hours, but I'm very pleased with myself.

I ended up with a lot in the "give away pile" and a lot of paper to be recycled. (I finally threw out my unsent letters to an old boyfriend. eek )

I feel a lot better now. OH! And I also found the pump for my yoga ball. Total win. Anyways, I feel much better now. I always had, in the back of my head, a nagging that this is something I have to do. Eventually. Well, no more!

My problem is that I keep lots of weird things. All which I have an attachment to.

I have a whole box of Kinder Surprise items with other random items I've literally picked up off the street. >_> And I have some books that are more special to me then bookshelf books, and cards, letters, souvenirs, postcards, business cards and pamphlets that I feel that I need to box away instead of filing in with my boyfriends stuff.

Anyways, it's all complete now. :3 Until we move and I find another box of junk that needs to be sorted through.

Most random item kept: A half used bath bomb. Seriously. It's like five years old.

Mom gave me a memory box and in that memory box I have pictures of me and Obama, a rose from my grandfather's grave, and cards from loved ones. Special things go in my memory box, not just anything. Other stuff I keep in random places... razz

I used to keep a lot of stuff like that, but over the years I've learned to just throw things away if they're not important. Like they say in the show Hoarders "The memory is what's important, and the memory doesn't live in the item." That said, I have one large plastic storage box in my closet with old stuff that I want to keep. Everything else I force myself to get rid of.

When I lived with my mom, I put all my random loved-for-some-reason things up on my wall. All of them--I had a fancy tire rim up there too, lol, that I found the day my (now ex) boyfriend moved into his house, plus my most beloved childhood toys, dried flowers, random notes and drawings from friends, etc. My walls were super-cluttered; if I wanted to walk down memory lane I could literally sit for hours and look at everything. But when I moved out I decided I definitely didn't want all this clutter everywhere, so I took pictures of a lot of it. The drawings and notes and stuffed animals and things that would take too much space to store, I took pictures of. So I still have the memories, just not the stuff. I kept the things that were useful or just too precious to give up, but most of it I threw away, gave away, recycled, or gave to my mom to store (because she always yells at me when I throw things away).

I've gotten better. I had a bunch of children's stuff my Mother gave me that I gave away to a friend (who is six). She loved the stuff and I was happy for her having it. Once our basement is done, I'm going to dump all the stuff out again and do another sweep.

I'm going to invest in a few scrap books too. I sometimes doodle and for the life of me I can't toss out sketches. Instead of having a bunch of pieces of paper fluttering around, I'll glue 'em to a page. School project stuff too.

I keep a random assortment of boxes that I put stuff in and then put in larger boxes.

I love going through stuff yearly. There's lots of times I forget that I have stuff or that I've got stuff sorted differently. I just love having everything out, seeing it all and then going from there.

Hoping for a good spring cleaning come this spring. :3
