I'm on the bandwagon with this one; goggles don't make you steampunk. But I do think building up on a Neo-Victorian (or Neo-Edwardian, or Napoleonic, Neo-...Antoinette? I'm so gonna try that) to give it that lovely anachronistic feel is what makes it. I mean, honestly; not everyone in the world of airships and clockworks needs them!
This is like the other question: "Does everything have to be brass and brown to be steampunk?"

Traitor Joesephina This is like the other question: "Does everything have to be brass and brown to be steampunk?" no i dont think so ... but being the most traditional colors from that time period one wouldnt want to stray too far away from that theme. As a period costume designer i just find the colors to be right on. Anything brighter would make it look strange... I wouldnt want brass or silver with hot pink and neon blue is a better example> a little extreme but still an example nontheless

DarkMusica I was discussing this subject with my friends in school... i know they dont know anything about steam punk, but they made a good fight anyway... i said : "I am poor and cant afford goggles... and im too lazy to make them ... so i dont REALLY need them to be steamy do i?" sweatdrop Not at all. As long as it's neo-victorian clothing. In a steampunk world, not everyone is going to be an airship engineer, clock maker, aether gun worker etc. Some people are just, you know, normal people.

I think I only really have goggles because they were the easiest thing I could (and knew how to) make.
I really like the period clothes much better~

Yes, you can be steampunk without goggles. I know some people might hate me for this, but I actually don't like goggles. I think they are uncomfortable and make your eyes look weird if you actually wear them.

Goggles don't define steampunk, it's just a very well known aspect of it, because of how steampunk is related to airship travel and adventure in general. A fictional aristocrat from the steampunk realm probably wouldn't wear goggles, for example, but what would set him/her apart from a regular Victorian/Edwardian gentleman/lady is the utilization of brass and accessories made of brass. I think. XD

So true. unfortunately, I have this lovely bustled skirt that isnt very steamy..seeing as its white and green >: I may be able to make it work.
Brass is so wonderful though! I just added a few brass snaps to a blue skirt I finished and it tied it all together ^^

'Course you don't! .........says she with two pairs rofl In fact, I think people don't need to be that rigid about what steampunk is, better to try to push the boundaries a bit, bring some originality to it, expand it. Otherwise the style gets stuck in a rut and doesn't grow and evolve.

You can be goth and not wear black You can be punk and have normal hair You can be emo and not have tight clothes
So you can be steampunk without goggles. As the Captain said on page 1- its about you, not what you wear

Otherwise the style gets stuck in a rut and doesn't grow and evolve. indeed. Steampunk really only became a fashion statement in the last...2 years maybe? Before that it was a genera of Literature, Movies and such. Its so new we arnt sure what it is yet, because its still evolving and creating its self. Its so new that aside from a few nooblets here and there it dosent even have a following of haters yet (I say "yet" because nomatter what you do, there will be a group of people who hate you eventually for whatever reason) We'r actually living and influencing the birth of a subculture. Lets enjoy the moment. We'r pioneers as it where, we'r laying the groundwork for later aditions to the genre. Sorry for ranting. But I guess my point is that We decide what steampunk is. There is no pre-set agenda for it yet. We have a general feel for what it is but its not set in stone. So steampunk is anything we want. its not often you get to be part of something like that
