It would seem that Anime Betty's assumption hits the mark. I believe it is mentioned in Pale Fallen Angels parts 1 & 2, when the baron tells D or Miska, I can't remember that his mother went under experiments, as well as he when he was just a baby. I believe that D's father, Count Dracula may have done similar experiments that also included attaching Lefty to his left hand. It's just a thought, but then again I could be wrong and D may have eaten a really bad piece of chicken. xD

I think it might be some curse or paraiste from a vampire he was fighting and he figured some way to use it to his advantage. Like when Benge has in that spell when hes trapped and his left hand sucks it away.Which i think is it source of energy but what do i know that's just my stoner theory.
