It's really easy to say "pathetic" to that. Then let's say you blew 6,000 dollars on your character and spent 2 years lvling him. And some asshat hacks you and everything is gone in a moment. How would that make you feel?
The truth is, stealing $50 from someone's gym locker can get you arrested. How is that a lesser offense than destroying a valuable Maple or Gaia account?
I was friends with some guy for 13 years, he decided not to be friends with me anymore, and since I trusted him with my mesos, he decided not to return them, citing that it was "play money." 500 bucks down the toilet, and I had to replace all that "play money" with another 500 bucks. It's seriously not as funny as it sounds. I was basically robbed.

I think it's pathetic the fact that the guy in the article trusted someone else with his ID and password.
And yes, these things can get you arrested... in Japan at least.
