We're doing Thanksgiving at my aunt's house. stare

The bright side of my week will be Your Welcome's Day! My family is Cherokee, Blackfoot, and Chickasaw. We're doing a pot luck at my sister's friends house.

I thought native tribes had a VERY negative attitude towards the whole thanksgiving thing.

Hey, I wasn't trying to one-up anybody. I think all of your Thanksgiving feasts sound good, too.

Re: cooked cranberry sauce: I like cranberry relish because it has bright, strong flavors AND because of the vitamin C issue. Mine doesn't go into a meat grinder, either. It goes into a food processor. The fruit isn't macerated and bruised from smashing, but rather, precision-cut by whirring deathblades! Rar!

Of course, Divash mucst come in and 1-up us all with her delicious sounding menu......

I forgot to include my appetizers and desserts... And I wouldn't say it's a 1-up, but it's definitely more health conscious. I just happen to be a black sheep in a family of picky eaters who likes to experiment with food. I still have to convince my mother that letting the turkey soak in brine for a day will make a better turkey, or my father that a deep fried turkey is a great thing indeed, or my sister that processed food isn't bad for you or my brother that things that are green are not actually going to kill him. Yeah 34 years old, still won't eat his greens.

However, being saddled with them all, I am forced to keep it simple.

However wait until February when I start posting my dinner party menu.
Oh last year my mom and I made a turkey that was brined, it was really good!

Brined turkeys are AWESOME. I just don't have a big enough sink to wash out a bucket that's big enough to submerse an entire turkey.

What I do instead is roast the turkey breast-down for the first half of cooking. Roasting it breast-up, the juices flow from the breast into the open empty cavity of the bird, and out into the roasting pan. It's great for making a very fine gravy indeed, but it dries out the breast horribly. Roasting the bird breast-down for the first half of cooking, though, makes the juices flow 'up' into the breast meat, keeping the meat from getting dried out and tough. You do need to add some broth to the bottom of the roaster, though, if you've got vegetables in there that you want to cook and soften.

Another thing that makes turkey dry is stuffing. Putting stuffing into a bird's cavity makes the stuffing soak up all the juices, leaving the meat dry. If you make dressing (stuffing, but you don't put it into the bird's cavity, you bake it in a baking dish instead), your bird will stay beautifully moist and rich.

Divash can cook. I stay away from the oven. I'm afraid I'll catch it on fire.

It's a distinct possibility depending on what kinda oven you're working with.

So long as you use an over built in the later half of the 20th century or later and know the difference between the cook function and the clean function, you should be all good.

Anybody can cook. You just have to know where to start.

Also look up Alton Brown & Good Eats on You Tube.

I mean we've all had our EPIC FAILS when cooking.

I'm only an 1/8 or less of each and solely on my dad's side. My mom's side is who we spend the holidays with, and they're anglo to the core. My grandmother claims her family came over on the Mayflower.

Anyway, I'll make all kinds of cookies and stuff for You're Welcome's Day but let my female relatives do all the work for Thanksgiving because they get mean in the kitchen.

I'm going to one of my uncle's/aunt's house.
I've heard that the family is a bit rocky now and I don't really want to go.

I feel ya man, but my family is just annoying. Such is life, though.
They'll want to know all about my recent break up, where I want to go to school, who they want to set me up with, how much weight I've lost, what my sister's boyfriend is like, how many friends I've got, whether I ever plan on getting a job. They aren't even Jewish! It's so exhausting.

Remember, when serving a new item on turkey day.

Have your guests sign a waiver.

I've had our legal team make one up for us.
