once again, people are misunderstanding what i'm saying. there is no "white" or "black" or "latin" or "asian" culture that everone of those races fits in, because those races are made up of MANY different cultures. yes, we can have a scots club or a latino club or a black union or whatever to celebrate our heritage, but in mainstream society - especially american society - there is no need to talk about "african-americans" and "latin-americans" and "asian-americans." we are all HUMAN, we are all AMERICANS, that is where it ENDS. or at least, that's where it should end.

I understand you Mike, this is what we were talking about the other day.

As much as I hate saying *whatever*Americans, I wish that each group would pick a single word and stick too it. It went from Hispanics to Latinos then from African Americans to Blacks.

I get so confused, I don't ever know which word is acceptable for me, as a white person, to say. If it's wrong for one group, it should be wrong for all groups. I'm so afraid of offending someone all the time, it's ridiculous. Then I get called a cracker, and that 's funny.

confused
I can tell you, I'm not laughing.
um... i laugh when i get called cracker. i also laugh when i get called ***** (which has happened, believe it or not).

What about honkey?
that also makes me laugh. i think of "hankey" every time i hear it.

whitebread makes me laugh too. actually, it'd be pretty hard to call me a name that would offend me. not impossible, but damned hard

I find it funny how they say "equal opportunity", yet they still ask for race/gender on the forms. If it doesn't have any effect on getting accepted/hired/whatever, then why did they even ask for it? confused

scream I know! People should get scholarships if they DESERVE IT or NEED IT! Not because once upon a time there were prejusides about their race.

stressed

I just want equality for everyone. I don't want to see someone turned away from financial aide that they really need because of their skin color. It shouldn't matter. We are AMERICANS. That's all that matters. That's all that should matter.

Again, you have to define these things somehow. My definitions:

Race: Indelible physical characteristics such as hair and skin color, build, and bone structure unique to groups of people. The result of evolutionary adaptation to respective environments, such as Africans having black skin as a result of higher melanin levels.

Ethnicity: Unique cultural identities and in some cases certain physical characteristics endemic to a group of people usually, but not in all cases, residing in a certain area. For instance, there are a lot of different subdivisions of white people.

Nationality: The nation or country you belong to, either by official citizenship or residence. You can be an Algierian immigrant and call yourself a Frenchman if you're a citizen of that country.

Claiming superiority or inferiority based on any of these is wrong. Celebrating, as Warrior said, is perfectly fine, as that's what makes culture. But as Mega said, we're all ultimately of the species homo sapiens.

Amen to that! Screw double standard. If people want equality act like it...
People need to remember there are two sides to this equality thing the good and the bad. You can not except one and not the other.

what does britain giving birth to america have to do with the fact that i was talking about america and not britain, so celtic obviously wasnt meant to be included in the statement that we all (americans) are american as opposed to african-american or asian-american or etc?
