my turn off to Abney is they used to be goth. I'm not downing goths but I'd prefer to listen to a band who started steam and stays steam.

That's a little single minded, I mean, fair enough but good bands evolve, they change and try new things, test the waters. Abney Park may have started off as Goth but then again so did alot of similar bands. Steampunk in the music industry is still being defined, I'm not sure that it ever will be because "Steampunk" itself covers a lot of little sub-genres.

You cant just expect a band to do the same thing forever, after a while it'll all just become the same thing.

Im not a huge fan of Abney Park but there are a few songs they have made that I adore, Dear Ophellia is one of them.

I'm not being single minded. I'm just saying that I'd PREFER to listen to a band who doesn't jump from style to style. I do listen to bands who've changed their style, like Malice Mizer. MM changed their style more times than the amount of airships the most infamous airkraken has taken down.

I do admire that Captain Robert has his email publicly posted. As far as I've seen other music artists rarely if ever do that. I did speak with him via email some and he is a pretty cool guy.

As for them starting as a goth band, way I gather it, they started as a goth band but felt that really wasn't a good fit for them, then they found steampunk, tried it, and have stuck with it ever since.

They even wrote up an entire mythos for their characters and even named a ship. That's some pretty good dedication to a style in my book.

They're still a goth band. Just because they dress up and sing about airships, There genre is still Gypsy Goth. And while it's neat that they wrote a story, that still does not make Steampunk a Genre, nor will it ever be.

+1.

I really didn't like 'em that much, TBH. They're a bit...dull.
