About a month ago, a girl in the town next to me was hit by a truck. She was unconscious for a very long time and finally came back to consciousness in ICU to find herself with internal bleeding and several severe broken bones. People that hear that story get angry and say, "Well, whoever hit that girl should hate himself." Not entirely. See, I know the guy that hit the girl and know several people who saw it all.
It was on a Wednesday night and she was at church. Her church bought a big, vacant building across the four-lane from her church, and several church members were in that building helping out. Her friends and she decided they wanted to go over and see how everything was going. The girl (we're going to call her by Ashley now) suggested to just drive over there because she was wearing heels and didn't want to dodge cars. Her friends suggested otherwise, saying it'd be okay as long as they were careful.
Well, a guy that's in one of my classes (Evan) was driving to the gas station that was next to Ashley's church. He got in the passing lane and was waiting for the cars to go by. The girls and Ashley were not far off, also waiting for the cars to go by. Finally, when it was clear, the girls practically darted out in front of Evan. He waited for them to pass, looked both ways, and went to turn into the gas station.
Apparently Ashley was the last one to cross the road. While Evan was turning, Ashley darted out to cross the road. That's when everything happened. She was thrown out of her heels onto the road several, several feet away from Evan's truck and knocked unconscious instantly. Evan panicked, got out of the truck, and went to check and see if she was all right. He noticed she wasn't responding and thought he killed her, so he broke out into a run to the gas station to find a telephone (yeah, he didn't have his cell phone when he needed it most). Two cars pulled over first: one some random guy and another a woman substitute teacher from our school. The guy was screaming, "There he goes! He's running away from the crime scene!" The woman, knowing Evan is a really great guy, screamed back, "No, you moron! He's going to get help!"
Everyone, even today, is debating whose fault it is. I don't know the girl personally, and I know Evan really well, but I still think it was a little of both. I think Evan and Ashley know it's like that, too. Evan goes to see her a lot in ICU. The next day of the accident, he went up to the hospital with flowers and candy for her. He says she's not the least bit mad at him, and she honestly shouldn't be. But what do you guys think?
