Sayuri had kept to herself, staying at home during the month of December, over Christmas and the New Year. Drifting snow had prevented her from travelling too far from the house - kimono's and geta's do not mix with snow. She had spent the days with Yamya, getting to know the feline toddler, when she wasnt piling wood into the brazier or playing on the shamisen - the plangent tones spilling out onto the white covered grounds when she had the occasion to open the shuttered doors that lead onto the garden. Now though the shamisen was put away, and she was watching Yamya play in the garden, jumping from drift to drift, pretend pouncing on small creatures that were running around in the little girl's imagination. Speaking of creatures; she sighed as she looked over the plans for her intended Koi pond. The earth moving had been proceeding as scheduled...and then the cold snap descended, the ground froze solid and the snow had blanketed the ground. Now she was left waiting for spring, a large sheet covered hole in her gardens the only hint that there might be a pond there one day. 'Cold mama,' Yamya complained, startingly Sayuri from her thoughts as the toddler clambered onto her lap. 'And you're wet,' she held the girl away from her as snow dripped from the girl's boots. 'Sno 'et,' Yamya purred, her jet black tail twitching. 'Yes it is,' Sayuri sat Yamya down in front of her, sliding each boot off her feet, and unzipping the faux-fur hooded coat. 'It's time for your nap now anyway,' Sayuri put the boots and coat away and Yamya hissed at that suggestion. 'No 'ap!' she yowled, and then yawned, little white pointy teeth and a pink tongue showing as her mouth opened wide. 'Oh yes, because you aren't tired,' Sayuri chuckled, picking the toddler up and swinging her through the air before cradling her against her chest. Yamya nestled against Sayuri, playing with the fine silken weaving of Sayuri's kimono, tracing the patterns with a finger. Her eyes grew droopy as the warmth from Sayuri's body made her drowsy, and when Sayuri entered Yamya's room, the toddler was virtually asleep. She lay the little girl into her bed, pulling the quilt over her and tucking it around Yamya. Yamya's ears twitched a little in sleep and her mouth sought out a thumb, sucking on it as she slumbered. Sayuri tiptoed from the room, sliding the paper door shut just enough so that Yamya could open it if she needed anything.

Sayuri watched as the contractor worked. The snow had begun to melt, and the steel-like earth had softened as the sun made itself noticed more and more as the winter months waned. Yamya was sleeping, wearing a child's kimono that Sayuri had gotten for her. She only liked to sleep in it though, as it was too cumbersome for the toddler to move swiftly around in. Sayuri sipped her fragrant tea, moving to another shuttered window, closing it and then leaving the front room, going outside. She watched a while, the steam from her tea moving up into the air like a little elemental wisp. The measured hole had been dug, and now it was lined, paving slabs being laid around the edge, stones and then even a place for plants. The waterfall had yet to be built, and the large pond would need to be checked for waterproofing before being filled, or even one fish was put into it. She glided off back into the house, the contractor would be leaving for the day soon as the evening was drawing in, and she would need to make Yamya's and her dinner.

Journal Entry;
The summer is now upon us, the days slowly passing by in what seems like a long haze. At night I've started to hear crickets, their chirping music sounding out above the gentle flow of the pond's waterfall.
Yes it was finally finished; sometime near the end of April it was, and the fish were installed a few weeks later. Yamya loves the pond, she can watch the fish gently swimming for what seems like hours. She does get a little intense sometimes, and it requires a little word, or a gentle finger tap to bring her from her reverie. I made sure to tell her, in very stern words, that if a fish went missing and I believed it was her, that all of her favourite toys and activities would be taken away from her! She sulked at that but understood. I cannot have her being a wanton predator, despite the nature of her soul being what it is. There were cats at the okiya when I was a little girl; I remember them killing songbirds as well as the vermin they were brought for.
I am wondering now when Yamya will grow. It seems a very long time since she appeared from the leaf, and she doesnt seem to have grown in stature at all. She has grown in knowledge however, and has even allowed me to teach her to read and write a little. She talks a little better, mainly thanks to meeting Dylan, another Eden child. I need to get her to socialise a little better, and have her meet other children, but I like my privacy and so find entering into the towns a little trying. I am sure she will grow when she is ready however.
