Growth Quest 01 - Balamb and his Secret Powers Part 1
"No~!" He screamed. He did not want to walk down into the city. He did not want to see or be seen and he certainly did not want to be poked or proded by a dirty old man in a scary white coat. Besides, he looked scary the last time he went, oversized glasses and all.
"Doctor Hazard is a nice gentleman. He gave you that nice green apple lolipop when you went last time." Bridget soothed.
"Nope. Nu-huh." Balamb had been clinging to Rhiannon like he would die if he were separated. Good thing it was the weekend.
"We'll all go. How's that? We'll go do something special at home after. Rent a movie and eat popcorn?" That perked him up.
"Wif, pea-nuts butter?" She nodded vigorously. Anything, anything to get him to go to the doctor's office. After some searching around the still new parent had found a dedicated medical office that catered to... the strange creatures of Gaia and beyond. The four of them bundled up in the cold. It was a drafty begining to February, a heartily cold way leading to Valentines.
The first block was fine, the second... was alright. Balamb tottled in his sneakers, keeping a close eye on everyone that he passed. The motor skills of walking down pat and his mind could wander elsewhere, as he clung to Bridget in one hand and Rhiannon in the other. Oh, how he longed for the greener times, at least he was sure it would come! He'd seen it on Sesame Street. 'Summer', or 'Spring'! Plants and butterflies.
He babbled to Rhiannon about his thoughts as they crunch-crunch-crunched through the snow. There was a lot of people walking down the streets. All searching for their own 'honey's special gift early. There were so many sales! Most of them lost upon the little newt-boy. Eventually he relaxed enough to slip out of Bridget's hand as she led the group, and not long after, Rhiannon's. Positively swinging his arms and looking forward to the magically popped snack that he loved with melted gooey peanut butter his gaze fell upon an empty and forlorn lot.
It looked so diseased, lost and shanty. The only green growing were prickler-plants and spindly vines of angry red thorns among the discarded rusted iron. He wiggled his toes and thought for a moment. Something that he had been doing a lot more often as he made his way upon the world. It wasn't fair that they had to wait. The crunching sound of the other three started to fade away from his hearing, seemingly not waiting for him! He wanted green now.

Growth Quest 01 - Balamb and his Secret Powers Part 2
Balamb sighed once more. Green now. Even if it was just a little bit. He kipped over towards the snow dusted lot. It was big enough to be a small area for a relaxing, a veritable place of verdant splendor. However it was uncared for, as if the very ground was polluted. There were heaps of old trash that was ignored and piled off to the side. The newt child wanted new growth to start.
Without quite realizing it he had closed his eyes and yet still looked upon that direlect lot and slowly imagined it becoming green with a large oak tree in the center. He opened his eyes and sighed for the third time.
"Balamb, whatcha looking at?" his guardian questioned.
"Want no more snow," He replied simply. His guardian chuckled softly. At least that was what he was worrying all about now instead of the visit.
"Tell ya what, Bal, I'll get you something that we can start together so that spring will come sooner."
Come sooner? What power could urge away winter? A grin lit up his tired face and he held hands with Rhia and Bridget. As they left the slightly overcast day brightened. A lone shaft of light swathed the lot, bringing life into sharp relief. Nay - revealing the life that had miraculously sprung from a dormant acorn buried so deeply that it shouldn't have been ready to become a sapling.
The little acorn was rudely awakened from the silent tiny calling, urging to growth. Grow it did. From the moment that the trio had left. And continued to grow into a sprighty and healthy sapling.
Soon enough Balamb was sitting on the reclining chair and the good doctor Hazard looking quite expectantly at the child. Balamb was gripping Bee with a sticky grip and a rising smell filling the room.
"And you're sure that this isn't a sickness?" the guardian was asking. The doctor smiled serenely.
"I think you might want to look up information on the great crested newt. So far he's been a wonderfully healthy child with all the abilities of that creature."
"It's just that Balamb's just been doing that more often now," she trailed off uncertainly. What Balamb had been doing was seemingly to produce more of the white sticky and acrid smelling fluid that seemed to spring to his pores, mostly where his sweat glands would be.
During the conversation that his guardian and doctor were having he looked at the planter in the window, since Balamb was still trying to distance himself from the current events. It was sprouted but there were no flowers yet. He was saddened. He wanted that spring to come. He thought about the plant showing its pretty little face and slowly before his eyes one of the stalks swelled with a bud. The adults still within their informative chat, didn't notice the growth until Balamb started to giggle happily.
"Oh well would you look at that, I didn't realize you got your flower to bloom already." Bridget noted, "Balamb seems to like green things as of late." However the good doctor could only gaze open mouthed at the planter.
"My make plant show 'is face." Bridget looked from doctor to Balamb and then to the plant. Balamb looked guilty all of a sudden. Embarassed really, but since he took his mind off the plant and its controlled growth it suddenly swelled and multiplied.
"Gah!" The doctor exclaimed.
"Balamb what are you doing?" Bee asked shrilly. The plant swelled to ten times its normal size, takikng on a jungle like appreance. Tendrils spread out and within minutes the plant had seeded again and started to take over most of the wall shedding lambent green-filtered light. Bridget couldn't even bring her warding magic into the forefront. She didn't bind any vestiges, and she was utterly powerless to the growing monster before her eyes.
"No! I say stop!" Balamb cried out. The plant kept on growing but it had slowed. "Stop!" the child said again, this time the plant visibly shuddered. Balamb screwed his eyes shut and thought that the plant would go back to being small again.
It didn't work that way. However the quivering plant had finally stopped its maddening growth. The back wall was completely covered as if there was no wall and that the plant was intruding from the outside, its grip tenatiously upon the celing, floor and ajoining two walls.
Balamb was exausted when he opened his eyes again. He wailed, filled with distraught embarassment. He wanted green now but he didn't think he could really get plants to grow! It seemed to have some type of base intelligence as it rustled uneasily.
"Uhm. Well. We'll be leaving now," Bridget thanked the doctor. She looked back towards the door, but it was open and the professional no where in sight. "Yeah we'll be leaving now Balamb." He sniveled.
"You stopped it. I wish I could have done that but I just wasn't er ready for that." She continued in the one-sided conversastion.
Somewhat disturbed they rushed by the empty lot going home. However it was no longer empty. The little treeling was still there and already fallen dormant to prepare for a true spring green mantle to wear later on. A second attestment to the springing powers that had laid dormant within the Hiccup.
That night, once Balamb was calmed down somewhat, Bridget kept her promise. She also had gathered some of her gardening supplies while the child was busy with Rhiannon and securely locked them away for fear of what would happen later on.
